On this episode of College Football Apostles, George Wrighster and Ralph Amsden get into a fascinating "Coach Prime Effect" Coaching Carousel that saw both Mike Vick get hired at Norfolk State, and DeSean Jackson get the head coaching job at Delaware State.
The guys also go through some of the big-name transfer portal quarterbacks, and the sometimes surprising destinations they committed to- like Air Noland going from Ohio State to South Carolina, or Mikey Keene going from Fresno State to Michigan.
Wisconsin is making news for not letting Xavier Lucas into the transfer portal, and it's assumed that Luke Fickell and company believe Miami tampered. George gives his take on the state of "tampering" in 2024, and who is in the wrong.
George also has a problem with all the bellyaching about Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia getting a temporary win in his lawsuit to keep JuCo players eligible.
Finally, the guys talk about the current list of assistant coaches making over $2 million dollars, and whether that investment has been worth it.
I'm George Reister, He's Ralph Amson, and this is the college Football Apostles, and we got to talk about this head coaching carousel that's going on. Not all the big ones that you're probably thinking about, but how did Michael Vick and DeShawn Jackson end up at Norfolk State and Delaware State? And is this going to be a trend for NFL players with no coaching experience getting coaching jobs, and maybe enough like your boy Dion Sanders.
Hey, I might be next, who knows.
We also got to talk about junior college players because this has been a big discussion.
Oh my god, they're gonna stash them.
Chill man, It's not gonna happen the way that you think it's gonna happen. We got to talk about the transfer portal because the quarterbacks have been moving all over the place. Some people that we thought committed to places really actually didn't sign the paperwork yet, so we got to find out what's going on there. We're gonna talk about some assistant coach salaries, and we got to talk about the People's Championship at least to Jake Rattler, and that and so much more here on the college Football Apostles, and we thank you for your time, We thank you for your energy, because your time's the most valuable thing that you have. And you can always hit us up at George Reister at Ralph amasdon at Unafraid Show. Make sure that you guys leave a comment, share with a friend and everything else.
All right, Ralph, we will get started.
So it first was talked about about Michael Vick getting the head coaching job at Norfolk State, and then he was interviewed at Sacramento State and there was like, oh my gosh, which one is he gonna go to Sacramento State. That's fifty million dollars in NIOW money allegedly, and then there was fights about that. But he ended up going to Norfolk State, and he's at least got connections to Virginia and they're trying to make a big splash. I'm not mad at that higher But then the DeShawn Jackson to Delaware State, that will perplex me a little bit because I don't understand this is a kid from Long Beach, California. Yes, he's played in Philly, he's played and where else has he played at? He's playing a bunch of different places, but the Delaware State went. I don't understand, but this has been clearly becoming a trend. We got Deon Sanders at Jackson State, then we had Eddie George at Tennessee State.
Who he'll be.
He'll get another He'll get a big time head coaching job, probably like a FBS head coaching job in the next cycle, because you haven't really had that any fires this time. And then you got now Vic and Deshon thoughts.
I don't know, I don't know what. So the Delaware State thing is wild to me. Deshaun Jackson one of the best college football players I've ever seen live in my entire life. He was electric. He probably still could could get fifty yards receiving. Throw him out in any NFL game this weekend, like he could still play, right.
Because he's still asked as hell.
Yeah, and he's taken a MEAC head coaching job, which is wild in it of itself, because I mean there's like, you know, he could have been like a Robert Morris because he played in Pennsylvania maybe, or I think wasn't he He was with Washington for a while. Yeah, and I think Howard is in this conference. But no, he goes with Delaware states. I know Delaware for three reasons. It's referenced in Wayne's World. It's where most companies are registered, and Joe Biden lived there for a while. I don't know. I think I know the last two. Yeah, that's that's it. We gotta go. You ever have you watched Wayne's World?
It was so long ago. The only thing I remember from it is Wayne's World Party time excellent.
That's all I know.
So the reference they make to Delaware, and so they get a green screen and the green screen can take them anywhere. It's like early green screen technology. So they have a background and it's Texas and it's like, how do y'all let's raise and rope broncos. So then they get him a backdrop it says welcome to Delaware and they just say, Hi, we're in Delaware. They don't know anything about it, and like that's that's a point for me. I don't know anything about it. Wasn't Joe Flacco at one of those schools. For a minute, Delaware went to Delaware? You are one not Delaware state?
