The World Game with Stefan Mauk - 06 February 2025

Published Feb 6, 2025, 8:40 AM

From the A-Leagues to the EPL, Adelaide United star Stefan Mauk brings you the latest results, news and analysis from the World Game.

This is the World Game with Stephan Mark thanks to Football Essay bringing South Australian communities together. Great to have you tonight.

It's of course a big Thursday filled with the World Game and you can receive up to six thousand dollars bonus on a Motor E five and a Motor five at Southern Cherry Morphet Vale.

Of course, Stephen Mork is here with us in the studio.

Stephan, good evening to you.

Yeah, good evening.

Nice to be back on and very excited for tomorrow's game to I guess right.

The wrongs of.

Last week mate, there's a lot to talk about, but we don't want to go too deep into last week.

Let's talk about this week.

Tomorrow night, huge, huge game. It would be pretty near a sellout, wouldn't it for Melbourne City at home?

I would assume so.

Obviously the last two games victory in Auckland we got four for I think it was fifteen odd and twelve thirteen odds, so massive, massive crowds.

This one Friday night, perfect conditions is a double header as well, with the women's playing before us.

Melbourne City always tends to attract a decent crowd and They've got some very very good play in James Jego, who was an ex Adelaide United player, played in the Soccer US previously, Matt Lecky, Tillio Azizbach. So three stars and one that's actually not going to be coming Jamie Young. I just want to quickly say he's announced his retirement a goalkeeper, been around the league for a long time. I've played with him. Unbelievable guy. And he messaged me because I said congrats on the career, and he said he's not making the trip over, which it would have been nice to see in one last time with the gloves on.

But I guess it's you know, it's a ruthless business, isn't it.

You want to decide to hang them up and they think, well, he wasn't playing anyway, We're not going to give you a sendoff game, which he does deserve.

But you know, it's a crunch time, isn't it In the season.

It certainly is at this time of year. But some nice words nonetheless for a great player. So we have a different looking side going into this game.

I suppose he got four.

Young ones who aren't going to be there. They're going to be representing Australia at the Asian Cups. So who are there any changes expected to this is the starting lineup at all? Or do you just think it'll be mostly same?

So yeah, well, I guess from last week we had Johnny yule, Kickianis and Talladeera all started. Johnny Yuell and Talladea didn't haven't started a lot of games. I think that was Johnny's maybe second start for the season, Taller's first.

So obviously we've got to replace those three.

He's got a few options and Isaias has played a lot at center back this season, and you know, I think he's been really unlucky just from watching him.

Unfortunate enough.

I get to watch him every day and training and for a guy that's thirty seven, maybe even thirty eight, I can't remember.

Exactly it's it's old, but he moved so well.

Whenever he's played, you know, he's done so well, and it's just you know, Kias has been great, but Verens has been great, Jay Bunnett and Alligatch in those you know, four positions that Issa can play we've just opted for for other players and that's great that we've got that depth now.

He gets an opportunity. And this is why you need to have a good squad.

You can't just have a good starting eleven because there's going to be injuries and obviously things that you know, we we we knew this was going to happen. It was something they obviously spoke about at the start of the sea and that come end of January, start of February, we're going to lose players potentially, which is a good sign. That means that they're playing well. It's a bad sign because we lose them so where we're going to have to cover them. I think Ryan Kiddo is back, he's I assume he'll be okay. He's trained a little bit this week, so it's going to be good to have him back.

Ben Falami as well is in and around the mix.

So we've got players coming back from injuries and if not, we're just going to have to call upon some other young boys. Harry Crawford and Amlani have been in the extended squad announced, so two young guns that.

Have trained with us that have done really well.

On Lani's one, I think the fans, you know, maybe maybe he won't play, maybe he will play.

Him not one hundred percent sure.

But in the future he's going to be a name similar to I Reckon and Aaron kunder the Tour eight Boys, that similar style of exciting, loves the ball at his feet, can do things that not many players can do. He's very raw, a is young, but he's going to be one that I think will bring a lot of fans to the stadiums Now I.

Read with kick out Jordan Elsie's playing in the Adelaide United NPL side tonight they get some match fitness a hitter tomorrow.

