Wind Down with Jana Kramer and I'm Heeart Radio podcast.

Well, this is an exciting episode because we have two finalists from the Mass Singer season thirteen. So first up, we have the runner up, Andy Grammer, and I actually met him years ago, babe at a skating show. I doubt he's going to remember, but I'm going to bring it up to see if he does.

Sure you remember you a little useful face?

Oh stop it, what's going on? Hi, nice to see you, Jana.

This is my husband Alan, So Alan, Hey, Andy, how are you man?

Well, we'll just we'll just hop right into it. Andy. You are not going to remember this, but I remember it by one.

Hundred do you wait? It has something to do with like ice skating.

Figure skating. You really remember it. I was like, hey, he's not going to remember this, but I'm just going to say it because I'm just you know.

It was fantastic we connect. That's like one of the best parts of our job is we just could like meet people in strange, fun situations.

Why did I think that you were going to be like so big time that I'm like, he's not going to remember a little.

Oh my gosh, I wish I remember what the actual name was. I think I met Scott Hamilton as well, which is amazing figure skater.

They were all there so to take people back. So it was back in what twenty thirteen.

One hundred thousand years ago, million years ago.

I had just started. I had just been signed to Warner and Hunter Hayes was performing and we had a song that we were doing together for Footloose and they're like, you should go perform it at this skating thing. I'm like, why I used to figure skate. I mean, like Nancy Carrigan was there, and Scotty Hamilton. I used to figure skate for years.

Cool.

So I was like pinching myself so excited. And then the one and only Andy Grammer was playing out in the middle of the stage or on the on the ice, and I just remember meeting you and just and I feel like you were you were known.

But like it was I was getting started. Yeah, you were just.

Getting started, right, Yeah, fair to say that, Okay, cool? But also and then from there I was like he was the nicest dude, Like you were so kind, you were so nice, you were so humble, And from there I was like I am forever an Andy Grammar. I'm like, I love your music. I knew it was you from like the first note. I told my husband. I was like, that's Andy Grammar and I love him so much and nobody can do and I'm like, and I just like, I'm I've always been such a huge fan, like from that moment.

I don't ho if you feel the same way, because you're you're in these situations as well, Like it can be a little bit like unknown, like some people are nice, some are not super nice. I like to just try to blast open the gates and be like, oh my god, let's just be Can we just skip all that crap and just like hug each other and be grateful that we're here at the skating thing.

You know, yes, seriously, And I just I gotta say, like just watching you you explode, and I mean, wow, like this is awesome.

I appreciate.

I'm happy for you with you.

Thank you, thank you so much, so.

So so sweet, and I knew it was you. And yeah, I told my husband, and you were so good a little boogie woogie boggy wiggy.

Yeah you would a so fun.

Thank you so much. Have you done it?

I did? I did it last year.

Did you enjoy it?

It was probably the funnest thing I've ever done.

It's so fun. Yeah, it's like I'm very competitive too.

Were you so pissed you lost?

That's the best part of the whole thing is that everybody's just like having a good time, and then when they take their mask off, they're like, whoa. But it was it was really really fun and I did like, my daughters are super into it. I have a five and seven year old and so they were really and they were like learned the choreography with me, because it's like the choreography is one of the silliest parts of the whole thing, because they're like, you're in this huge thing, so you can't really do choreography, but they just give you little things to step around and then you're trying to hear your notes and it was it was It was honestly so fun. I got the call to do it. I did a one man show, which is a lot about grief, and there was like spoken with poetry and they were sharing We had all these phones in the audience and crowd members would share deep stuff together and it was like so beautiful and deep. And I was coming off of that, which was like awesome, beautiful, heavy, deep, and They're like, do you want to come do this ridiculous over the top pyro glitter.

Thing And I was like yes, yes, yes, And did you have as much fun as it looked like you were having.

It's really fun. There is something kind of crazy about people not knowing who you are, which is like fun. I don't know if you felt that too.

