Wind Down with Janet Kramer, an iHeartRadio podcast. Okay, episode three of season thirteen, gaddets, I have to say this is this was hands down my favorite episode. And I'm a little jealous that we did not get rat Pack Night when I was on it last year because I'm obsessed with Frank Sinatra. I love all of his songs. I'm like, I'm a huge, huge, huge fan. I have a really good Frank Sinatra story that I feel like I just need to share. I've told you before. Yeah, So one of my someone that I worked with in the music industry, older, older gentleman, he said he had the best Frank Sinatra story, and so he told me, and I just remember this being so cool. So he was at a restaurant when he was in I think it was like high school or something, and he was on a date and he sees Frank Sinatra in this bar in New York, and so he goes over to Frank's table and he's like, oh my gosh, I'm such a big fan, like Frank, You're just amazing, and I mean just just saying all this stuff to Frank Sinatra and he's like, you know, I'm on a date. And I would just be so cool because the girl had walked away to the bathroom, so it could be so cool if you could just, you know, maybe come over to the table and pretend that you knew me. And Frank just looks up and it's just like dead pan staring at him, gives him no reaction whatsoever, not like a oh, hey, nice to meet you, or like hi, yes, sure, not a problem, or even like an f off, like just I mean, like nothing. So then he's like, uh, I'm so sorry to interrupt your meal, like apologies, Sir Sinatra, like you know, and goes back to his meal and his lady comes back, and so when they were wrapping up the dinner, Frank comes over, comes over to the table and he's like, I'm just going to make up his name, but he's like Freddy, good to see you a long time. He's like, how you been kid, and he's like it was just just astounded that he that he did that, and he just like ended up talking to them for a good like five minutes, and his date was just so impressed that he She's like, how do you know Frank Sinatra. He's like, oh, you know, we go way back.

I've been funny if he said his girlfriend or the person he's on the date with.

God, he's so rude. Went up to speak to him.

He just doesn't say, I know, right, But I just ever since Sountu and I'm like, I love his music and he's so good. But to start the show of the rap Pack theme, Robin Think came out singing fly Me to the Moon, and I mean, he is just such an amazing crooner, you know, like he's amazing. It's what they're called, like that type of singers like Michael Buble.

Oh right, okay, yeah, yeah, yes, he's excellent.

Yeah, I mean so so, so good. So I just what we're What was your thought of the opening?

What was my thought of the opening? I was exciting when it was rat packne and opening.

The opening's always good regardless of the theme. But yeah, Robin Robin was good.

So the first up to perform was Coral Clues, where I grew up on the East Coast. Class ring goes through cards saying she's the luckiest lady in the world, and she's saying lucky a lady, which I loved at first, I wasn't sure. I'm like the spin she put on it first, I'm like, do I like that? And I'm like, no, it's pretty cool. I like how she made it her own and she's got an incredible voice, and like everyone said, she's definitely the front runner for sure vocally, I think, and do you think that? I do. I think she's a very strong vocalist. She's definitely a singer.

I think do you have thought Aunt was better?

Oh?

Really, Well, let's talk about kral first because we've got to go in the order.

Yes, we the with Korl. The clue they were given away was the big blue z.

On our leg, weren't they yeap, which, to be honest, didn't really help me because I still didn't know have a clue who it was.

The guesses were all the guesses.

The guess is Jenny said Rachel.

Rachel Ziegler, Rita said Kamila Mendez, and Robin said Victoria Justice.

Did you think any of those?

I would probably go with Victoria Victoria Justice. Kimila Mendez is a really good guest too, But that one is surprising me. I just I really don't know, but I honestly think that she I do think she's definitely a singer. I'd be shocked if she wasn't.

Non of the clues I got you Yep, grew up in Niece Coast class class ring ghost.

