Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio was developed in the late eighties. Elders and community, seeing the fast growth of media technology, decided to create a local radio station to service the needs of local people. They saw that we needed a way for us to pass on culture, maintain language, share stories, news and music that we like in the Fitzroy Valley. Community came together at Karrayilli Adult Education Centre and travelled all over Australia to lobby for a radio station. And in the late 80s, Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio was born.

In the beginning, Wangki Radio was a segment on ABC Kimberley. They switched over to old man NP for a few hours and then switched back again. It wasn’t until later on that Wangki Radio obtained its own AM licence and began broadcasting full time on 936am.

Twenty five years later, Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio broadcasts to over 40 communities from at least six language groups: Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Walmajarri, Nyikina Mangala, English and Kriol. It has a 400km wide listening diameter, stretching all the way from the Erskine Ranges to Halls Creek, up along the Gibb River Road and into the Peninsular and south to Bililuna, sometimes as far as Balgo or Lombadina. Over  5,000 listeners tune into Wangki Radio every day.

We run on up to six employees and also volunteers from our local communities. We bring you the best of local and Kimberley music, classic country and rock as well as what’s hot in the music scene. Tune in for news, entertainment, information, emergency services, culture, language and connection to your Fitzroy Valley mob!

THAT Family Show

This show looks at legal issues that impact on the people of the Fitzroy Valley and how they can become more involved in creating change in their communities. This includes environmental law, laws and policies impacting on schools It also looks at services people may want to engage with. Law & Order

Schools and community groups in a few communities in the Kimberley recently had a visit from the crew at Yoga Zeit. Yoga Zeit is working in remote indigenous communities to train the communities in mindfulness and yoga movement not only as a way of staying fit but as a way of managing stress, of staying focused and of focusing excess energy into a positive space that can do good. 

Jarrod Minniecon from the Nindilingarri Spiritual Health Program had a visit from Sharnell Avery and Claire South from Yoga Zeit and he started by asking them where the name Yoga Zeit came from.

Fitzroy Crossing Blue Tree

The Martuwarra, or Fitzroy River, in Western Australia’s remote Kimberley, is regarded by local traditional owners as the sacred river of life.

The First Laws of the Martuwarra are shared by Martuwarra Nations through a common songline, which sets out community and individual rights and duties.

First Law recognizes the river as the Rainbow Serpent: a living ancestral being from source to sea.

In November 2016, an alliance of Traditional Owners expressed a collective vision for the Martuwarra in the ‘Fitzroy River Declaration’.

It marked the first time in Australia when both First Law and the rights of nature were explicitly recognized in a negotiated instrument.

Two years later they formed the Martuwarra Council to protect the spiritual, cultural and environmental health of the river catchment.

These environmental and cultural values are recognised through National Heritage Listing and as a Western Australian Aboriginal Heritage Site.

But now this mighty river system and surrounding intact tropical savanna, is under threat from development.

Pastoralists have been circling the region for decades and now want to extract billions of litters of water to expand their cattle empires in Australia’s North.

These include Australia’s richest woman, Gina Rhinehart who owns two cattle stations in the catchment, Liveringa and Fossil Downs. Another known as Gogo is owned by the prominent Harris family, who run beef and cotton stations in the NSW Murray Darling basin.

The WA government will soon decide on water allocations in the catchment after extensive deliberations with traditional owners, pastoralists, environment groups and the broader community.

State Water Minister Dave Kelly has vowed to protect the river system and not make the mistakes of the Murray-Darling, while allowing ‘appropriate development’.

As the local community awaits a final decision, we hear from the various stakeholders in this special hour-long radio documentary.

We’ve been talking a lot about the Martuwarra as the West Australian government prepares to decide on water allocations in the Fitzroy Valley catchment.

Several cattle stations in the region, including Gogo, Liveringa and Fossil Downs, want to take billions more litres of water from the Margaret and Martuwarra and its tributaries for cropping.

Recently, we heard from Phil Hams, the Development Manager at Gogo Station, just outside Fitzroy Crossing.

We ventured out with Gooliyandi Rangers who are still celebrating the creation of the new Warlibirri National Park, which takes in areas of the Margaret River on Gooniyandi country.

Environmental factors play such a crucial role in the health of our society. From mould or dust in our houses to the diseases our pets, native animals, or pests might carry, the condition of our living environments often relates directly to our health and wellbeing.  

One Aboriginal Organisation doing great work in educating Kimberley communities about environmental health issues and promoting sustainable environmental health practices is Nirrumbuk Aboriginal Corporation, based in Broome.

During the height of the pandemic, Nirrumbuk sent team members throughout the Kimberley, including Fitzroy Crossing, Derby, Halls Creek and Kununurra, to help prevent the spread of COVID.

Team members worked closely with the Nindilingarri Cultural Health Service mob here in Fitzroy to conduct wastewater surveillance, PCR and RAT testing, and the education campaign.

Kimberley Region Leads The Way On Environmental Health Programs

Nineteen-year-old teenager Sam Hughes from Maleny in Queensland is on a long slow drive around Australia on a tractor raising money for charity.

The Travelling Jackeroo, as he’s known, has racked up over 8-thousand kilometres since heading off from Maleny early last year.

This week he reached Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley on his way to Broome and then down the WA coast to Perth.

It was quite a sight for locals, towing a trailer packed with a donation tin, fairy floss machine, jumping castle, cinema screen, Suzuki Sierra, and a wingless Beechcraft Musketeer.

The Travelling Jackaroo has been a big drawcard for kids and adults alike as, and he has over 100-thousand people following him on social media.

Western Australia Labor Senator Patrick Dobson has been appointed Special Envoy for Reconciliation and the implementation of the Uluru Statement in the new Federal Labor Government.

 

Senator Dodson is considered the grandfather of Reconciliation with decades of experience in Aboriginal Affairs, but his new role will be no small task.