I mean, well, my thing was I was like, they're not going to even know who I am, so I but then when I started to kind of see people guess me, I was like, oh, okay, I'm yeah.

Someone is like I mean, the idea of being a mascot in another life, I would totally like that fits my that fits me, Like I'm remember going to like I'm a huge sports guy and like in a different universe, I would totally be the guy that would jump off the trampoline and dunk basketball like at instead of like, there's a part of me that super aligns with that.

Yeah, I love that.

Have you been asked to do the mass singer before?

I have, like a bunch of times, and for whatever reason, it just didn't feel like the right time yet. I was like, really, busy with other stuff, and this is the first time that when they asked, I was like, this actually sounds like a lot of fun right now, Like, let's go do this. And I've been guessed before, like I've had people come up to me like me and greets and be like, I know you're the whatever. You're the same way you.

Were the crazy duck crossing you like a litter duck.

Yeah, And for whatever reason, at this point, it just made a lot of sense. I the record that I have out and the the tour that I'm about to go on and in summer's called the Monster Tour, so it just kind of like linked up, like do you want to be a monster? On the Messinger, I was like, if this is all meant to be, count me up.

Did you have a say in the name or was a name gifted to youth?

They give it to you, They spend a lot of time to make something and then present it to you, And I'm like, heck, yeah, that guy looks awesome. Super yeah.

I'm just really glad they changed. So last year the first name was a Lady of the Night and I was like, hey, guys, does that sound like cool? Well, we're to anybody else was like the Lady of the Night. I was like, sodn't they changed it to Royal Night because I was like Royal Night. Yeah, I think this place it works the mom I have three kids.

Isn't it fun to be a part of. Like it's this intersection of insane quality, like the stages and all the like all the stuff they put into it, and complete absurdity. Yeah, Like, I don't know that there's another place on Earth where the amount of funds and and like set design and craziness that goes into this amount of ridiculousness. It was like a different universe for like three and a half weeks.

It was great.

And it's just incredible how they always managed to keep it a secret.

It's pretty amazing.

It really.

It's such a and everyone always says it, but it's such a well oiled machine.

It's really impressive. The most impressive thing is that my daughter's kept it a secret, Like you guys have kids.

Yeah, my daughter told her teacher and so I was like, don't like yours doesn't say anything.

I know, right, my daughter, Because today is the day that's gonna get on mask, And I was like, just one more day lou lose her name, like one more day and she's like, okay.

Were they able to come?

Yeah? They came.

Okay, we do you live in California?

Yeah? I live.

Oh well that's perfect.

Then it was perfect. They came over. They had to wear the don't talk to me sweatshirts in a little yeah, yeah, everything, and yeah, they got pretty invested. We've been watching this whole season. They really enjoy it.

So you know, when when you didn't win, was there a piece of you? I mean, obviously you're so happy for you know, to be there. But I remember even when I was ready to go home, we were about to go get married in Scotland. So I was like, I'm like, I had fun. This was this was good. But then when they do say your name, I had to like kind of choke back a little bit of like.

This is what's so funny is because it's so ridiculous. But if you are competitive and if you are like like I took it, that's the that's the funny part of this is the intersection of serious and absurd. Yeah, and so, but I took it serious and I tried hard, and you know, you keep like keep moving on, and they just give you another song. You got to like spend a lot of time getting getting it better and trying to nail it. So yes, there is and and listen, I don't care what you've just done. Once they play that music and there's like the lights that are happening, you're like, oh God, I think something really intense is about. It's about in this mask your heart starts beating you. It was really funny.

You're like, wow, is there a song that you have on an album that was maybe pushed by a label that you wish wasn't on that you don't like? Mmm, because I listened back to certain not listen back, but like when I had to, I said to play show like my first show forever, and I was like, I don't remember any of my songs, so I had to like listen back to see if I could remember the lyrics, and I remember it going, this song sucks, like why did I and I didn't like it to begin with? And why I was on there.