No, I'm not really good when it comes to guessing people. I'm just always like, everyone sounds great and I think I recognize that voice, but I don't really know. But then the second up to perform was Aunt girl Group Lollipop ex clue. I knew from the girl group right away who it was. Oh did you Yeah? Yeah, I knew right away because of the yeah that girl group clue, and because of everything that she was saying, and then her packages of you know, she's of all I mean literally of all the things that she said. She had to hide and be fearful and she couldn't speak out and she's now speaking out and owning her. So I was like, oh, I know exactly who this is because I just saw documentary about it all. Oh really, Yeah, So I did guess that one, but we can't say who it is just yet. Yeah. Guess is though were Rita Ris aid Charlie.

She had worked with Charlie okay.

Robin said Aubrey, O'Day, and Ken said mel B, which I thought maybe she was already on the show.

It was a strange one, but.

Ken is kind of the wild card then after that, but I thought her song was great. I always you know, I kind of had an idea that she was a singer as well, but now you know, girl group again just really sealed the deal for me. Third up to perform was Papa Rozzo, Italian changed his last name for a stage name in a band, and he's saying that's a more by Dean Martin. I love him. He's probably my favorite singer in the group. But I still think Quarrel stronger, and I still think it's Matthew Lawrence.

I do, even with the stage cleared monsters on screen aren't so scary.

Yeah, why who do you think it is?

I think Ken's guess is a good one, Michael Sarah.

I also think if it's Michael Sarah, like wow, because I just would never I don't know, I mean.

Did they change so he only changed these last name right, which means the guess of Matthew Lawrence.

I don't know many Italians are called Matthew.

Oh really No, there's more Michaels than Matthew's.

Absolutely, yeah, Okay, a lot more that kind of threw me a little bit on the on the Matthew Lawrence one, just because it's never never heard an Italian called Matthew.

Plenty of Michaels. What were Robin's guess, Cole Spros.

I don't know much about Cole Sprouse, so I'm not really sure. But the good news is that we're going to continue hearing Paparazza because he's moving on to the final six. And Coral and Aunt did a battle and this is probably the song that I would have saying My Way by Frank Sinatra. I didn't that was really bad, But the night I thought Aunt was better on My Way. I thought I liked her vocally better on My Way. And then the one who won the battle was Chorl and Aunt is going home. And then the final guesses again were Evan, Rachel Wood, Melby, Charlie and Aubrey O'Day and the last clue was world record. Again I knew at this point, but Aunt was revealed and is Aubrey O'Day And she went through it with the Diddy stuff.

Oh that she Yeah, she.

Was in that girl band that he put together. Oh wow, yeah, yeah, she was in She was in Danity Kane, so he put all those people together, and she was also doing she was in the documentary with the Puff Puffy documentary post so I mean, and then it kind of like all the clues kind of came together once I knew it was her. Yeah, for sure, it absolutely made sense. We unfortunately though, couldn't get Aubryo dat. I don't believe she's doing press and honestly for good reason, like good on your girl, just to kind of protect your peace and you're and you know, because listen people would ask about it, and I think that's a I think that's brave on her to go on the platform, do her thing, be amazing, inspire a lot of people, and then bow out of anything else from there, you know what I mean?

Like good, I agree, because I would take the shane away from what experience and how good she was exactly.

So instead we invited the Queen of Mass Singer, Tory Spelling on the show. She has been on four versions of The Mass Singer and we cannot wait to talk to her about her experience on the show. And of course I always have to throw in some life questions because you know, what's kind of crazy is because Tory, like I grew up watching nine O two and No, so to say, like and welcome on my friend, Tory, like my little girl heart that like had her doll. I mean I had all the dolls, did you really? Yeah? I was a huge Nino two and no fan. So the fact that it's like I had them all, like every single one of them, Donna, you know now that I'm like kind of friendly with like Jenny gar Than you know Tory, I'm like, is this cool?

What was the guy's name, Jason Priestley.

Yeah, he was Ashville. I just saw his wife at an event for a big ol hug and I'm like.

This is so cool. Looks so cool. Guy.

Yeah, he's great. Anyways, we digress. Let's get on Tori Spelling, my friend on the show. There she is and all her glory.

