Yes, very very happy to be here.
And obviously the last few weeks before this were on the back of losses.
This one was a draw on the weekend.
But I would say a way to Auckland, a team that really doesn't concede goals and doesn't really drop points to be honest, at home we came away with a four to four draw, probably match.
Of the season in my opinion.
And yeah, where I think on a good way and sometimes you do need to go through that dip in form during the season, and much better that it comes in the middle rather than right at the.
End when you're preparing for finals.
So give us a call to a double two three, double O double O. If you watch the Reids on the weekend, it was a great Saturday afternoon fixture over there at the top of the table, clash in Auckland, and to see what was just such a brilliant It felt like a brilliant comeback because you were three to one down at one point late in the second half, a couple of good goals, a couple of penalties as well, and then you get to the ninetieth minute you think, well, if we can hang on or just get a late one, that'd be great. But then you fall behind four to three and you sit in there going we've let this go. We're gonna like it's a ninety second minute. How do you sneak one in with only a handful of extra stoppage minutes left? Well, you found a way. Ninety eighth minute, wasn't it? And then it was a four order or it was a classic of a game, but just thrilling on the edge of your seat.
Stuff, Yeah, it was. It was. We kind of knew what to expect from them.
Obviously, they're a very direct team. They love set, they love long throw in their physical they've got big boys, to be honest, and playing at home, their grass is a little bit longer there, just so the ball holds up when they knocked these long wols. Everything's in their favor. There were seventeen thousand there. It was a great crowd. It's a tough place to go. It's probably the hardest away place to go currently in the A League, I would say, and European atmosphere.
It really does.
And what they've done there is remarkable in their first season, and you know, hats off to everyone involved in the club that they deserve all the plaudits that come their way. You know, they scored a screamer may cut in on his left and we've saw the videos of him being able to do that, but to be honest, to do that is world class.
You know, yes, we could have defended it better, but that one you put your hands up to.
The long throw was really disappointing to concede and we've spoken about it this week.
To nil down and then.
I kind of looked like we're all over the shop and as I was just saying off here to you, I was sick all last week. So being on the bench it's actually way worse because you can't control anything. I'm stressed out like a fan then watching it and thinking I can't do anything here. I was getting more annoyed watching it from the bench and when I'm actually out there. But Elsie, you know, came up big in his first start for the club in a while, set piece goal and I think that just gave us a little bit of a boost to kind of get back into the game. We went into halftime and you know, we knew they threw their best punches at us.
We're two one down.
We felt like, you know what, we're ready to go in the second half, and they scored from a corner which was very similar to the corner they scored here at a Cooper Stadium to make it two two in the ninety fifth, ninety six minute, and again it was deflating, and we got a bit of a controversial penalty from the var I think it was soft, but you know what, sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't, so you take it. And then yeah, we won another penalty through myself in the seventy ninth minute, Zach Club stepped up and I think when I went three to three, I was like, you know what, we've got them here. They changed to a back five, put another center back on, and I felt like, you know what, we've got the legs in us. They were cramping. I think we can win this game. And then you know, they had a few crosses going into the box.
Their crowded the port.
I think they're called, we're getting up and about down that end, and you know, just one attack after the other, and eventually they did score, and it was so deflating on the field, and you know, the crowd obviously goes up.
And you just as a player, you feel that small.
You think, you know, we've worked so hard, we got back to three to three, and we've thrown it all away. But I guess what, you know, kind of showed our resilience as a group was to keep fighting to get this last minute equalizer with bartreens of all, yeah exactly, and you know, like I think that's you know, you can say it's only one point, but that point got us back into equal second. It's so close right now. We need top two. That's what we're aiming for second spot. If Auckland come top gets US Asian Champions League, so that point could be the difference between coming second and third come and the season, and I think it's really galvanized the group to say, you know what, when we play our best, we can match it with Auckland, who are the best. And that was away from home. So I'm yeah, I'm very very confident. We've got two home games now against has been this Saturday four thirty and then the following week MacArthur on a Friday night. So we've got to kind of right out wrongs of our home form recently and put in some really good performances and more importantly get the result.