The There's probably a couple on my first two albums one or two where you're like, oh, I was like still learning how to co write, you know, like co writing is awesome because there's people that are amazing and often better songwriters than you. But in the beginning, you're learning how what your voice is and what you want to say. There's probably a couple on the first two, but I never want to say it's then ruined something for someone who loves it.

No, that's that's it's very true. But no, I think that's such a good point because I'm like, it wasn't I think I was trying to fit into the mold that the label wanted me. But I'm like I didn't resonate with that at all.

The hard part about art, and as you know, songwriting is like it's not like you always know, Yeah, you have to you have to take risks beyond what you what you're going is because a lot of times your gut maybe this is the wrong thing to tell herybody, but sometimes your gut is it right?

Oh.

I have songs where I left. I definitely have a song where I left and I was like, it's just too simple, it's not interesting enough. And I co wrote it, like I brought in the guitar line and I like really cared a lot about it while I was writing it, and then I left and was like, it's just not that good, and it's a song called fresh Eyes. It has like quite a bit of plays.

So I was wrong, just like a multi multi multiplatinum.

Yeah, if you're gonna be wrong for the right, then it's okay to be wrong for the the not right sometimes.

And then well, I think, because you are such a good artist to you maybe overthink it and people just like the simplicity of just a really good hook or you.

Know, yeah, those those genius and simplicity.

I find that the better songwriters are more brave with simple. We're the artist. You're like, there's nothing else, say one line and then like just that's it. And then the higher you get into higher level of songwriting rooms, they're like, yeah, I.

Think that's I think that's business in general.

There's something about it where it's even more vulnerable to just be like simple.

Yeah, yeah, it's more brief. Yeah, you get a big advocate for mental health of course. Yeah, So what kind of things do you do to make sure that your state of mind is always kind of balanced and you're in control.

I think that exercise is really important for me. And then some sort of uh, spiritual practice you try to try I try to do every morning you know whether it's like journaling, whether it's reading some spiritual text, whether it's meditating. Uh, even if it's a short, short amount and really helps set me up.

For the day.

Do you try and menditate?

Yeah, I've had like seasons where I've been really good at it. I can't say that. It's like it's kind of like fitness, right, like sometimes you're in a good zone, and other times you're not in a good zone. But especially on tour when you're in a new place every day, to just like even if I'm just like wake up and I'm in my bunk, to kind of like set myself up and realize that my thoughts are not always true and crime.

That is good.

Yeah, yeah, that's And then you're you've been married for how many years?

Thirteen?

Wow?

Crap?

Yeah?

What is your what is your key to thirteen? And where can Andy be better husband?

Oh?

My gosh, so many areas I can be a better husband. I think that I was really lucky to marry my wife Asia. And you know, it's funny because I don't know how your kids held.

Again, we've uh, he's got a seventeen year old son, and then we've together we have a seventeen month old and then we share a only and Jason, who are nine and six.

Yeah, like just start like my we're just my girls seven and five, and the seven year olds just start to ask like, so why did you marry mom? Mom?

And the.

Best answer I could give her was like, find someone that that you can share that you are not putting on for that like at it's the best, to the best of your ability. The two of you are just being yourself when you're with each other, you know, And if that actually worked, because I think the process of getting to know them and dating is so much not showing that, right you're like terrified of your your oh full circle, you're putting on a mask of sorts to like to like make sure that they like you. They'll you know. And when I'm with my wife, I'm I'm the most myself And I'd say that that sets us up, and I would hope that she feels the same way from her perspective.

Yeah, all right, I love that. That's so sweet. So you're going off you have a few days of SHNI. I saw that on her thing. So cool, so fun. She's great, my girl and z L is out there as well. That I see out there, and then what else are you going to do? Do you have a new song out? Did I? Did? I see?

I have? The record is Monster came out Earl this year, and so that tour is happening in August. Okay, we're going to go to London next week and perform in London with a full band, which is can be great and uh, it's really fun. A lot of like I got really deep into the mandolin, which I didn't see coming, and so there's like that a ton of like mandolin with trap drums and like big hooks, and it was like, it's been a really fun experience.