Is that true?

Yeah, well, if you read it, I wasn't sure if I'm all had to say that you leaked that, not me, but maybe maybe you know we we do. We do say we're the People's Club, and we do try and be as honest as we possibly can.

So sometimes you're not sure what's what's been.

Broad cannot but obviously if you know about that, then it's not something we're trying to hide. He's you know, it would have been great to have him available for this game, and I'm sure if we really needed him to he could have played.

But luxury is we've got you say that can play there.

So Jordan Elsie will play with the NPL Boys to get those match minutes in because he's coming off in a cl last year, had a few niggli injuries to start this season, so it'll be great to get an experienced player like him back into the fold.

What do you know about Melbourne City?

They're a good side.

They do have a very famous name, which I've spoken about before, in Vidmar or Elia Vidmar the coach. He set the team up extremely well. They play a similar style of foot probably the last four or five years, they've played the same style, high press, want to keep the ball. They've just had injuries, and in saying that, they've actually done extremely well with the amount of injuries they've had to be where they are on the table is a testament to their academy and everything that they've done. So they fall away in the last couple of games I think they've had.

Maybe it's two losses on the bounce.

I believe, so could be wrong with that one, but I think it was MacArthur and Auckland that they lost too. So it's something that we're wary of. They've got Lecky, they've got Tillio that are probably more ready to play longer longer minutes, so we don't want to take them lightly. We're coming off a heavy defeat and we know that if we stick to the way we want to play with the ball without the ball, especially here at home. You know, the fans are amazing for us, and every away team loves playing here as well because it's the best place in Australia to play. But we just need to make sure that they love it at the start of the game and at the end of the game they hate it because they're losing.

So we don't want them to be coming away saying what.

Form it's what a game would an atmosphere and they come away with anything.

We need to get maximum points.

Well, it's gonna be a huge game, and as you said, it's a double head, so if you haven't got tickets, make sure you get along to get some asap tonight or tomorrow morning, get by them and get the family along. It'll be a huge evening and the double header of course starting at four thirty with the women playing as well in the A League Women, so lots to get around tomorrow at Cooper Stadium. And speaking of people getting along and watching in huge numbers here in Adelaide. The last few weeks so participation numbers are in from Football Australia and it just sort of I feel like it goes to show how loved and popular the sport is at the moment. Can you run us through some of the results.

I've come through, Yeah, I can.

This is something that I'm obviously you know as a football player, but as a fan like it's so pleasing to see. On the back of the Women's World Cup, I think especially that that helped massively. But every year the numbers get bigger and bigger. So this year Football Australia announced there was one million, nine hundred and eleven, five hundred and thirty nine participants through every single state and just here in Southeast we had one hundred and twenty six thousand, nine hundred and thirty four, which is pretty crazy when you look at the population of Adelaide and the amount of people that are playing football. And that's probably for me where we've spoken about obviously on this show, how do we connect the whole of football with the local game here. I'm not saying they just have to support the A League, but that's the highest level you can get to in South Australia. In Australia, they can support the NPL as well, they can support their amateur clubs. That's not saying you have to support one or the other. I think it's just having that whole whole of game approach and something that I think obviously we've spoken about Football Australia spoken about I've seen them recently up in Brisbane go together with Football Australia, Football Queensland, Brisbane Row. I think it was to try and get a bit of funding for the stadium up there in Perry Park because it's something that we need.

To get better in. I know there was a big announcement or not announcement.

Today, but the big unveiling down at THEIRBT ten with the Crows, and I'm so glad for.

Them because it's great for them to get these facilities.

But you know, they get fifteen million from the state government, they get fifteen million from the federal government and you look at that and you think, okay, that's brilliant for them. But for Adelaide United, what have we really got? And I'm not saying because it's different, you know, that's you know, the Croser non for profit Adelaide United it's a I guess privately owned. But if you look at the Matildas, you look at the soccer is how many players are actually coming through Adelaide United to play for the national team. So without Adelaide United you don't have these, you know, Charlie Grant's, Craig.

Goodwines, Nessa and Kunda's coming through.