Yeah all right, Well, if you've got thoughts on the game, let us know eight double two to three double o double o's the number, like David from Highgate and once to have a chat, Hi Dave.
Good guys. I define look the congratulations on. I was a bit surprised that you didn't start, but now I know you were cooked. You in the week when you came on, I think you gave us a great energy and you know that run into the box where the penalty came was was was fantastic and brave. I do have a question though, and it probably should be directed at Carl, But because you're the captain, you're my opportunity. I am. I'm a bit old scorn. I'm gobsmacked by the fact that we never and most most teams never put players And you mentioned it's a good Stegway about the long throw and the corners. We never put players on the post on the defensive corner or long throw now, and I'm telling you right now that second goal. It wasn't It wasn't a great effort defensively. And I'm not going to point, you know, the finger of particular individuals, but there were so many goals from corners and long throws that would easily be defended if there was a player inside of each post. Yeah, what's just coming on that? And why is that not something?
Now?
Is it just not sexty to do it or what?
It's a good question.
I think, you know, it's probably been quite a number of years since we've a lot of teams have done that, and we have huge Gallekovich that.
Does a lot of our set pieces.
A lot of a lot of clubs kind of either get the goalkeeper coach or one of the assistants to kind of take charge of the set pieces, and it probably is something to look at.
Obviously, like you said, it does stop.
But the issue that is, if you have one on the front and one on the back, you're losing two players. So whether that's two players in the zone or players that are man marking, or if you want to have a player up front for a counter attack, So two players on the on the goal line obviously takes away from that. I just think we need we set up in a way where we knew what they were going to do and we just needed to defend it better.
Individually.
Collectively we need to be stronger and set pieces, you know, win new games and make you lose games. And this was a game where we scored four away from home. We should have won that game, but we conceded from a couple of set pieces. So it's something we spoke about during the week as players. It's something we spoke about with the coaches, something we worked on in the training ground that individually we just need to be stronger.
But I do get your point. I think in.
Juniors we always used to do that and it was always nice when you kind of cleared one off the line. But I think the setup isn't the issue. I think it's you know, individually, we just need to be stronger. But appreciate the call.
Yeah, excellent work, Thank you, Dave. If you want to have your say a double two three double o double, oh, just quickly before we move off the reads, I do want to ask you about our situation with.
The keepers Ethan Cox.
I want your opinion. I know you can't really be harsh or too critical, but because he's a teammate, but thirteen goals in the last five games, if you just go the last three games, still nine goals lit through, that's a little bit too much, isn't it when you really need to be competing at the top of the order of the competition.
Yeah, oh, most definitely.
And you know what, as a goalkeeper, I think it's the I would hate to be a keeper one because who wants to stand in the goals when people are smashing balls at you. It just doesn't make sense. They've all got a few screws loose, I think to want to put their hand up to going goals. It's a tough job because when you do make a mistake, it's highlighted because it's a goal. You know, if I make a mistake in midfield, there's still a lot that needs to go wrong for it to turn into a goal. If I miss a shot, you know, it's not good, but it's not the worst thing. But if you make a mistake that leads to a goal or play a part in that, obviously it's always highlighted. And you know, he's got one of the best attitudes I've seen. I think, you know, Deli and IV has been back involved now for the last couple of weeks. Obviously they've got a decision to make. I don't know what way they'll go with that, but you just have to learn. I think as a keeper it's a tough like it's a tough job, you know. I think it's almost a different sport, to be honest, and you're out on the field, you don't get to impact the game if you make a mistake. You can't then go and run and make a tackle and work hard. It's you know, you're just standing in the goals and you've got your thoughts kind of ticking through your head. It's like golf and tennis when it's it's really you it's you you in that in that situation.
You guys, defenders anything, sort of give him a little tap on the back, stay you know, positive with them.
Yeah, I think I think.
I think we let ourselves down against Western United when he made a mistake and we didn't get around him, and that's what we spoke about.
I think he's really good.
He's very vocal, and he tries to stay engaged in the game and he works, like I said, very hard. I think he will become a top goalkeeper. I think it's just also something you need to go through and make these, you know, small mistakes or learn what it's like because from youth football to senior men's football it's a big jump and the only way you get better is by playing games. So it's you know, it's a situation where Cole loves to give the trust to young players when they come in and give him quite a few games because he's deserved it.
