From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.
This is the World Game with Stephan mork thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together.
Welcome to another edition.
It's a massive night and there's lots to talk about this evening on the World Game.
And you're going to see you up to.
Six thousand dollars bonus on a Motor E five and a MODA five at Southern Cherry morpht Vale. I'm Sam Tugwell with me, of course, is the star of the show, the very man Stephan Moore.
Great, have you made yep?
Very happy to be here. Back to winning ways, which is important, isn't it?
Certainly is.
We've got a lot to talk about Asian champs. We'll talk about the Premier League. We've got the Young Soccer Russe.
We've got a special guest, Ethan Allegance is going to talk to us.
We've got Reds tickets to give away and your calls eight double two to three double o double.
Oh but let's talk about your Reds.
Great win Friday night and neget to play on Saturday night against the Jets. We'll talk about that game shortly, but Friday night feels like a long time ago.
But that was an excellent result.
Yeah, it was I think we we obviously had to bounce back. We had the disappointing result in Sydney, and to be honest, I don't think we played that well.
On Fronday.
Melbourne City came out, they were pressing us really high, they played really well. The wind in the first hid played a massive factor and obviously their dominance I would say for the first forty five minutes, but they were just really well organized. And I don't know if it was a lack of confidence or just one of those days, but yeah, we didn't play well, but most importantly we won the game one nil. We went in that halftime nil nil, and that was the message, you know what, we've been horrible. The positive is we've got forty five minutes and it's still nil nil, and we went out second half, scored a really nice goal off a set piece Artie Goodwin, and then we're able to hold on for a clean sheet, something that we'd struggle to do this season. So realistically, you know, not our best performance, but I think in the grand scheme of things in the season, for a champion team, you need to have those games where you underperform but still win.
That is absolutely spot on.
I think there's been a lot of those sorts of games at the season where you probably admit as a team haven't.
Played your best, but you're getting those results.
And this is happening time and time again, which is a great thing when you think you've got all the wins on the board and still not playing your best consistently.
Yeah, no, exactly right, and there's eleven games to go. It's incredible how quick the season's going by. And you know, we've put a bit of a gap now on the rest of the teams below us, So US in Auckland. You know, I don't want to jinx US or anything like that, but i'd say US in Auckland are the two teams at the moment anyway that are really going for it.
Thirty three points Auckland, thirty one US.
Then there's five points to Western United below US, and we've actually got a game in.
Hand on them, so five points plus a game in hand.
And then the two teams below that, Sydney f C maccarthur on twenty five points, so a.
Six point gap exactly.
So you've got to win those games, but we're six points clear. You win those two, you go twelve points, so like that's a big, big gap.
With eleven to go.
They've only got nine to go, so I think it's it's going to be exciting, a good finish to the season, and we just need to make sure we keep winning, we keep improving, playing well. We've got Newcastle which we will touch on afterwards, and then Western United away which is a tough game, and then Auckland away, so those two can really set up the season. And going to Auckland, they've been getting massive crowds in a couple of weeks. Time's that's set up for a massive match.
All right, Well, I'll let you introduce our next Gus, who was a good teammate of yours and has been a great contributor this summer.
Yes, extremely good for him.
He's I think he's obviously got a famous name, as everybody knows and everybody likes to repeat, but I like to just focus on Ethan.
I think his respectfully.
Yeah, he's you know, his dad's obviously a great guy, Richie.
I've spoken to him and been away with him.
He is actually in Japan with the Football Essay boys and he's a top guy. But Ethan's coming through he's you know, he's been involved with us for three four seasons now.
He has worked really hard.
Last year when I came in, actually hadn't played a lot, and I was surprised because you know, when I left he was one of the good young players coming through. For some reason, he wasn't playing. That's the way football works. He kind of was biting his time. He came in, not saying it was coincidental when I came, but he started playing for the rest of the season, did really well, and then came into preseason and I think he's been our best performer in pre seeds. He's inconsistently he's taking that into the season and he's been unbelievable for us. Finally getting some goals as well, because there was a bit of a joke with him and Cole actually every time he kicked it over the barrier to pay one hundred dollars.
Every time he scored, he got one hundred backs.
So you know, it's actually just a really important part for him to add to his game, and he's done that, and I think he's got a massive future, probably not at Adelaide United, because.
He's good enough to go overseas well.