Delaware?
Yes, okay, I don't think he would have met all the qualifications to become Delaware State's quarterback.
So one and eleven last year. So it's like one of those things where I get try anything works right, it can't.
It can't get worse.
And they got man. They yeah, it's the schools that they're with are all pretty well known HBCUs, like South Carolina State, North Carolina Central, and then he's gonna be in the same side of the conference, Norfolk State. So you're gonna have Michael Vick coaching against the Shan Jackson And you.
Want to talk about this for a second, I just want to know where DeShawn Jackson met somebody that where they were like, oh yeah, Like what circles was he running in to where that job came open and he was like yeah I want that or somebody, or like when did he mention to somebody I would like to coach, because you don't just stumble upon that type of job. Yes, And that's that's question, is where and when was he conversating with somebody.
Now, now here's the thing.
If I had to bet my money which coach would be successful, I'll go with Michael Vick over DeShawn Jackson if I have to choose. Right, here's what I know about Michael Vick. Number One, Michael Vick's older, he has been settled in his life. He's got business ventures going. And the thing that I like most about Michael Vick is when he got out of jail for dog fighting, he could have when he went through his bankruptcy proceedings, he could have gotten debt canceled out, but instead he paid everybody back. That lets me know that somebody is literally contrite and really trying to change their their life because they're like, I'm not gonna take the easy route. I'm actually gonna go down the hard road here. And that required budgeting, that required you know, may have things may have been leaner than he would have liked at times, And that leads me to believe that that's a man who can handle whatever shoe string budget he's going to be dealing with at Norfolk State. That he's been down to the trenches, he's been in jail, he's had he's had tough times. So kids that are from you know, like Newport News and other areas that they're going to be pulling from, he'll be able to connect with them in a way like.
A human level.
Right Yeah, now, Dashawn Jackson. Right, he was just he's just been doing the podcast with Shady Right with Shady McCoy. They have been reckless at times on their podcast.
Yes, they like the whole.
The Kimba Mutumbo story, the whole, like all sorts of stuff. This leads me to believe that Dashawn Jackson, even though he's a cool dude, know him loosely, I'm not hiring him as my head coach.
I gotta be honest.
It's it's like he's not gonna be able to instill the type of discipline and.
You know, and just stuffed into.
The kids, like he'll be able to talk to them about it, but he'll live that on a day in and day out basis you hear me?
Right?
Not that we know of, you know, definitely not that we know of. And man, I've gone through every single administrator that works for Delaware State, from doctor Alisha Shields Gadson to Tianna Sephers, the like admin assistant for football. I mean, I can't find a single connection. I want to know, I really want to know. I'm like, who Deshaun Jackson's agent, How this comes across his desk?
Not even he came across the agent's desk. I think it was I don't know here. I don't know either. It came across the agent's desk.
And some other people said no, and then they were like, hey, DeShawn.
What do you what do you think? He was like, effort, yolo, let's go. Now.
Here's the thing that DeShawn will be able to do, just like Michael Vick.
They will be able to staff up.
And teach people how to play football the right way that both of them will be able to do.
So.
I have no doubt about that part about the football process. It's just a matter of I don't know.
Michael.
Michael Vick just feels like a better leader to me in this situation, even though I do hope they both succeed well.
Is it more indicative of just the current media landscape right because like your guy Doug Gottlieb, he's got a show and coaching basketball. Mike Vick's probably gonna leave the desk to go full time. But I don't know if DeShawn Jackson's gonna stop podcasting with Shady or no, or.
Because Dion can do it. Because Dion can do it. But but if you notice he toned things back for a while all the extra curricular stuff, and then went back forward once he got stable.
I well, are you gonna be watching? Because I think that that's at the very minimum. I don't know if people are trying to capture the lightning in the bottle of the don thing, because there's only one d on. Mike Vick is in that upper echelon of all time athletes like not maybe not you know, super Bowl wins, on field performance, but he's in the Bo Jackson stratosphere of like what.
If Michael Vick's energy now feels like unk? And that's what a head coach should be. It should feel like unk. For the most part is that the players are gonna look at Vic and you're gonna have some people, some younger.
Guys who are gonna be like, They're gonna be like, yo.