It's not like it's just been handed to him on a plate.
Yeah. But now, obviously the players we've got back from injury, obviously Delinov, but not just that, we've got the four young Soccer US boys back, other players back from injury, so there's a lot of competition for spots now and this is similar to what we had at the start of the season when we were so successful. So I think you know, it's a tough job for Carle at the moment to choose who wants to play in all the positions.
Yeah, well that's a great issue to have, isn't it when you've got so much depth now coming back and able to make your team stronger. If you'd like to head along and watch and support our reads when they take on Brisbane on Saturday, double pass up for grabs right now for a first call of three eight double two to three double oh double five, all thanks to our great mates at City Discount tires Port Adelaide, where we know you'll always get always get the best advice and price on tires and mechanical City Discount tires Port Adelaide. So that is a game coming up on Saturday. Best of luck to you guys in that game. But a couple of players who you just mentioned before, who were coming back from the Young Soccer Us who was victorious an amazing Saturday Nights Sunday morning even when they took on Saudi Arabia and knocked them off in the final of the Under twenty Asian Cap, so first silverware and underage four Australia in that competition for US, which is amazing, a first Asian Cup win for Australia in ten years.
So just such a.
Brilliant, heartwarming story and great glow for what is potentially lying a hit for Australian football.
Yeah, it's something like you said, that hasn't been done before. I think you know, as a as a group, they were going there to qualify that the goal, the objective was to qualify for the World Cup, which meant you just needed to make the last four off and they ticked it off and then you know they're probably thinking, well, we're here now, we might as well go ahead and do it and win something, because you know, it doesn't matter whether it's under twenties, whether it's men's senior football, women's senior football, it's difficult to win things and you know they're going to go down in history to do that. I think, you know, looking at it from a you know, obviously a teammate but also a fan, you know, it was so pleasing to see our boys do so well.
Johnny Yule played.
Almost I think in every game, whether he was starting or coming off the bench. Panekickianis was unbelievable. Luka Yovanovitch was top and Talladeerra who hasn't played a lot for US, you know, he started almost I think every game besides maybe Kauitar and then the final he was saying today it was because of loading, they said, and they brought him on at halftime, so obviously you know they needed him out there. And it's just incredible because it sets them up and it probably gives more credibility to the A League and also credibility to Australian players when overseas clubs, you know in Europe for example, looking at players, they're thinking, well, okay, what is this league like you what are Australian players like, Well, they've just won the Asian Cup, so they've beaten you know, the Saudi Arabians, they've beaten Japanese boys.
They've obviously you know, not that.
They played South Korea, but South Korea didn't win, and they're so highly respected those countries over in Europe right now, so it's like, well, if these boys are beating them, maybe they're better. So it adds maybe a few dollars to their price tag when you're trying to sell them, which I'm sure our Adelaide United staff and owners are very happy about. But more importantly, it gives them a chance to go to the World Cup in Chile this offseason, to match it with US in September, to match it with the best best players in the world and again, you know, hopefully get a dream move. So also shout out to big Stevie Hall, the goalkeeper.
Just what a save.
It was actually very similar to Mark Schwartz's in the penalty shootout against you guy, just the opposite way, but it was that higher arm had to stretch over the shoulder.
It's difficult to.
Do it like, not that we're keepers, but it's it's you're going down lower and to reach your arm up like that. It was a massive save and yeah, it's great for him. And then Musa to eight as well, another Adelaide United graduate who's come through being sold on to to clem On in France and now he's actually just moved to Randas with his brother in Denmark. So you know, we've had six boys in that squad that played a massive part out of you know what probably eighteen twenty man squad. We've got a third of the team from South Australia and we're a small, small little city here and the population is tiny, but we just produced top class players and yeah, it's it's great from Adelaide, United Foot, South Australia, all of the NPL clubs, so there's a lot going right here and we just need to, you know, keep guiding these players so they can go on to have successful careers and eventually be playing for the soccers.
