Meat exports to the U.A.E stalled over Halal certification

Meat exports to the United Arab Emirates have been stalled for a month, after the body that certifies most New Zealand plants as halal lost its accreditation.

The Emirati Government did not renew the New Zealand Islamic Development Trust’s registration, which was cancelled on the twenty-fourth of September. The market was worth sixty million dollars last year, the second biggest in the Gulf after Saudi Arabia.

Only product already certified and on the water was allowed through. Everything made or stored since has been stuck.

Two other certifiers are approved there, but neither covers many plants here. The Meat Industry Association is understood to be fast-tracking contracts, hoping to restore certification before the new season ramps up. Exporters are bracing for higher costs in the meantime.

Applications are open for the Meat Industry Association’s 2027 scholarships, with students having until the 26th of November to apply.

The association offers five thousand dollars for undergraduates and ten thousand dollars for postgraduate students studying subjects relevant to red meat processing, who plan a career in the sector.

Chief Executive Nick Beeby says it’s an exciting time to build a career in red meat, with exports going to more than one hundred markets and the sector supporting one in twenty jobs across the country.

Beeby says many different subjects can be a starting point, from commerce and food science to law, agribusiness and supply chain management. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents studying at a tertiary institution.

A North Otago shearer has been sentenced to two months’ home detention for abusing seven lambs while shearing them.

Damian Walter David Fraser, thirty-seven, pleaded guilty in the Oamaru District Court to seven charges of ill-treatment of sheep under the Animal Welfare Act. Video footage showed him deliberately striking and stomping on lambs, and dropping one on its head.

The Ministry for Primary Industries’ regional manager investigations Central and South, Gerry Anderson, says its team spent thousands of hours studying footage of shearing operations to identify Fraser.

The case stems from five hundred and sixty hours of footage supplied by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and sparked a nationwide investigation of shearing practices. It’s the second prosecution, with another shearer already sentenced and two more still before the court.

Peter Templeton, a 2024 Nuffield New Zealand Scholar and Southland dairy farmer, set out to explore how farm ownership and succession could become more achievable for the next generation. Having navigated his own pathway into partial ownership of his family farm by his early 30s, he knows how uncommon that is—and wants to see more young farmers supported to do the same.

His report investigates alternative ownership models including vendor finance, equity partnerships, lease-to-buy arrangements, and sharefarming. Peter sees potential for a standardised, government-backed lease-to-buy agreement—modelled on the 50:50 sharemilking contract—to offer a fair and practical framework for new entrants.

Travelling through the UK, Netherlands, and South America, he found countries facing similar challenges around land access and generational transfer. From Dutch farmers raising capital via crowdfunding to long-term tenancy models in the UK, Peter’s research showed that enabling structures do exist—New Zealand just needs to adapt them to local conditions.

He also explores the psychological side of succession. Older generations, shaped by disruptive events like New Zealand’s 1980s economic reforms or the UK’s foot-and-mouth outbreak, are often cautious about risk and reluctant to relinquish control. Peter emphasises the value of early conversations, transparency, and external facilitation to support smoother transitions.

Domestically, he proposes several practical measures—from unlocking KiwiSaver to support on-farm housing, to easing access to finance and developing a national platform that connects retiring farmers without successors to young, motivated operators. He also sees a need for a more flexible farm real estate system—one that allows staged transitions, not just all-or-nothing sales.

Peter argues that creating more accessible pathways into farm ownership is essential to retaining talent in the primary sector. He believes many young farmers are ready and capable—what they need are tools, connections, and policy frameworks that lower the barriers to entry.

She argues New Zealand could replace imports and generate new value from re-wetted peatland.

Smith is also advancing research at home, partnering with Manaaki Whenua and NZAGRC to install flux towers that measure real-time greenhouse gas emissions from various land uses, including dairy, cropping, and blueberries. This data is essential to inform decisions and track climate outcomes.

Drawing from global examples—including agribusiness in Brazil and innovation-driven economies in Europe—he advocates expanding New Zealand’s economic base by developing new industries and adding value closer to market. Carlos stresses the importance of building a more resilient economy by creating new “pillars” alongside agriculture and tourism, which have historically underpinned the country’s prosperity.

Carlos stresses the importance of building a more resilient economy by creating new &ldquo;pillars&rdquo; alongside agriculture and tourism, which have historically underpinned the country&rsquo;s prosperity.
His Nuffield journey broadened his outlook beyond farming, exposing him to diverse political, cultural, and environmental contexts worldwide. A memorable experience in Zimbabwe, assisting with wildlife conservation, deepened his appreciation of how economic and ecological systems intertwine.
Carlos encourages a national conversation about New Zealand&rsquo;s direction over the next 25 to 50 years, calling for bold, collaborative thinking across sectors. He sees his role as igniting discussion&mdash;from media to everyday conversations&mdash;around the country&rsquo;s identity and future opportunities. We need to bring farmers to the table and take them off the menu, when it comes to fostering sustainable practices in the agriculture sector. 2023 Nuffield Scholar Kylie Leonard says trailing environmentally focused practices must be voluntary to succeed. 

Having spent time overseas for this report, she says the best uptake she’s witnessed is where farmers have had the choice to change, and lead by example within their community. Regulations drive the lowest common denominator behaviour, she says. 

Backing farmers so they don’t get burdened with the capital risk of trialing sustainable practices, and resourcing them as needed, is vital.
