On this feature of Round the Bend Now & Then, Matt Emery, our local Michiana historian takes us back to a time when Park Jefferson was anything but an apartment complex.

The sprawling property once boasted an appliance king who decided to turn his knack for all appliance to all that is putting! It was once a large golf course!

It was an inexpensive way the whole family could play golf before it was ever a place where hundreds of families now call it home.

Matt Emery is back to share a great Michiana tale where one resident had a plan to MOVE the St. Joe River, yes. MOVE the St. Joe River to help establish a vibrant downtown! Did the plan come to fruition? No, but it showed others to dream big and think outside the box...or outside the river!

Matt Emery is back with a new tale from Michiana all about the intersection of Michigan and Wayne in South Bend, IN!

At that intersection there was a massive brawl between the KKK and Notre Dame Students, John Dillinger robbed his last bank, and how one of South Bend's most disgraceful citizens burned down an entire building!

We learn so much as he comes in and you can hear more stories like this in his podcast and on socials!

Round The Bend Now & Then: Bendix Mansion

Local Michiana historian, Matt Emery, gives incredible insight to the places we walk by, drive by, and see every day!

This week he shares all about the gorgeous Beiger Mansion in Mishawaka!

While Beiger is a common name you might hear in Michiana, Martin was known for the Mishawaka Woolen and Rubber Manufacturing Company, which became the Ball Band Rubber Company.

With his mass fortune, he built a stunning mansion, but unfortunately died before it was even completed!

The history will tell that when Susie Beiger died, she made sure the mansion was a place where elderly women had a place to call home, where all of their needs were met with security and dignity.

The following years would lead to a sale of the mansion, and even a fire that nearly destroyed this local treasure.

We appreciate all that Matt does to preserve and share in the history of this wonderful place we call home!

Matt Emery is in studio to share all about the history of the incredible local gem: Potawatomi Zoo!!

While the Zoo is an incredible place for our community today, it was a much different place decades ago.

The zoo accepted animal donations, and in fact reached out to residents to help in their hunt for new raccoons! Unfortunately with free access to the animals in their enclosures, it wasn't always the safest place for the animals when people would give monkeys cigarettes and food!

Matt had the chance to share the history of the zoo with the current Executive Director, Josh Sisk, on the latest episode of his podcast!

"Honestly, just seeing the change in the kids. From that time when they come into your house and they're just scared, they're closed off, they don't know what's going on. And then at a certain point you get to see their genuine smile, and then they're just happy. Whatever else is going on in your day, everything is good at that point."

Lea's heart for fostering began when she was just in elementary school knowing that she wanted to make a difference in the life of a child. Knowing she was called to help children, she became a teacher in Mishawaka, and it was a student of her very own that introduced Lea to becoming a foster mom!

Through SAFY, her questions were answered, and she jumped right in to the licensing process.

"I do think I have moments, you know when they're in your house, and the big moments for me is when you get to see them be a kid. Where they let their walls down, that's when I have those moments,  of like, "Ok, wow this is impacting them positively."

While the future is uncertain with every case, Lea is certain that this process has taught her invaluable life lessons.

"I will forever cherish it,  it's taught me so much about myself. It's helped me grow as a person, as an individual, and I just know that I will never regret having done it." .

Thank you so much to Morning View Assisted Living for their generous contribution of $500 to say thank you to Lexi for investing in the future of our community through her journey of fostering!

Lea's Christmas Wish With Morning View Assisted Living!

Lexi is a true joy to anyone who has the opportunity to meet her!

Her love for children is evident in the way she shares her home with an in-home daycare, as well as the foster children who she supports in every way.

SAFY of Indiana has walked with Lexi from the beginning, and she says, "SAFY has taught us so much compassion and flexibility and how easy it is to love beyond biology. Our home is so much fuller, not just with noise and toys, but with meaning."

Thank you to Zolman's Best One Tire & Auto Care for providing $750 in auto care so that Lexi can upkeep her transit van for the children in her daycare, but for also taking care of the future foster children she excitedly anticipates!

Lexi's Christmas Wish With Zolman's Best One Tire!

Mary began her fostering journey through SAFY, and is so grateful for their continued support as they now have four precious girls in their home, two of which have been adopted!

With medically fragile children, Mary & her family know this is an opportunity for love and hope to shine through the lives of each of their daughters each day.

When she envisions Christmas morning, she envisions the magic that will happen that morning.

"It's us together, and I can't believe we have four precious little ones in our home. When I look at them, even if they don't look like me, they all represent actually four mothers out there. They are of me, and I am of them, and we are intricately connected. I can't picture my life apart from foster care, because of the ones who have come into our homes through foster care."

Thank you to Athora Law for giving back to the givers this Christmas season and blessing amazing foster families like Mary's!

If you are interested in becoming a foster family and making an investment that can change a life, please reach out to SAFY of Indiana!

Mary's Christmas Wish With Athora Law!

Mom and daughter duo, Linda & Tina have been fostering through SAFY for decades, knowing that fostering is a long term investment into our community.

Tina says, "These kids need you. You're going to need these kids one day, because as they grow older they're going to take care of us. So I want to show them, 'Hey, I'm going to take care of you now, but this is how you take care of your kids. And then your parents, and the older people in the community'. I'm just trying to help one kid at a time."

Thank you to Andy's Furniture for the gift of a queen sized mattress for Linda and her family!!

For Tina and her family, The Party Trailer is going to be rolling up this party on wheels for an epic afternoon of FUN for such an incredible family!!

In the journey of fostering, Linda says, "Just give it a try. There's a lot of good foster parents."

Linda & Tina's Wish With The Party Trailer & Andy's Furniture!

"It really does make us feel good to know that even if we're not those biological mom and dad, we are that mom and dad that are there now and able to make sure that his future is gonna be what it needs to be for him."

When Presli & her husband adopted Alex, which just happened to be National Donut Day (His FAVORITE!), it was a joyous day for their family.

"Yes, we know that we're making in impact, but we are doing it because we love coming from a big family. We love having all those people around and that support. We know that we're making an impact, but I think we really do it because we have a lot of love to give, and it was just a really good way for us to be able to do that."

If you're ready to make an impact on the life of a child and family here in Michiana, please reach out to SAFY today!

Presli & Alex's Christmas Wish!

While Allison and her husband are unable to have biological children, they knew they wanted to grow their family.

"Somehow, some way I found my way to SAFY, and we never looked back."

Their first placement was a child who had been in multiple foster homes in just six years. Today, Allison is happy to share that they are in the process of adopting him!!

What is one word that describes her family?

"Miracle. An absolute miracle, and he made that happen."

If you are interested in making a difference in the life of a child, please reach out to SAFY and find out how you can discover your own miracle!!

Through their Empowering Families program, SAFY helps foster families build safe, sustainable homes where every child can thrive. Their mission is simple but powerful: to preserve families, restore hope, and strengthen the bonds that make our community stronger.