Well, Vanue, how are you playing in London?

Great Shepherd's Bush.

I think it's called Oh yeah, what a name?

Yeah I know right?

Oh man, Well, I mean I loved again love seeing you on the show. You were fantastic and everyone go get Monster, go to see the tour and yeah you're the best.

Thank you, thank you so much. What a lovely time chatting with you. Both appreciate it.

You're so nice to me.

I'll see you soon at some skating event.

See you there, good luck, good luck, thank you so much, thank.

You, bye bye.

So next up.

We have Brian Kelly, who was in the final four of season thirteen of The Mass Singer.

I know you know Brian quite well, don't you, babe.

Yes, him and his wife they are absolutely lovely, so so so sweet, and yeah he was. He shocked me and he is the scientist. So let's get him on. Hi, Brian, Hey, how are you good?

Good?

Oh my goodness, have you never met my husband? This is my husband Alan.

Hey man, how you doing.

I'm good. Nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you too, Brian.

First and foremost, thank you so much for coming on. I gotta tell you I I was wrong. I for some reason. Not for some reason, but I was like, convinced you were Ronnie Dunn.

Hilarious.

You can bet me it's Ronnie done it.

I saw a couple of people say that, and I was like, well, damn, that's that makes me feel good. You know, he's one of my favorite singers, one of the goats, you know. And I saw some other names thrown around, and then lately I feel like I've seen a lot of people say my name. I'm like, dang, I think they cracked the code and some you know, words gotten out or something. But Uh yeah, you know what a what a heck of an experience that was.

That was a wild ride.

It was a.

Blast, and I'm really really grateful I did it. Like it was something that came came across our plate last year at the end of the year, I thought we were done, and you know, that came in. I was like, well, we're free and talked over with my team and slept on. It was just like woke up and I'm I was like really excited. I was like, let's do this. I'm all in and it's just a cool way to you know, get my story out there, get my voice out there, and with no preconceived notions of you know, who I am or what I look like or all those things. And it was it was really freeing experience that I didn't expect.

It was awesome and what way is it freeing?

You know, just it's one of those things I think like as as an artist, you know, sometimes we can get wrapped around our thoughts too much, and you know, especially in country music, I'm probably been guilty at certain times. You know, I can only be this. This is my brand and I've got to be this, and it's you know, all that was thrown out the window, you know, singing a lot of these different songs that even if I loved them, you know, they're probably not a part of my live show, you know in a sense. And so just not caring, you know, what people think, and just enjoying the moment going out there and being competitive but having a good time.

And then nobody can see.

You, so you're just you're covered up and you're just letting it fly, you know, and so all those things. It was like a release. It was like a recalibration that happened. And I went in from that to going in to make Sunshine State of Mind, Season two, Chapter one, and it was just awesome. I don't know, it was like an unexpected, great experience that gained a lot of you know, good energy and maybe some more confidence too.

I think, Yeah, I mean, I feel like and I hope you don't. I really hope you don't take this the wrong way. I shouldn't lead with that, but here I go. Anyways, Okay, So I feel like in FGL, your voice wasn't forward as much as the other for sure, So am I correction saying that?

Yeah? Yeah?

So I was like, holy, like he can like you're an amazing singer. And then it wasn't. And I've listened, I've heard some of your new singles, stuff on solo, stuff on your own, but it wasn't really until this where I was like, this is like he's he's absolutely incredible, Like you have an amazing version. You should have never been not the front voice and that do you know? So I feel like I love I love your voice, like I love it so much, and watching this show and then now going wow, like I I mean, I can see how that might have given you that almost confidence boost to be like, look, all these people too are saying how incredible you know you are and I don't know, so I could see that being a big confidence booster.