I heard coach was good, and they're gonna look look at the video and be liked, coach was for real. They're gonna play for real and so you so you know what this means. So Vic has his own shoe, Yeah, Vic makes it to the FBS, it will be like Dion, His shoes will be retro. I'm telling you that right now. Because he's popular enough and can bring enough pop culture attention to it that even though that people are gonna hate him steal because there's still a great portion of people that hate Michael Vick, but he's done so much on and off the field that I think that you're gonna have FBS programs if he's able to have success there that are gonna say, listen, listen, man, like, how long do we go keep punishing this dude for this? Look at all the great things that he's doing.
Yeah, and I people have the right to not forgive in their own personal life. They absolutely have that right. But I think we should all recognize that the point of the justice system, the point not what it actually accomplishes, but the point is rehabilitation right to help people get their lives together. We celebrate that in this country on some level. But I look at Mike Vick and I say, like, oh, here's a guy who was always the leader, whether it was of his idiot friends, his football team, or whatever else that he has going on. I see him naturally stepping into a into a coaching role. You know, DeShawn Jackson was the wide kind of the wild card, and maybe he I always thought he actually like did a pretty good job of just putting his head down and playing football as far as like evil wide receivers go. But he he always had a little bit of an edge to him and the way he talked and the way he aired things out. And so that'll just be interesting because you need that edge when you're dealing with the media. But what media is he going to be dealing with at Delaware State? So it's really just gonna come down to can he improve a one and eleven football team?
Yep one.
Speaking of improving teams though the transfer portal, everybody's trying to improve their team right now through the transfer portal.
The question is who really has done it?
And you've actually had some big name quarterbacks hop into portal and the guy Numero Uno, who I would have sold my stock for, I'd sell my bitcoin to get this kid is a Jeometerier quarterback from Washington State. And now for back to back years, their quarterbacks from Washington State have been the top one two guys in the portal this year number one, last last year one two, depending on Dylan Gabriel where you put him or whatever you know. So but this year though Jeometerier number one, Washington State to Oklahoma. You got Luke Crowing Crohnhook from Florida State, He's going to Mississippi State. Fernando Mendoza from cal to Indiana. I actually thought he might have headed down to Miami to head back back home. Thought that could have been an interesting So Miami hasn't found their quarterback yet. Malik Murphy is supposedly committed to Oregon State, but I don't know if he signed his papers yet. Connor Weekman from Texas A and M to Houston, Miller Moss USC to Louisville, Darien Mensa from Tulane to Duke replacing Malik Murphy.
Too. Yeah, that was a fast one. Malik Murphy said he's going in the portal and they had Darien Mensa signed like forty eight hours later.
Yeah. Yeah, they were like Jackson Arnold.
Old Oklahoma to Auburn, Walker White still looking for a spot. Air Nolan is still looking for a spot.
Nolan Nolan. Air Nolan picked a spot and it's going to blow your mind. Where South Carolina?
Oh, yes, he did go to South Carolina. Yeah, I'm sitting here looking at it right right now.
Yes, Like Lenora Seller's a freshman, So why did he stay at Ohio State? I don't know. I don't know. And I also don't know if Aaron Nolan is sticking around for the playoff, because Devin Brown is sticking around for the playoff. That's why he hasn't entertained any end an.
Out publicly. Yeah.
So, oh that was gonna be interesting. Yeah, because Sellers is a freshman, so he's got two more years left. Wait, is he a red shirt freshman or he's a true freshman.
I think he's a red shirt freshman.
Yeah, so he might have one more year left.
That's just that's an interesting one to me because Aaron Nolan was hyped up as like a potential first round pick.
Yeah, but saying is in front of him on the depth chart right now, and he was like, I'm not playing around with this in the offseason.
Yeah, who knows.
And maybe Ohio State is going to be back in the portal for a quarterback and he's like, bro, if they're just gonna portal every year, them out here, and that's.
How every quarterback should be thinking. Yep, every quarterback. If you're a four star and you and Marshall offers you and you see a path the plane right away.
Go yes, take that, Yep, you will be better off.
Cadence Salter big Well, Okay, so well, let let's talk about that for a second, because I do believe it's important for people to understand this.
At the quarterback position.