Really well said Stephan Mark is the voice you're hearing here on the World Game on five double A. Get involved with the show. We'll take more e calls out for the break and speaking of local players and local homegrown talent, we're going to talk a little bit of NPL next with the update around our local sides, and then we'll go abroad. We'll talk about the UAFO League and of course the Premiers League. Two in action the World Game with Stephan Mark on five double A. We have time for your call still eight double two to three double O double. If you want to get involved you can. Stephan mork is here with us. All thanks to Southern cherryot More for Vale we can receive up to six thousand dollars bonus on a Motor E five for Cherry second Australian anniversary. Let's talk quickly local the NPL. We're into two rounds now third round this weekend.
They've actually got.
A break for the Cup competition, so very early in the season for the Cups happened. But this is the Australia Cup, I believe, so to get through you need to get to the final ESSENTI I think you get top two spots. South Australia gets two entries into that, so it's a big deal.
You know.
Obviously the Australia Cups the national stage. Danny Graystone spoke about that they want to be competing on that. So this is kind of where you've got to You've got to have a bit of depth because once these games start coming thick and fast, you've got to kind of win on all fronts, don't you.
Tied bodies and infery and all sorts of things can start to come to the fore, can't they. So exactly, anything from last weekend that took your eye from the NPL.
Well, probably the biggest thing was Playford City who have just recently been promoted. At the NPL launch, I spoke to their coach and he'd been there for I think six seven years, had been at the club, for got them from State two up to finally in the NPL. And they've just won eight to one against Para Hills and there's a bit of a rivalry, you know, two Northern teams and Paro Hills. I know, at the start of the season a few people said, I don't think they're going to go too well. And they drew their first game three to three with Bikala, which is probably not a bad result, and then to lose eight one is yeah, it's not the way you want to be kind of getting off to the start of your season. So they've got a long way to go to come back from that. But I guess the other big results Campbelltown win.
Less to start.
Our other guest that we had on was Dan Mullen as a coach, and he said he was loving it. I don't know if he's loving it anymore because he's lost his first game and now he's drawing his second game three to three with the Calla. You know, it's just difficult, you know, because things can go your way or not go your way early in the season.
But that's really where the confidence I think gets built.
So I'm sure you know, in the cup competition in their next game, he'll really want to get a win. They're playing play for too obviously on the back of a big win, so you want to get some points on the board early as a coach, just to kind of relax everyone.
And Metro Stars.
Are now two from two, beating Adelaide City one nil, which is a big game. Obviously, those two clubs are probably along with Campbelltown and the three biggest, you would say, So yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how that competition goes. Obviously, as we said, the winner of this the league, not the Grand Final, but the winner of the league gets entry into the new National Second Vision competition which is at the end of the season, running from October through to December. So there's a lot at stake and I think, you know, the players, I'm sure themselves are excited about that. And even though it's a long way away, you know, you don't want to lose three or four.
To start the season because then you're too far away from top.
I look forward to the day we can start discussing what the National second Division looks like, because I reckon you'd have some thoughts, and a lot of people in this country around that competition.
Has some thoughts.
Let's move on, though, because we do want to talk about lots happening in the round of sixteen that started this morning.
In the ua FOR Champions League.
What has happened today?
Yeah, well today, I guess the biggest results were Liverpool one nil against PSG. And I my father in law, if he's listening, he's a big Liverpool fan. Obviously he's given me a lot of stick with Arsenal struggling in the Premier League, and they were horrible this morning. I'm talking the worst I've seen them play. PSG were unbelievable. I think it was twenty seven shots to two and they've somehow won one nil and it's just ridiculous.
And you know what the.
Sign of a good team is when you have a bad day and you've got that resilience to stick in there and win it, and you need players to step up there. Keeper Allison he was pulling saves left right center and he was man of the match by a country mile.
Their subhave Elliot's.
Come on and scored and don a rumor for PSG and the other goals had nothing to do the whole game, and that was the one savior to make and he's kind of got a bit of a weak hand to it.
But you know what.
Now PSG have to go on the road next week to anfield and win away from home, which is.
Going to be difficult. But you know, they really impressed me.