Yeah, it was awesome, And just like you know, it's one of those things where you know, a lot of my the majority of the melodies in my music that I've put out so far, probably you know don't maybe don't reach as far note wise, or the range is a little different than you know, I swear or the Scientist you know, doing some falsetto and just just a lot of you know, there's there's a lot of intricacies that I can play with in my voice that maybe people haven't heard that maybe they've heard in the background to you know, back in the FGL days of you know, a lot of the harmonies that those are just so rangy, you know that like a third and a fifth and even down below. And so just getting to kind of exercise my voice in some different ranges that I've done before that maybe people haven't heard out front, you know in a sense.

Yeah, and you got to hide behind the scientist, do you know what I mean, Like you got to you got to play while in a way testing it, you know, you got to test the things that you didn't Yeah.

And there's really like there really wasn't any nerves in a sense of doing it, even though you're like live audience.

You know, it's going to go to TV and all those things.

But really the only thing I was really concerned about mostly was like not tripping.

I have these big big shoes on.

You know, it's like, all right, number one thing, don't fall, don't trip, and you know, we got this will be okay.

Yeah.

That was always Mike and Sell when John I was on the shore, because I knew that she could hardly see anything. Yeah, Bailey and the costume. Was that those so many different moving parts to a costume. I'm like, I just hope she doesn't fall yeh yeah, likes so difficult.

So like and how embarrassing would that be, you know what I mean, Like we're just.

It would be a meme.

It would be a Meme's like, oh, we can reshoot that, but lived somewhere.

It lives in our own brains, and that's that's that's worse.

The first episode, it was before we had figured out like this little locking system for my mask to like my back, the kind of shoulder pad thing, and so the first performance, I was a little wobbly.

I was looking back. I was a little nervous. I'm like, dang this this mask is maybe going to fall off.

Or you know, maybe I'll just you know, it ended up being fine because we figured out a system. But as you do, I mean, you've been on the show, so you know you kind of get how you get ready and you get get prepared and dressed. Like after the first maybe episode or two, it's like dialed in and it's like sick, we got it locked in and we're good.

So was Brittany there with you the entire time?

Yes, she was, yeah, we care for our little miniature docs and with us and he hung out and it was you know, I maybe some people don't know this, Maybe some do if they didn't have done like a deep dive, but I went. I finished my last two years at Belmont majored in Entertainment industry studies, so music, movies, television, and it was just, uh, it was really cool to be around that set as well, you know, like it was unbelievable to see the craftsmanship of the sets, the costumes and masks, the whole outfits, the whole production of it get done and like not long of a time, how they shoot a whole season. You know, Yeah, that was that was pretty amazing because I'm into that stuff. I love movies and music television and have been a part of some things and tried to shoot sold some shows that never got made, you know, that whole deal. But it was really cool to be around like a top top level show production and be like mind blown.

For sure, do you want to go into the acting realm of things?

Not particularly.

You're not gonna Lady Wilson and start doing acting stuff.

I would, you know, if if an opportunity came up that was a.

Cool role that was that was unique and not just you know, a guy in the dand singing at a bar like I came out of that. I wouldn't be interested in that, But to be honest with you, I'd probably be more interested kind of behind the camera, uh, producer, code directing, maybe co writing, collaboration thing.

I feel like.

It's it's I like the behind the scenes stuff, probably more than having to be you know, it's not necessarily where my passion is. I'd rather be on stage than be in front of the screen.

And as being a solo artist now give you more joy or like do what do you find it freeing in a way to be able to just kind of walk your own path without having to or is that part scary?

I enjoy it, you know.

I enjoyed being in a duo, and you know, grew up playing baseball, so I love being a team player. And at the same time, you know, it's been it's been really great being being a solo artist. I love really everything about it. It's cool being the captain of your own ship. And right now we're doing things just more recently independently, so I'm really excited about this next chapter and just having even more freedom to just kind of trailblaze my own path. I've hired kind of my whole team around me, and we're all focused on what we're doing and really building something special and trying to you know, communicate with the fans and connect with them in a different way. We built out my own app, which is pretty cool, and but.

Yeah, just trying to get just trying to get a better cadence.