If you are a freshman, you go to a school, let's say you play really well in practice, right, and they're excited about it. Like let's say Jackson Arnold at Oklahoma, Dylan Gabriel walks. They're happy, They're like, cool, we got we got Jackson Arnold.
We're fine. Right.
In hindsight, they should have kept Dylan Gabriel one. And if Dylan Gabriel wanted to leave, then the answer was to find another transfer portal quarterback. So here's the dilimmer that the highest of highest level teams have. This is not the same dilemma that Tulane has, or Memphis or you know, or Washington State even or Oregon State. This is not their dilemma. This is the dilemma of the people who are of the five five to seven million in up jobs, which is when now every year and if you are and I was looking at this, and I'll use Oregon for an example. Right, So this upcoming year, Dylan Gabriel is going to be gone, Dante more likely will be the quarterback. Okay, they do have another capable kid on the on the roster in Novasad who I believe if he were to start it for next year, Iba, okay with it, but he ain't play no football, so right, and Dante Moore has a little bit, So I believe what's going to happen is Nova said it's gonna hop into portal. Okay, then you got Dante more for this year. If he plays really well. The kid, his talent is insane. If he plays well, there's a chance that he could be a top ten pick next year, which means he may go out in the draft.
So let's say he goes.
Out in the draft, Oregon would then be left with the jayskid that just signed from Hawaii. Yeah, the Jay skid that just signed from Hawaii to five star kid Achilles Smith Junior. And that's it because there's another player on the roster that's never going to play there. So you're essentially left with those two guys plus whoever you recruit in the next high school class. So that that's going to leave you three quarterbacks, two red shirt freshmens, have true freshmen, and are you going to bet bet the house if you're Dan landing on somebody who hasn't played.
Or let's say another Dylan Gabriel comes into portal.
Do you chance your chance with a true freshman, no matter how good you think he is, or do you go with a proven commodity that hopped into portal And it's like calling you too, like, yo, I want to come here.
Yeah, that's a great point. That's a great point.
And Oregon is facing this situation.
I'm using them as an example because I know the roster really really well and understand you know, but but this is not the only program that's doing this. So for the last couple of years, they have recruited high level wide receivers okay, like in terms of ranked high coming out of high school, and they're getting in IL money all.
Of this stuff.
So Trey Shawn Holden and Taz Johnson are gonna be gone for sure. Evan Stewart may or may not. Let's say Evan Stewart come comes back.
You need at least.
Four good wide receivers, okay, at least four. So for oregetting the question is you got like eight sitting on the bench right now, Okay, that are freshmen and true freshmen, hey.
That you think very highly of.
So some of these big name wide receivers who've hopped into portal, do you go get them? Or do you say, we got all these dudes on the on the payroll and we gotta let them play some damn football and see what they got.
I would try to develop the kids that you have in house. Unless it's a unless it's a guarantee production elsewhere, doesn't mean that you're gonna get it as well.
Correct, correct, So I don't know, but what is that?
Yeah, but there are certain guys who are just stamped and you know what they are like it. It's like Buddy who came from like the bullet in the cough winner. He hops into portal and it's like, Yo, Dan, I want to go to Oregon, coach Coach Lanning, I want to go to go to Oregon.
M hm. Let's say Nash.
From from from Fresno, I mean from San San Jose State. I'm not sure if he has any eligibility left, but let's say who led the country in UH yards, receptions and touchdowns. He hops in the portal and he calls it. It's like Dan Lanning, I want to come up there.
Then you gotta. Then you then that's a thing where you probably got to bring him in. He's going to the NFL. But in that situation, yes, yeah, But what I'm saying though, no, I I get it. And you also got to be looking at your bench full of wide receivers and say like, well, they they could leave at any time anyway, because that's what any anybody else anywhere else is doing. It's tough decisions. But my question for you is this, what are the three quarterback transfers that you are most intrigued by so far? You give me yours, I'll give you mine.
Okay, I'm gonna go with number one, my faith John Mattier to Oklahoma because that's they got a bunch of dudes in the portal. I'm not sure I understand what's going on there. It feels a little confusing, but whatever, right, let's go with.
Next.
I'm gonna go with Caden Salter to Colorado. That is up there for me, because you're gonna hand the keys allegedly to Julian Lewis, but they didn't bring Caden Salter in without Juju knowing and his family understanding, it.