The other results, Barcelona one nil away to Benfica into two nil, a way to fine Ord, buying Munich against buyer Levicus and a massive German kind of clash there and buying Munich three nil against Levicus and which is kind of I think almost ended that tie. And then yesterday we had Arsenal my boys dancing back. We haven't scored in a while, we've got no striker, everybody saying we can't score. We scored seven against PSV and our affiliation with Adelaide United, our owners also owned PSV. Yeah, so our technical rick that Ernest, he wasn't too happy.
On yesterday morning.
I came in with an Arsenal jersey actually and was showing in the emblem.
But he was laughing.
And you know, it's one of those games where you just you can't believe it's happened.
Because it's a massive stage.
You can lose, but to lose seven to one in front of your home fans, it's pretty terribly. And then in the Madrid Derby Rail against Athletico Rail one two one at home at the Bernabil. So you know next week you obviously got the return legs and yeah, very very excited to see kind of who goes through from these games.
But yeah, if you if you didn't watch this morning, jump on.
I think you can watch them on YouTube, to be honest, on Stand Sports their their program on there. You can watch all the highlights and and not that I work for Stand, but sign up to watch next week because you know, this is the business end of the season. This is when everybody wants to be watching these big games. And yeah, it's just it's top level football. You you honestly can't beat it.
Well, that's the Champions League, that's what it is, filed exactly that way, Premier League. Just before we disappear tonight, a little bit going on. You were talking about Arsenal there they are your team. What's going on at the moment.
Yeah, it's just that what is going on. It is excuse.
I've heard other pundits say you can't use it as an excuse because the players you have available, well, that's all you've got and if you've got injuries, it's your fault, which is technically true.
The last two weeks we didn't score a goal.
Even the week before we scored two past Leicester who are one of the worst teams in the league, and only just scored in the you know, the eightieth minute, eighty fifth minute, whatever it was.
So we've just been struggling and you know what.
You have to kind of take your hat off to Liverpool because they've had a hard run the last three games. I think they played Villa away, City at home and Newcastle at home. They beat Newcastle comfortably to nil. They beat City away and they drew with Villa. So you know, when push comes to shove, the team that's stepped up the most, it's been Liverpool. They're thirteen points clear, they've broke out a game in hand. Can I see Arsenal coming back like Michael tell Us come out saying I'm not going to stop believing that we can't win it until we can't win and that's the attitude you have to have.
You do.
But you know, are very.
Very realistic person, and I think the Premier League is.
Gone for us.
So do you think that's it?
Yeah, you know, even if we win that game in hand, you come back to ten points. Ten points. That means we need to probably win every single game from now till the end of the season, eleven games and hope Liverpool, you.
Know, lose three and draw one. Do I see that happening. Probably not.
It's Liverpool's to lose. The pressures on them, and fair play to them. They've done extremely well and we're still six points clear and second to Forest and we've had, you know, terrible red cards against us, We've had all these injuries, so I think it's still a successful season. But if you don't get a trophy, that's kind of the way you show that you're a top class manager in our tetor and he's got his haters out there, so fingers crossing the Champions League we can win that and then I'll be Okay. Champions League is just as good as the Premier League, so we'll see. Because we've got either either Madrid team in the next round. I'm guaranteeing we've got through. We're seven one up. We're not blowing that league. We should we should play our under eighteen to be honest and just rest everyone else. Do you mention thatdn't.
I would never speak about arsenally you.
Might not come in mate. Thank you so much for another fantastic show. We've run out of time tonight, but we wish you all the best on Saturday, and I hope you're back in full health.
You're all good now, Yeah, I'm all good now. And big game Brisbane Raw.
Get down there.
We're actually the curtain raiser for the girls Independence Women's Day, International Women's Day.
Sorry, so where the curtain raiser?
Stick around afterwards to watch the women who are on a ten game unbeaten run. I think if they win this week they break the club record. I'm pretty sure. So they're flying, they're trying to chase down Melbourne City, so get around them, don't just come for us, stick around for both teams and yeah, looking forward to a massive crowd.
Outstanding stuff, Stephan Mark. Thank you so much mate. We will see you next Thursday night. We did say last week it'll be a new time at six o'clock next week. It definitely will be because next week. That's right, we're back to normal programming this week, so six o'clock for the World Game next week if you want to join us before our footy coverage begins now from six thirty going forward