Now I get both of you.

Sure do?

Hi?

Alan, Hello, I'm great. How's Alexa? She hates you? Huh?

She she's not a fan of Alexi? I mean, yeah, she's not a fan of Allen.

Yeah, because I don't use it often.

I don't think that's the reason.

No, I don't think so. No, Okay, so we are so excited to have you on this week's Unmask and Unwine, because girl, you're like the queen, the actual queen of the Mass Singer, because you've done four different mass singers I have. I love that and I'm also slightly jealous because the experience that I had on the show it was the best ever. So I'm like, I feel like if they were ever to call me, I'd be like absolutely because it's so fun.

So did you know they're in like every single country and like different places in different countries, Like there's one in Spain, there's Barcelona, and there's Madrid, Like you could you could literally do mass singers all over the world.

Well, and I think what's interesting is you make a really good livelihood. Well yeah, and you were exactly and you were the you were the first season of the Mass Singer here in the US, you were the unicorn. You got obviously eliminated in a week five. But when they did. Was this show somewhere else before it came here? Or is this the I don't know the origin of the show.

The origin is it was in Japan.

Japan. That's I think, right, you're actually territory, You're you're You're right. Next time, remember my friend Julia told me about that. But so obviously you had like a somewhat of a concept, but were you hesitant to sign up for the first season here in the US.

So I did not see the news that it was, you know, originally in Japan and they redid it, reimagined it here. I had no idea what I was getting into. Like with everything in my life, I said no multiple times, and then like the third time it came back around, I was like, let me just go take a meeting with them, and they were lovely and I was like, I'm not a singer, it was and they were like, it's not about that, you know, it's just entertainment. And you're a performer, like you know, and you'll put your soul and passion into and it's just about that. And I was like, okay. So I had no idea what I was signing up for. I'm glad I was the og like the first season, because if they had called me like season two, I would never have done it because it's crazy like and then it started to trickle out. So then once I picked Unicorn, like a week before we started rehearsals or something. I remember someone they sent to me sorry. My team sent to me. Ryan Reynolds was the unicorn in the Japanese version version, and they were like is this a concern? And everyone talking They were like, no, no, no, it's fine. I mean he's saying the sun will come out tomorrow and had like a plastic unicorn mask totally different but and a good voice but whatever. So then I started to see it and I was like, oh my gosh, and I got to tell you. They didn't tell me anything. They didn't tell me who was on the panel. I didn't know who the host was. It was Nick Cannon. It wasn't until I was literally on set and I heard them announcing like we have so many people masked like grantmy award winners.

I was like what.

Academy like it was everything and I was like, oh my god. And then they're like and go.

Live right, Yeah what I'm curious, So you said something? Why do you always say no? What? First?

Well, this knew me that we've talked about in my second chapter. Now I'm starting to say yes. But before it was just the fear of failure. It was like, well if I say no, then.

Yeah.

It was performing in front of a live audience. It was singing at a young age. Someone had told me I was tone deaf, which I'm happy to report I'm not. And so it was all that combined that just kept me from reeling I can't do it. I can't do it because I didn't want to fail myself.

Right.

Do you feel like you had something you had to prove though too, because of because I imagine you had to always kind of prove yourself because your dad was the creator of nine O two and zero, and so they're probably like, oh, she just was given the show. It's like, no, you actually auditioned, and you know you didn't get the part that you actually auditioned for. Am I correct in that?

I mean, I'm putting air quotes up for those that can't see this because it's a podcast. I chose to audition because I didn't want to just be given a role. But let's face it, my dad gave me the role. But it's what I you know, in hindsight as an adult now looking back, I'm like, wow, you know what. I was given that role with a couple of lines, But I blessed you. But I went on to create a character that people loved and did really well at it, so I have to cut myself a little break. But it was from birth. It was from birth that like, oh, it's the rich girl, she's not gonna be nice. There was all those like precancy notions of what I would be, so I had to overcompensate, so I thought to be everything that they thought I wasn't and then some and so the pressure was just, oh my gosh, I could never win at anything because I put so much pressure myself to be more than expected or anything in my mind right.

