Nisha is a breast cancer survivor diagnosed with HER2‑positive breast cancer, a fast‑growing and invasive form of the disease, in 2022 at the age of 42. She underwent surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and a year of targeted therapy while raising three school‑aged children, including a medically fragile daughter with a complex heart condition who became a steady source of courage throughout her treatment. As a longtime journalist, Nisha often shares her story on social media to offer grounded guidance to others walking their own breast cancer journey. She was inspired by both her daughter’s medical journey and her own to write two children’s books shaped by the belief that sharing our hardships can help others feel less alone. Today, Nisha honors her survivorship through daily movement including long walks during her kids' sports practices, active volunteer work in the breast cancer community and spending as much time as she can with her family, who were a constant support during her breast cancer treatment.
In the pursuit of our goals, we’ve helped fuel research, unlocking the biology of breast cancer and discovering insights that propel us toward more effective risk reduction strategies, earlier detection methods and innovative treatments. This has helped reduce the breast cancer mortality rate by 44% since 1989.
To date, we’ve invested nearly $3.6 billion in groundbreaking research, community health outreach, advocacy and programs in more than 60 countries. Over the past 30 years, 29 new breast cancer-fighting drugs were made possible in part due to Komen research funding.
We stand firm in our promise to never give up on our vision of creating a world without breast cancer.