He's forging his own path, no question about Ethan. Alligance joins us here on the world game. Ethan, thanks for your time.
No, you're welcome.
Thank you for having me.
It's a lot of a rap.
That was very kind.
It was a good pump up, wasn't it. I'm normally, I'm normally. I'm not normally that nice.
Definitely not at training, and probably what I say to you training I can't repeat here.
How nice? He's not that nice? Ethan? Is this real?
He's pretending in front of the in front.
Of the microphone.
It's all about that, isn't it? Fake it until you make it? I think so. Thank you for jumping on. I'm sure you're you're busy, But I guess how would you assess it?
Obviously, you know over the last let's say twelve months, Like I said, you know, when I first came back last season, you were struggling.
I think you just had COVID and then you got chucked into the team. What you know, what was it?
I guess you know that when you broke into the team last season that I guess gave you the confidence then to be a starting player. And then what did you take into the off season to come into preseason and do so well.
That's actually tough question. But I just think, you know, at the time when I wasn't playing, I was probably like you know, when you overthink, overthink too much, or you worry too much about your performances, or you think you're not doing enough. But I think just keep it simple and be calm. I think was the biggest one. When you're on the ball, because you know where we play, you can't really panic when you have the ball, and I think that's the biggest thing. It's just I've got a bit more maybe I don't know, composure than I had previously, and I think that's made a big difference.
Yeah, yeah, definitely. And your preseason was was really strong.
I think you played in almost every game, one of the fittest players. Did you do a lot of work away in the off season to kind of put yourself in that position or you're just putting it down two good genetics.
You've seen me, right. I wouldn't say it's exactly genetics, but no, I think the difference between my last two off seasons was this one. I didn't actually do as much like gym work and stuff like that. And maybe not as much running. So I was probably a bit fresher coming into the season, whereas the one before I didn't really give myself arrest at all and just came when it last season all guns blazing, and then I came into the pre season. I think I was dead by the time the season started.
Yeah, I guess that's sometimes it is.
You know, when you're a young player, you're working your way through, you're kind of figuring it out, and working hard is always a good mentality, and you know that mentality I think is actually put you in this current position. So you don't want to say don't work hard, but it's probably understanding your body and being able.
To work smarter.
And the more preseasons you get under your belt, the fitter you're going to be in the more seasons, the more games you play, and that's one thing that we lack here in Australia is good competitive games. You play in the NPL for a couple of seasons, which was amazing, but it's a big jump from NPL to a league. So this season now you've been flying. As I said, I won't I won't repeat that at training tomorrow, but you have been flying what is what is I guess the key area. I know you said composure on the ball, but what are some key things that you think you know you wanted to add into your game and want to keep adding into your game to improving as a player.
I think for me it's just you know, being aggressive, and I guess it comes down to what I said before, But you know, wanting the ball, because there was times maybe previously where I wouldn't want the ball in certain areas of the pitch. But I think that's the stuff I've worked on. And obviously with the way we play, obviously everyone knows we've got some.
Good I got.
I'm going to be nice, you know. So I've got a decent player like you and Zach ahead of me where you know, I don't really have to do a whole heap. I can find you guys the ball pretty easily. And I think it just comes down to the way we play as well. It gives me an advantage. I've got so many options around me and there's always going to be a pass on when I'm in a tight air.
Yeah, no, no, for sure.
And next to you've got another South Australian and Jay Barnett I think that partnership has been, you know, very crucial for us success. How has it been playing obviously with you know, so many other young Essay boys, people that you probably grew up with, other players that you with the NPL. I know Jay's a couple of years older than you, but you know, Jay Johnny ull in there obviously. If Lucas playing, Pana Taller obviously made his debut Cox.
He's now playing. Is it quite exciting? I guess for you to know that, you know, you grew up probably in.
The state teams or around these players, even if there are a few years older or younger, and now you're all playing for the club that you grew up supporting.
Yeah, for sure. I mean you've got to give credit to I mean, I guess the like the youth teams and all of that coming through because they've kind of helped everyone get to where we are, and I think they've started at a young age. But I think obviously playing together, it's kind of not surreal. But you know, I don't really think about it too much until you asked his kind of questions. Yeah, I won the what was it Under eighteen Grand Final with Hanash Johnny looker, Panna and POxy, you know what I mean. So it's kind of like and that was only say, four, four or five years ago now and then you look at us now. I'm we're all, I guess you could say decent contributors to the team. And I think it's just goes to show they've worked very, very hard to get there as well.