And so then doing the masked singer, then that's got to feel great to have that mask on to then just be tory.

It was life changing. It was one of the best experiences in my life because there wasn't that pressure because stepping out on the onto that stage, if I didn't have the mask, immediately everyone's going to be like, okay, let's see m h. And it was cooll.

It's almost like dancing with the stars, right, because so you're so out there on dancing the Stars, people know it's you, but with this it's like they don't and you can.

It was so much better hearing the judges critiques and comments afterwards. I felt so empowered and embraced and seen yet unseen.

Yeah, why did you choose the unicorn?

So it was the first season, so they had, you know, sketches and different characters lined up, and I said to them, you know, me being me, I was like, you know, I'll do whatever you guys want. Of course, have you thought about a unicorn? And they were like, no, but we're open to that, and I said, okay, the unicorn means a lot to me. I have five kids and I'd like to show them and being where I come from that you can be magical in your own sense. You can do whatever you want to do. It's something my kids and I we always talk about the unicorn for years. It was something that transcended past what people perceived to be set views of animals. It was something that could be anything, really and I love that. And then they kind of transformed it into this unicorn like queen that they made her because they're like, you're the queen with five kids. So in my unicorn beautiful costume, they had sewed in inside all five my kids' names, and so I in the pockets so I could reach in. There was a pocket I could reach in and just touch them the whole time, if I got nervous?

Were you nervous when you were so when you said juels Joanna, because you can hear other people singing, can't you? And obviously you're yeah, by trade, you're not a singer. So were you nervous when you could hear other people's voices? And did you start to doubt yourself or were you just roll with that snowbee completely confident.

I'm so disarmed with their accent, I can't hear anything else. I'm so like, I'm blushing. Lucky girl.

I know I got really lucky, but honestly, I've been I was through the ringeratory, you know what I mean. So it's like God finally was like, let me just give you a Prince Charming with an accent, so.

You know what, she finally deserves it, Like see after all of this, Yes, okay, I was so nervous. I'm the type so when I commit to something, I full go, full force. So you know, they were like, you can do as much or as little rehearsing as you want. I was like, I'll take anything you give me. So the night before I was in there, I was in the studio like I was rehearsing, I was kept going, kept going over over. So the next day, yes, it's in your earpiece and my dressing room over it was Johnny Osmond and he was singing the Greatest Showman and I was like, screwed. Oh my god. It was like it plummeted me because I was like, I think I'm on next and.

Yeah, yeah, that's tough.

Any walk out there and they give you the countdown and it's live, and it was just like that moment where you're like, well.

Here, you're good.

You're good to the neighborhood.

Here it goes nothing. Tory, we have had so many conversations. We've had very similar relationship issues, and I'm curious from all the time and the heartache and everything you went through, is there. Where are you at with And I know you know it all ends up happening the way it happens and the timing of everything. Do you ever look back and say I wish I would have left sooner.

I mean we've discussed that and yes and no, yes, because no, I'm gonna go with no. I don't believe in regrets. I don't believe in coincidences. I believe your timing is your timing, your journeys, your journey bet are good. If I had left sooner, it wasn't the trajectory I was on. Was it was supposed to happen the way it happened. Yeah, Do I semi wish I'd loved sooner? Yeah, because you know, the kids saw a lot of stuff they shouldn't have seen, just you know, the fights, it got more. We couldn't keep it apart from them, and yeah, it was it was just toxic. But you know that was the timing that was meant to be.

I feel like, yeah, yeah, I know I often sometimes think about that, but I'll go to that same thing, that same place. You're left with no regrets by the time that you do leave because you tried so as hard as you did. It's kind of where I was sit with, you.

Know, I tried so hard. I really did. Yeah, No, explored every avenue I could until it just.