Would have to be a competition. I don't understand why Caden Salter would go to Colorado. He's already gone to a New Year six Bowl game with Liberty. He was one of the better power You're saying stay at Liberty. No, I'm not saying State Liberty. I'm saying, would you really? Would he really have picked a school where the freshman is guaranteed to start?
Yeah, So that's what I'm saying is that that comes a little bit of a tricky situation situation. And lastly, because you asked for three justin Martin to Maryland from you as from U. C.
L A.
That's just a personal one that I'm excited about. But I'm also so who are your three? Because I know too that you're.
Gonna name well, Mike's gonna name them mikey Keene of Michigan is why. Because not a lot of people know this, but but when Oregon decided that like the future, was Dylan Gabriel on that runner up list was mikey Keane.
Yeah, mikey Keane is He's gonna have Michigan much better next year. But there's a lot of people that are then gonna be pushing for Bryce Underwood to start getting that nil money.
Yeah, and so that that that's a really really interesting one for me because he is very solid. You know, this is somebody who he never lost.
The a move, bro, that's literally like an NBA move, Like like you're gonna pay Joe L ANDB for two years to sit on the bench because he's because he's hurt, except for Bryce isn't hurt obviously.
But I'm just saying.
Right, right, And I don't think Bryce Underwood's gonna be scared of Mikey Kan. I don't think anybody who sees Mikey Kean who lays eyes on mike Y Kean is scared of him.
No, until they seem to him throw the ball and run. Boy, I like it.
He shut out as u at Asu last year. He never has lost a game in the state of Arizona in his life because he never lost in high school. So that's a fascinating one for me because Michigan obviously national champion just one year ago, and for them to be betting on on this kid, this shorter quarterback, fascinating to me that that that was a really really big one.
Dylan Dylan Gabriel has been making making short kings cool.
Yeah, yeah, I am Kyler. Well, I don't know about Kyler, but uh, I would say that. Another one of mine that is super super interesting is Luke Cromin hook to play for Jeff Levy because Florida State fans are so mad about this transfer. They're pissed, and I don't understand why they're so upset. Do you know what they they They're drowning in nil money potential quarterback commits. I don't think they're gonna miss this kid at all. It's not like he did much this year anyway.
Yeah, I would totally agree, and they get so. I thought you were gonna name the kid that came into Florida State Thomas Cassianos.
Well, yeah, because because there's a lot of Florida State people who don't know what to think. A lot of Florida State people are Bobby Bowden people, and the idea of somebody quitting on their football team to come be your starter is really hard for them to digest. I love Thomas Casianas. It'd be very funny for me to do like an all former UCF quarterback list of three because Castianos and mikey Kean were teammates in Orlando. But yeah, no, I think that. I think the Casianos thing is fascinating, but the croman Hook one just because Florida State fans were so upset, and I do think Jeff Levy's gonna get that offense going. I don't know Ifsissippi State's ever gonna be good, but we'll find out if Luke croman Hook is actually a good quarterback under Jeff Levy. I believe that one miss million percent. And then you and then you, you brought up you, you brought up the whole Duke situation. So I'm not gonna double down on that. But I do want to declare a winner because before this season started, on this podcast, we said we're gonna know the ultimate winner between Dion Sanders and his former offensive coordinator who he removed duties from and then took a head coaching job.
Because he lost his recruit, Danny O'Neill.
Yes, yeah, so that that was the one that I wanted to bring up, was Danny O'Neill. Danny O'Neill decommitted from Colorado to follow his head coach to San Diego State. One year later he's going to Wisconsin.
Yep.
That to me is that that's the fine, because San Diego State wasn't good this year. Obviously, Colorado was nine and three or whatever, and so I think that maybe we're going multi rounds on this. Maybe we'll see what Sanda Yego State's doing in two three years. But round one Colorado like with a knockdown ten eight, ten to seven. Baby, dude.
There's a lot of guys as I get down further into this transfer portal list, the one I'm most intrigued by because this kid has been at like eighteen different schools already, and I'm not joking, is TJ Finley?
Yeah, how does he have eligibility left?
He that's NBA. You're talking about like a three and D wing sign of one year deals like Trevor or Reza or something.
So he's been at oh my god, let's see all twenty six. So he started at LSU, he enrolled at LSU, then he went to Auburn. He played at Auburn, then he went to Texas State, hopped in the portal, went to Western Kentucky, hopped in the Portal. Now he's at Tulane and so that one is interesting. I want to see where j Warner goes Kurt Water soon because he's.
