Fewer South Africans choosing customary marriage: how to choose the right marital contract for you and your partner

View descriptionShare

For many people, love leads to marriage. But not nearly as many as before, because new data from Stats SA has revealed that South Africans are less interested in tying the knot than they used to be. The most common form of union in the country is civil marriages, which totalled 97 510 in 2024. 2 634 customary marriages and 2 229 civil unions were also registered that year. We are in conversation with Legal advisor and Direct at Mokgehle Mohlala attorneys,  Mpho Mokgehle on the decline in customary marriage and how those thinking about getting married can protect themselves before tying the knot.