No, exactly right, And as I said, I think you've got a very bright future and it's not going to probably be with Adelaide United for too much longer, which is disappointing obviously for the fans and probably the club, but that's the way it works.
I think you've.
Improved so much and you'll keep improving for the end of this season and hopefully stick around for one more.
But you just never know.
We can we can go out on a championship. That would be the best way to do it. But thank you for your time. I'll let you rest up and I'll see it tomorrow at training.
Oh, we'll see you tomorrow. Thank you for having me.
Ethan Elligance Adelaide United to own and a good teammate of Steffans.
So great to have Ethan on the show.
And of course that game coming up again Newcastle is seven o'clock on Saturday night at Cooper's Stadium, so that'll be rocking, should be a good contest. Steffan, what do you know about Newcastle? What are you preparing for in this one?
Yeah, they've probably been one of the sides that have been pretty disappointing to be honest. You know, you look at the ladder, there's teams from you know, third through to ninth that are all competing for finals places and then once it drops off after that maybe Wellington as well, you can put in that, and then you've got the bottom three in Brisbane, Perth and Newcastle.
That you know, they have been struggling.
They've had a performances where you've been like wow, like last week they beat Victory three nil, and you're like, okay, so this this group is quite talented.
They've got good young players.
But then you know they go three four games without a win, and I guess that's what you get with young players. But I think you know, you're expecting a little bit more consistency and they're not going to be an easy team to beat because, like I said, they beat Victory last week three nil, so we know they've got quality. They've brought in a couple of players in January. Misunuma, the Japanese boy, is a very good player. I think he'll start. Lockie Rose has come across who was at McCarthy. He's had a few injuries, but I think, you know, he's back to full fitness, so he'll make a difference.
So they're very good on the ball.
So we just need to make sure that we nullify that, you know, keep the ball and the way we want to play, probably that we've struggled with the last three games.
I would say get back to those basics of what we want to do with the ball.
Our positional player is really important, and forget players like Jay bunnair Ethan Aligic on the ball facing for they can find myself cloth. We can feed the ball through the wingers, the striker and then we create a lot of chances. So it's really it's really just worrying about ourselves because we know if we play well, we'll do extremely well. The last time we played them, we won, I think it was one nil because we've got a red card Falami in the sixtieth minute, So that was one of those games where we should have been three or four now up in the first twenty minutes, which has happened a lot this season.
Didn't take our chances.
One nil ended up being a little bit scary when we got the red card, but we held on. So they'll want to, you know, come over here and prove a point because, like I said, they won last week. Whether they make an make finals or not, I'm not too sure, but they want to push for it. So we need to make sure that we play really well. We need another big crowd. I know there's a live golf on this weekend. That's all anybody's talking about. But once it's done, it's done it.
What is it five o'clock?
I finished four.
Last hit at four. It's not very far to come up to Cooper Stadium, straight up Grain Straid. You'll be there in ten minutes.
The extravagance was sport on a Saturday. That's the way you want to do it.
If you'd like to head along, we have your opportunity right now. Eight double two three double oh double five A double pass. All thanks to our mates City Discount tires Port Adelaide, where you get the best price and advice on tires and Mechanical City Discount Port Adelaide eight double two to three double oh double five is the number calling there. You can win a double pass to Adelaide United's home game on Saturday night quickly before we go to the break. I know you're interested in following our young soukar us who were in action at the moment. In was at the Asian Cup, isn't it? So lost last only just the other day to Japan to one, I believe, so.
That wasn't a great start of the week. But they have the campaign beginning this weekend.
Yeah.
Actually they had the friendly game that was against Japan, so they went to Japan I think it was for seven days, and to be fair, it was probably the best, the best thing for him because for me, Japan will be the champions if it's not Australia.
So it was really good.
They went there for a week, played against obviously the Japanese and then they've just gone over and they actually played their first game. It was last night against Krigistan. They won five to one, which you would expect obviously Krigistan. I'm sure a lot of people maybe haven't heard of the country, but they won five one and sometimes you know, you play against these countries and I've been there with the seventeen twenties twenty threes.
They make it so difficult.