He's been it's been good.
Like I'm actually surprised that he hasn't found a home yet.
Cool on this list that is homeless, would you take as like a backup next year to Dante More that you know isn't going to play over him, but is older and has experience because for me, I.
Think Sam was that Utah last year. Yeah, yeah, school, she's a wheeze, all right. I would probably say, let's say, hm hmm. You know who I think is an intriguing pick up that I don't think anybody that if you're picking him to be a quarterback, I think it's a foolish move. But the kid is a crazy talent. Is alex Orgy?
Yeah, I see what you're saying.
It edits him to.
Play running back or play anything else. You might have something extremely special.
Yeah, and I we've Arizona State has Jeff Simms, and I kind of look at Jeff Sims and alex Orgy the same in that if you need them to come in and run out of specific packages, they can but I'll give you one. I'll give I'll give you an interesting backup to Dante Moore, and you let me know what you think of this. Bring home ty Thompson at this point, he's got to know. No, he said, no.
I just saw the kid in the bowl game. Man, he was terrible.
I was like, oh my god, dude, you can't hop into Portland go play like this like that, like this was an opportunity and it did not go well. So, oh, do you know how I would take I would take Ashton Daniels. That's who I would take. Oh he's not he's not homeless anymore anyway.
Yeah, he's gonna go battle with the He's gonna go battle with Jackson Arnold. They got two running quarterbacks. I really want to know what he freezes thinking. Here he got this.
There's a lot of kids in this twenty twenty four class that I was watching that I was not real excited about it.
Who were ranked above Damon?
And I was like, oh, oh, you're you're in the portal already.
This is very interesting. M I'll take Nate Yarnell.
Then, Okay, if you're gonna make me take anybody, of course you will.
Of course you will. You know, he's like six seven, you like those giants?
No, no, no, no, I don't.
I don't like him over six six if I'm being honest, because he's the biggest. He's listed at six to six. Okay, so let's hope he's six to six. If you're any taller than six six, you can't play quarterback for me. If you're six foot seven on the if you hit six foot seven, you gotta hop into portal.
Did you ever give that take to your your Jacksonville tight end teammate.
He was only six to six. Yeah, yeah, he was only sixty six, all right.
But speaking of the portal though, uh, there's a player named Xavier Lucas who is in the well who's attempting to get in the transfer a portal now because uh, he signed his letter of intent and now he wants out and there are people that are blocking his transfer. And you can read his tweet, Ralph.
Yeah, so Xavier Lucas he played at Wisconsin last year's from South Florida. He was like one of their highest rated defensive players last year. It didn't seem like he was gonna go into the portal like so many Wisconsin players have, But on December nineteenth, he announced that he was going into the portal. Here we are eight days later and he is not actually in the portal, And this is his tweet from earlier today, December twenty seventh. I still intend to transfer, but at the moment, Wisconsin is refusing to release me into the transfer portal. I've met all NCAA requirements of the transfer portal process. I've yet to be put into the transfer portal by Wisconsin, which is impeding my ability to speak with schools. He didn't say stopping completely. He said he is impeding his ability to legally speak with schools because Wisconsin is granted every other portal request except for this bro.
That's nasty.
That is nasty, and speaking of bad karma, I know why Lincoln Riley's not having success. I just thought about that when you just brought that up. Do you remember when the kid wanted to transfer to TCU from Oklahoma and he blocked him?
Yeah, I remember when that was common practice, blocking specific destinations.
State into UCLA's quarterback when he wanted to come down.
That's right, and that's right, and man.
And that coach ends up getting fired. Program falls in shambles for a minute. Hey listen, no good, no bad deed goes unpunished, and and uh so so yeah, so I think that that might be a little bit of Lincoln Riley Carmel. How long will it will it last? Who knows?
And this time you.
Think Luke Fickle's in the wrong for this, then.
Yes, now I do believe that I would probably talk to the kid on some level and be like, all right, look, look, man, we know that this is not about you.
If we're being honest that.
Well, we have revealed why we haven't revealed the rumor on why they won't let him go.
Okay, go ahead and tell what the rumor is.