So how do we foster this and make there be not just one Charlie Grant, not just one Nessa?

How do we have five of them? Ten of them?

Because Michael Cooper, who were going to get on shortly the Football Essay technical director, we're producing players at a ridiculous rate in comparison. But I don't feel as if the funding goes to the right places in terms of obviously it goes into sport. I know there was eighteen million for women's sport announced after the Women's World Cup, which again is great. Ten million was for football, but I don't under stand why eight million is going to other sports when that was literally because of the Matilda's And that's something for me where I.

Feel, you know, I'm biased, I'm a.

Football, a football fan, a football player, but I feel like with this platform, it's great to go out there and ask the questions and if they come back and say to us, well you don't have a good enough approach to come to us, and that's then on us and that's what we need to get better at. But I do really think Adelaide United, if we want to keep producing these players, we need to have a facility that can actually do that.

Yeah, do you feel like football helps itself in that regard?

Does it?

Do you think it sells itself well enough to sort of get that money and get that support.

Yeah? Probably not, to be honest, To be completely honest, I think when you've got Football Australia, you've then got so state federations, the national body, then the APL which owns the a leagues, and then the individual teams. I guess my point to that is that you know, in terms of the government giving out money and grants to help sport, why should it just go to someone that has the best business model?

Because if you look at the way that it's.

Been kind of going the last five ten years, the AFL getting bigger and bigger.

For example, rugby league is similar.

So of course they've got more money, they've got more power, they're stronger, they can keep getting.

More and then it's the rich get richer kind of scenario and the.

Squeakie will gets the grist as well in some way. And because they make so much noise, you can see why exactly.

And I'm not saying that they don't deserve the money that they're getting. I'm just saying, well, if they deserve that, they get out, you know, exactly right. And it's the same, you know, I look at I think Fetherton great, unbelievable facility. Would that not have been an ideal thing to think, you know what, maybe we can get Adelaide United and Adelaide Crows in the same facility. It's government money and we don't need as big of a facility potentially because we maybe couldn't put in as much money. But was that not the perfect thing to say we can kill two birds with one stone. Here it's close to Adelaide over, it's close to Cooper Stadium, and we've got this unbelievable precinct that actually is supporting both sports.

That's yeah, that's my two cents.

No, I know, it's absolutely worthy of putting out there. If you have a thought around this eight double two to three double O double O, because I feel like this has been an ongoing discussion for a very very long time when it comes to the football here in Australia, and probably a good opportunity to welcome in our next guest, Stephan, who's of course connected throughout South Australian football.

Yeah, Michael Cooper.

He's He's someone that's actually come from from overseas. He's been in New South Wales and now he's come to South Australia and I'm excited to I guess to have him on here because I've actually been speaking to him for quite a while and I think it's going to be interesting to hear his thoughts about football here in South Australia and then also what he thinks is going well and what we can really improve on.

All right, so let's welcome in into the show now, Mike Cooper, thanks.

For joining us, Thanks for having me.

Now we've just been discussing around funding and support to try and grow the sport in our state. You've also got a great announcement as well in some way to create a new structure for promoting the game in our state.

Yeah.

Sure, So we've got a competition structure coming in this year, which is really going to allow clubs to just provide a better environment for young people. It's going to bring coaches together as well, and essentially it's just going to create a better match day experience for everyone and hopefully more better players will get developed as a result as well.

How much How long have you been working on this, Michael?

When I first joined it was almost three years ago. Now, I kind of saw that the biggest opportunity was to adapt a better model for competition or for gameplay. The model that we're using is nothing new. It's kind of been done in the other States, but we're just trying to do it a different way learn from their implementation. So essentially it's not a new model. But our approach is going to be helping clubs, which you know we're going through the process now, a building relationships with key people within clubs and then hope try and help them just be better at youth coaching and be better at youth environments and then yeah, just grow together. Basically.