They just fight and scrap everything because this is this is their chance to kind of get a move somewhere else or put their name, you know, into a World Cup, potentially get their country there. And I think the most exciting thing speaking about you know SA boys with Alla and all the players he was naming. You had Stephen Hall in goals, so X Adelaide United Boys, Salter Brighton Hove Albion he was in goals. He had Kickianis at center back, taladeirat left bar, Johnny Yule in the midfield, Luka Yovanovitch up front with Musa Toure. So you've got six Adelaide boys that come through the system here football SA who are big sponsors and believers in this show and help support us. And you've got six players coming through their system that are now playing for the Australia Under twenty team.
Which is pretty incredible.
When you look at Victoria and New South Wales, how big their populations are compared to what it is in South Australia.
Yet we've got six in the starting eleven.
What are we doing right?
I don't know. Ethan shul probably should have pumped his dad up about it. He's there. Airton and Cole.
Were actually part of it for the last probably seven eight years. Now they're obviously involved with Adelaide United, but they were part of that. Elvis Markov as well, who's been a part of it. I think that's the consistency of the same coaches being there where a lot of the other state federations they turn over a lot, so there's obviously something they're doing really well. And we've got plenty more young players we have had. I've had a few training with us from the youth team. Harry Crawford was on the bench, Lani Tattoo was on the bench. So it's it's pretty incredible that the talent that keeps coming through. And best of luck for them, they play guitar. I think it's Saturday night. They need to beat guitar.
The top two go through.
And then they play China in the last game. So China won against guitar, so it's it'll go. I believe you know, you'll probably be Australia against China in that last game.
The top two will go through.
But you want to win against China because you want to be top of the group, so you obviously get the better drawer in the next round.
Absolutely, all right, more to come on the other side of this break. It is thirteen minutes to seven the number if you want to get involved.
Eight double two three double o double.
Oh the World Game with Stefan Mark on five double A.
You're listening to Stephan Mark's World Game.
Of course we are all thanks to Cherry Southern Cherry and they have a great deal.
We can receive up to six thousand.
Dollars bonus on a Mota E five and Amota five or at mor Vale Southern Cherry Stefan Asian Champions League in the Monkster at.
The moment, how they're going.
Yeah, So they they played last night Sydney FC a two to two draw in their home.
Game against Bangkok United.
So should they won that?
Yes, they should have won that.
They actually played pretty well, like twenty shots to ten, sixty two percent possession to thirty eight. They conceded in the ninety fifth minute and it was one of those games where in the first time it started bucketing down with rain throughout and it was just a performance that they deserved a lot more from.
But I guess the biggest worry with this.
So this is the Asian Champions League two and I guess the way this works. So you've now got the Asian Champions League Elite, which Central Coast are in. Yep, You've got the Asian Champions League too, which Sydney FC are in, and then you've got another one below this, which the way it works is the better our teams do, the more points that every win you get, every drawer you get.
How far you get in it, you get points.
Those points then will determine how many spots you get for the following year. Oh and at the moment, Central Coast Marinas in the Age Champions League have got.
Zero wins from seven games, so.
One draw and it's a disaster because the points tally. So you know, teams like Buriam United for example, from Thailand and even Jihor from Malaysia, those two countries are looking to overtake us, and if they overtake us and dominating us, then it could actually mean that we maybe don't have a spot in the Asian Champions League Elite.
So how can you make it back through the twos that you're saying, yes, so you need to win.
So let's say Sydney FC can potentially win this one and that might get us enough points to stay one in the Asian Champions League E League one in this one, but some teams have two in the Elite, one in the second, or they might have one guaranteed in the in the Elite competition one qualifying match.
And then one in the ACL two.
So it's quite confusing, but it's all down to how many wins and points you can get as a country to determining the next year's results, and the money in this is massive now. So for us as a club, we want to win the A League the If we come top of the league before finals, we qualify for the Asian Champions League Elite. If we still have that spot, Auckland can't compete in that. Wellington obviously can't never have been able because they're part of Oceania. So if it stopped right now the league we would be getting that ACEL Elite spot.
If we don't have enough points, then.
We go into the a CL two, which is still okay, but it's not as lucrative. You're not playing against the best team. So for us, you know, as a country, it's just better. You're exposed to more things. And like I said, the prize money is so big now. You're getting way more money now for just qualifying for this ACL Elite than what Central Coast got for winning the ACL.
Two last year. That's amazing.
So we need them.