When I think, because I mean, I'm sure people ask you the same thing. Like a lot of times, most of my dms are how did you know when to leave? And you know what? You know, am I going to be okay? And you know I've I would ask those same questions to the people that walked it before me, you know, am I going to be okay? You know?

What is it?

What is it going to look like? And how do I leave? And for me, my answer is always like, you're going to know when it is time to leave, Like you, nobody can tell you the answer, and so what is it for you? When people ask that same question to you.

Everybody told me me to leave. You told me to leave, yeah, and I kept saying, you know.

No, I said leave for you. Remember, I was like, yeah, don't leave for any other thing, leave for you.

It was undeniable. The night it just all exploded, and it was you know, it all exploded. He was not sober at the time. He is now he's doing great. Proud of him. But he put up an Instagram post that the next day he took down and said, you know, he told the world like we're divorcing and give us And to me. As horrific as that was, because the older kids saw it and begged him to take it down, I thought, this is my help, this, this is it. The world knows now and they've all speculated for years. But for some reason, it gave me that courage and it was like and other things transpired that night that I couldn't turn my back to, but it was that was it, and I didn't look back. And I might have, you know, if I had left sooner when everyone said leave, leave, leave, And if I had left, maybe I would have gone back. Maybe it wouldn't have worked out. So it was my time. And I think you're right when you tell people that you will know in your heart and soul like this is it and you don't want to go waiver back and forth, not with children. So when it's right for you, that's it. That's the moment.

Yeah, And like you said, I mean, now it seems you guys are on a you know, good co parenting as good as it can be. What is the best thing that helps because right now I have seasons, you know, I've talked about this where I've up and down good seasons of co parenting. Right now we're on the downward spiral of like a bad season. Sorry, but you get it, you know. So it's like, what do you do in those moments, Like what is your best tip for keeping a co parenting situation kosher and and good? Obviously you know, we do things for the kids, but I mean when it comes to the two adults.

You know, I am not a reactive person. I think that's a good thing. So I try to anything that comes my way same way I did in our relationship. I had to often when he would say something, I would have to kind of navigate, like, Okay, how do I respond? Take a beat. He could hear it this way because his brain hears things differently than how someone in my situation hears it, So it's kind of navigating it that way. The good news is we're not in the same house anymore, so a lot of times this happens over tex so I really have a moment to sit with it and know how to respond or get in the phone on the phone with him, and it's easier than face to face and confrontation where that freaks me out. Confrontation, But it's a lot easier now that there's not that I don't want to see sexual connection, but tension that just adds the boy and the girl dynamic or the partner dynamic. That's different. It's just straight you know, parents, We take the whole other layer out and it seems to work a lot better.

Yeah, back to Massinger, who would you love? To do you still watch the show?

By the way, I go in and out.

In and out. Yeah. Is there someone that you would love to see on the show that hasn't been on yet? I mean there's been so many. Or is there a song that you'd want to like go back or like what you know? And if there's like an All Star, would you go back?

I mean noo, yeah, Oh gosh. I'm trying to remember my fourth song I was really excited about and I didn't get to it, but I'm trying to remember what it was.

I feel like you had it real easy though, because now in mass like you can't ra sing any of the songs people have sang, so like all the songs that I wanted to sing, I mean, there's a whole list of songs you're not allowed to sing. So it's like being on the first season you just had you had a whole library of songs to choose from.

This is true. I will say though, I picked my first song this is my fight song because it resonates with me and my kids. And then after that they would give me songs that they write recommended and they thought was good, you know, worked well with my voice. If I had it over again, I would have been more. I would have stuck to my guns about what meant something to me. You know. Oops, I did it again by Britney Spears. They thought it was fun and cute and like it was the Virgin from Nino Tona was singing this. It wasn't my jam. So I would go back and really try to do songs that I felt passionate about, like fight songs. I think I would have gotten further.

Yeah, I agree with that. Well, Toy, we love you. Thank you for coming on and always always good to connect.

I love you, Nice to see you, Good to see you.