That's what we've been focused on, of getting music and content out and just you know, I think part of that, to be honest with these uh you know, being on the Mask singer, I just feel like, you know, I've lived in that way of not worrying about any rules and creativity or songwriting or genres, and I feel that way even more so now. It's like if I like a song or a buddy's got a song, a collaboration, it's just like if I like it, and they're good people, they're hard workers, they want to promote it, and we want to collaborate on.

It, like let's do it, let's put it out, let's shoot a video.

When it comes to my stuff, like I'm just a big dreamer and a big schemer, and I've always got multiple projects going and trying to get one done and then I will drop that and we've got something else coming down the pipe, and just trying to keep it fun and not you know, just keep it our own, just make our own wave and just surf that thing.

You know.

Yeah, I love that.

It seems like since you've went solo, it seems like more opportunities have probably opened up for you because you've talked about you've got an app, You're doing loads of collaborations. When you're in like a duel what you would let.

You it in?

Oh what I last year on that one. But I usually can understand everything you say, Oh what you were in.

A life two people that sing together?

Okay, I do? What did I think? Jill? It's differently just it's just so is it as it being solo as I opened up more opportunities for you?

I think?

So, you know, I mean, it's it's you know, it's kind of like starting over at the same time.

But there's which is which is also a good thing.

I mean, there's there's a way to you know, creating car of your own path and kind of start start from scratch. And yeah, just being able to make everything my own, our own and my wife and I we we do everything together, and so just it's cool to you know, she's basically always around and it's a family atmosphere with our band and crew and everything, you know, everybody we're building it with on the road, and so it's just it's a good time. I mean, i'd say, I mean there's a lot of oportunities you know, back in the day as well, and there's there's more now and I think it's i'd say even more so now being independent.

I think the opportunities get almost for sure. Yeah they're not.

There's there's it's just where my team is so focused.

On us and what we're doing and not not focused on other artists, which is which is part of it, which is cool. But you know we've kind of got our heads down, our blinders on just trying to create this this movement.

Speaking of your wife, I just have to ask, because you know, I love chatting about relationships sometimes too much, but uh, what where do you exceed as a husband and then where do you go? All right? I still got to work on this. Oh He's like, I'm great.

No, I mean, she'd probably say, I don't cut my toenails.

Oh god.

I mean she expects them to be cut, like every damn night. I don't know, maybe, but.

I feel like.

Every every four or five days, we're in bed and she's like, babe, you got to.

Cut your toenails.

I'm like, I just did.

I don't think they're growing at a rapid pace, but they are.

I don't know.

Maybe the salt and the sand.

Down in Florida they grow quicker, but that would say I would say probably that.

But that's a that's an easy one to effect.

Yeah, it's a really easy one and we can fix that.

But yeah, we're going on twelve twelve years of marriage in December, so we're we're getting after it. And uh, you know, she's my best friend. We've got multiple businesses together, we've got five dogs, and we live in Florida, anchored down in Florida, and I just I love the life that we're continuing to create.

And it's just awesome, it really is.

We always try to, you know, be present and be there for each other, and sometimes it's advice back to each other. Sometimes just being an ear, you know, or a shoulder you know, what life brings. But we also we just have a good time.

I mean we we.

Try to laugh a good amount and that that happens naturally, you know, and not not to take things too too serious. You know, we take ourselves serious, but you know, we always try to have a good time, like and laugh about things. And we enjoy the simple things really too. I mean we love being home and kicking it with our dogs, cooking dinner and fishing and yeah to Georgia at her family farm and hunting some and uh, you know, as much as we love you know, touring and traveling, we're also you know, equally kind of as homebodies.

You know.

We've we love love our little spot on the lake and and just some days we don't even leave leave the property, you know, just stalk up on groceries and stuff and literally not even leave and just kind of you know, chill.

I love. I think there said there's something to be said for couples because I feel like Alan they are the same way. Where it's like we when you can be around each other for a long extended and you enjoy that time, like that's like you're hanging with your best friend, you know, And that's right.