Yeah, And I guess from my point of view, I guess what I would like to hear with you is coming across from let's say New South Wales coming to Adelaide, How have you found because what we were just speaking about is obviously you know, we're not always united in our approach. You've obviously the federation in Football Australia, then got the state federation so you're now at Football SA and then underneath that you've got the NPL clubs, plus you've got Adelaide United in the mix as well. So how have you found it since moving here with the relationships you know with Football Essay, with the NPL clubs and then also you know, mixing in Adelaide United with that in comparison to Football New South Wales.

Yeah, so New South Wales is different and I think each state has got its own context. So there's twenty six associations underneath New South Wales Football, so you know that's twenty six other identities and they've all got full time staff as well in their own leagues. Within that, you've got five A League clubs now up there, so you know, essentially that's five squads of each age group getting pretty good training. So they're quite far ahead compared to Adelaide. I think the biggest thing I noticed was the clubs don't have many people in paid roles, lots of volunteer based coaching, so it's really helping or trying to trying to kind of open club's eyes for what other clubs are doing around the country. You know, in Queensland, for example, there's quite a few clubs with full time technical stuff, not just you know, managers or market marketing. There's a couple of clubs with three or four technical staff full time. So that's the biggest difference. There's going to be a journey, there's you know, it's just redirecting finances and getting clubs to think about things differently. And essentially, I think this country is a development country, so we need more environments having a developed and focused Yeah.

No, and yeah your spot on I think you know, you obviously had the coach's conference on Saturday as well, when I know from speaking to you said there was one hundred and fifty coaches that were there attending. That is that something that you see as a sign of things that are really improving from that buy in?

I hope, so three years ago as eighty people now it's one hundred and fifty. Hopefully it's a sign that we're providing better experiences, but also people are trusting what we offer as well. I'm really hoping to sign of more people wanting to give back to the game. And if coaches are getting better, then they're going to need better environments to work with in. So you know, even this new structure is creating conversations around roles like technical director within clubs. In essay, that's really really good. You've got male and female programs in some clubs working closer together now to try and leverage off of each other. So I think it is a sign of progress. And last night we had a PSV workshop just over fifty coaches and that's off the back of Adelaide United's relationship with PS three, So you know, relationships like that are helping the clubs as well and helping us help coaches, So lots of positive and the coach education side of things.

Yeah, no, I think that's and that's awesome and that's something that you know, obviously, me being part of of Adelaide United, I really want the whole of South Australia.

You know. I understand obviously you've got your NPL club.

So when our youth team's playing against Metro Stars, I don't expect Metro Stars fans to be going for Adelaide United, but in terms of wanting what's best for the game is Adelaide United is the top team right now, so we hopefully are getting everyone in South Australia supporting us. And then we need to also then understand well, how can we give back to the community, and that's by having this relationship with PSV, which is unbelievable. You know, if we can give back to these coaches and have these conferences like you held last night, that's a great way for us to show that we're not here to just take we also want to be able to give back.

Is unbelievable. And then the last thing with Adelaide, you know.

The wheel is always take obviously or normally, take the best players from Football South Australia's program once they progress. We've got a lot of young players in the national team set up as well for the seventeens, twenties, twenty threes. Why is it, you know, obviously, without just saying your coaches and are extremely good, why do you think it is that we're able to develop so many players to make it at this professional level for a state that has a much smaller population compared to.

You know, especially Victoria and New South Wales.

Yeah, it's a great question, and it's a question I kind of asked when I first come down here. There's a number of reasons, and you know, I really want to say it's definitely not everything that we're doing at the state program. Clubs impact player development. Mum and Dad impact player development. A lot of the players are in school football programs now they have a big impact. But essentially I think the pathway that the you know, they go to Adelaide at fifteen sixteen, they're playing men's football regularly in the MPL. You know, I think a couple of years ago the average age or the NPL squad was seventeen point two years, So they're getting men's football at a young age. And you know, by the time they're coming in to train with yourself in the Adelaide or playing next to you on the field, they've probably played fifty sixty men's men's football games. I think that pathway is essentially what is helping players here. And then obviously the coaching that Adelaide provides as well, and then once you get one or two in the national teams and those players do well, I think the people that look for players respect what's going on down here, so three or four get an opportunity and then once it just kind of rolls, if that makes sense. But I think the biggest thing with the numbers, there's a lot of players that are getting opportunities in the front third, and we all know that's an issue for Australian football, and I think it's really nice to just point out that some of the Adelaide players that are getting the opportunities to the front third players the creative, they're trying to do something different. And look at the ones that have moved on recently from Adelaide as well. You know, fun for players, which is which is great for Australian football.