We need Sydney FC to win the second League against Bangkok, to get through to the quarter final and to keep doing well and fingers crossed Central Coast in their last game can get a win, which I'd like to.
Go to McGill conellers.
Good luck Stephan on Saturday night.
Thank you.
I just wanted to mention that on the second of March coming up, there's a few interesting changes to the laws of the game. They're going to strip the enforce the goalkeeper having to get rid of the ball our states. And the weird thing was instead of a free kick, indirect free kick against the goalkeeper, say he takes twelve seconds and frustrates the crowd, it's going to be left up to the referee to to award a corner or a throw in against against that goalkeeper. The other thing that was really interesting was coaches been able to call for a var review. It sounds it sounds like one in each half, not just leaving it up to the ref or to the guys in the var box and get this killers body cameras by the referees, which is going to be interesting that he dusta, Well.
We don't. We don't need body cameras. To thank you, Con, some good insights there. Did you across all of those yourself?
No, I'm not to be honest, I did hear about it.
I did hear so good to look into that, I'd be quite surprised. I don't know if that's coming in and that obviously CON's got some information maybe that we don't have, But I'd be surprised if that happens during the season.
Maybe I don't know anyway.
But it might beason Yes, potentially, And that's I think something that's been spoken about because it was if you're a goalkeeper, you catch the ball, pick it up, whatever.
Normally you have six seconds to get rid of it.
Sometimes these goalkeepers, because I'm normally near them, they hold on to it for twenty seconds and they're trying to waste time. Of course, that's a lot of time. Then they whatever, they roll on the ground with it, which doesn't actually count the time. So I think it was a bit harsh to give an indirect free kick. So normally, if a goalkeeper held it for ten fifteen and the referee decided to be like, you know what, I'm going to be a bit pedantic here and call you out for this, it's an indirect free kick from wherever they're standing. That's a pretty harsh penalty to give away. I think giving a corner away or a throw in like converse saying it actually makes a lot more sense because it's not guaranteed you're going to score from that, but it's enough to make the keeper be like, you can't, you know, just hold it for twenty thirty seconds. So interesting and obviously with the very articles I know they've been talking about that, I've read a lot of listen to a lot of punditary around that. With a few podcasts I listened to an episode that's what they would prefer rather than VII calling stuff. The coach is similar to a cricket, you know, with the captain the drs.
He has a certain amount. I don't mind that because then you have to as.
A as the coach or as the you have to use it, and if you don't want to use it, you don't use it. So that would be something interesting. The body cam, I'm not sure you know.
That's what do you get out of it? You just get more controversial exactly. Oh, you should have seen it. That's what his view is.
Yeah, and you don't want to maybe hope it doesn't have a microphone in there where they can kick up.
What shouldn't say three minutes to seven?
We are just about a time, but we do have to do this.
Stepens the moment of the weeks day finish to the last ever time me citizen he thunderous Everton Equalizer. What a way to sign off for the.
Grand Old ground now amazing the derby the last one there at a good part. They were amazing scenes though, and there was a fight at the very last whistle as well. Steph and it was quite extraordinary to watch the last.
Bit, No, it was. It was incredible.
I'm trying to get my son ready to take him to take care. I've got it on in the background and all I just heard was the Everton fans are up and being an Arsenal fan, that's exactly we needed at Liverpool to drop points.
Unbelievable finish.
You see the fans run on, then there's obviously the var then there's a fight. Two players get sent off. Honest slot, I think got sent off. The assistant coach maybe as well. I think I read so it was unbelievable. But you know what these shows the passion these Everton fans for them, they've been in Liverpool shadow for so long and they're not saying that they're out of it, but could you imagine that's your home ground for hundreds of years. The last ever game you play there against your rivals and they win, they're going to hold that over to you. They're going to be chanting about that for the rest of their lives. They can't say that anymore because they ended up equalizing. They move into their new stadium next season, so it's it's you know, for for a.
Club like Everton that's rebuilding.
You know, it's an unbelievable ending to the game and I'm absolutely buzzing that Liverpool drops some points.
You would be we are at a time though, mate, Best of luck on Saturday night in Newcastle.
It's going to be a great game.
We'll start previewing the local leagues here as well next week on the World Game, which we look forward to doing each and every season, but we'll be returning on Thursday from six thirty.
Lee Forrest is coming up after the news. Have a great evening.