Yeah, No, one hundred and it's it's great to hear. Obviously, it's the men's, it's the it's the women's obviously are all being extremely successful here in South Australia.

And we thank you for jumping on the phone call.

I'm sure you're extremely busy, so we'll definitely have to talk to you maybe halfway through the season to see how it's going. But yeah, thank you for jumping on, Mike and.

We'll speak to you.

So problem thanks for having me. Thank you.

Mike Cooper from Football is a technical director and does a lot of really great work to promote the sport in our state. It is currently ten minutes to seven. We're back on the other side of this. We've got a lot to talk about in terms of the World Game.

The World Game with Stepan Mork on five Double A.

I think you're going to save up to two thousand dollars bonus on a Motor E five and a Motor five Southern Cherry More val. They are great people and we love this support on the show. If you'd like to head along to the of course Adelaide United game tomorrow night. It is a new sellout. It's going to be a cracker against Melbourne City. All thanks to Sydney Discount tires Port Adelaide who have the best advice and price on Tyson Mechanical. We have two tickets to give away right now eight double two to three double O double five call in right now, those could be yours. There's a massive week in the A League football coming up those Steffan, any games that you've got your eye on real quickly.

I think the biggest one is Saturday night the Sydney Derby the third one of the season. Sydney FC obviously coming off a very good win against US last week and Western Sydney a good away win. So both of those teams are fighting essentially to get into the top six or keep their spot in the top six, and it always is always a packed house one matter. Hopefully he's fit for the game at Douglas Costa two big stars. I'm definitely going to be tuning into that one on Channel ten and paramount.

A Premier League update what's just said to.

The UK So big weekend of course coming up over there too, but I do want to focus in on the Carabell Cup. We have a huge semi final Second League tomorrow. This is going to be a high ramification.

Though it is, I think, you know, as much as I hate to say it, I want Tottenham to win tomorrow. They're one nil up against Liverpool and needs this, he really does.

He obviously had a good win.

On the weekend, but for this club, they haven't won a trophy in a very long time. The other team that's in the final, Newcastle, will beat Arsenal seventy years without a trophy.

So if it's Newcastle Tottenham.

It's going to be a massive game and I really hope for Andre's sake, as I said that, you know, he can get Tottenham their first trophy in a long time because it will kind of it will give him a bit of breathing space. It's great for an Australia. He always says, I'll win things in my second year. He says, I don't. Maybe I do win things in my second year.

And if he can.

Win this, I think, you know, it will put a lot of people back into their box because I know it's not the result they wanted the Premier League, but for this cup competition they're still in. Then the FA Cup they're in the Europa League. So essentially he's still got three trophies he's playing for, which is unbelievable, it.

Really really is. So maybe the Premier League just takes a back seat in terms of results potentially amazing and your mob Arsenal just quickly because you've got a big weekend for them too.

Yeah, no, we do.

We're We've just had a massive, a massive win against Manchester City five to one. Now we've lost in the cup and it's their FA Cup. To be completely honest and we lost the last round, so it is a big weekend for our boys because we're going to Dubai for a nice summer vacation.

This is the level of that you're at there.

When there major sponsor flying rens, they jump on a private jet they head away to Dubai for four or five days to refresh, get some sun. So I hope you know. We didn't sign any players, which was a disaster. We lost this morning, so we need to get away and just forget about it for a a little bit. Come back six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League into the next round of the Champions League.

So the two biggest trophies we're there to play for, and I think we'll win both of those.

That sounds like the best place to be right now, just getting away out of the country, Golo holiday, that sounds really nice. It's three to seven. We are at a time though, But tomorrow night, best of luck. We're going to take the sports show there with Rowing and Timmy from four o'clock tomorrow, so we'll try and get you across the line. But Adelaide night a huge match, So best of luck tomorrow night, Stephane.

Enjoy no thank you very much