Because because everyone thinks that the moment that he's allowed in the portal, he'll commit to Miami, which means he must know something, which means he must have had a conversation. So it's tamp it's tampering. It's the third year old Miami has been accused of tampering West Virginia twenty twenty two, twenty twenty three, Oklahoma State big time.
And of course they've been tampering.
This is literally what they do, and it's not just just them, So don't think I'm just attacking Miami.
It's the reality.
My Miami comes and says, all right, bro, look we got a boat load of money for you.
Are you Are you coming or are you not? Oh? No?
Okay, well then well then up that by multiply that times three. Now what do you think I'm still not coming? Listen, bro, you gonna come five times?
Well, I'm too immature right now. I just got immature on myself. I was like, oh, don't.
Do that, George, you and full Alex Jones, that's gonna get clipped for sure.
Uh, I'm letting the kid go if you don't me here.
We're not fighting to keep you.
I don't understand why why anybody would be sitting there trying to keep somebody who don't want to be there. So maybe they're trying to expose with that. Wisconsin and Luke Fickel are trying to expose Miami. So maybe I tell the kid like, hey, yo, bro, my Miami tampered a bit bit too much here. You're gonna have to find somewhere else and we will let you go, but we are going to expose Miami on this. So I'm sorry that you got to beat a guy. But that's what it what it is like. If that's how strongly I felt about it, That's what I would do if I was the head coach.
Yeah, and I mean people tamper It is what it is. Miami got tampered with, definitely, probably by the whole Isaiah Bond to Alabama thing. Yes, Like how did how did on three have a have a prediction to Alabama thirty minutes after and like all three also has uh they have Xavier Lucas predicted to Miami even though he's not in the portal, like we know, we know. I've you've seen players get tampered with directly. I've tried. I've had parents try to use me as an avenue for tampering. Yeah, hey, can you put the word out that we're thinking about getting in the portal and pass my number along to anybody who might want me to get into the portal. I've had parents reach out to me and ask for that. We Arizona State lost the offensive Linemen to Michigan while they were under investigation for the Connor Stallions thing because they called the kid and said, you have a home here, hey, man, Like, it's just it's just what it is like it it. I don't know how to fix it at this point, but it's very very funny that like that, that Xavier Lucas is going to be the one to have Miami be made an example of. I don't know if it's gonna work. I don't know if they're going to keep him from I don't can you how could you keep him from Miami unless you know for sure if you hold him back for long enough, Miami might have to fill that spot and give up. That's their only.
Yeah, but then you're screwing the kid, and I don't like that either.
Have you ever do you know the like, uh, the shel Silverstein books where the sidewalk ends and stuff like that, Yeah, falling up. There's in one of those books, there's a little poem called the Prayer of the Selfish Child? Have you ever heard that?
Yes? Yeah? Yeah. Now I've laid me down.
To sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to take and if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my toys to break.
So none of the other kids can play with them. Yep, that's yeah. So I think that's where we're at with Luke Fickle right now. Is like Okay, Miami, you can't. You can't play with this toil.
Anybody can have him except you, exactly.
All right.
Now, let's move on to the transfer to sort of the transfer portal, which is something that has been made a big deal about that is one hundred percent not a big deal.
Not a big deal, dude.
Coaches have been and others have been hopping on Twitter x whatever you want to call it, making this JUCO issue because the NC double A just passed the i'll call it the Diego Pavier rule where now you don't have well, the A is fighting it, but they're allowing it just for this season, and they're fighting the injunction that got put in place in court, the Diego Pavia rule where if you went to JUCO, those years do not count against your FBS eligibility. And you've had coaches, oh, you're gonna have thirty year olds playing and this and that, and players are gonna coaches are gonna stash players in JUCO. This is the biggest kraker, you know what that I've heard, Ralph. At no point in time is it going to be a mass issue about schools trying to stick players in JUCO. Might they try to put players in JUCO that are academically ineligible to get into their university and say, all right, cool, you can take these classes and we'll get it, get it fixed, right. But they already have people to do that kind of kind of stuff, So why so why would that even be an issue anyway? And as a parent, listen, I know that JUCO what JUCO is. First of all, juco's being phased out in a lot of places anyway, so there aren't a ton of teams and where they're Like, when you see the living conditions and the financial conditions that JUCO players are in, you mean to tell me that kids are gonna be like, oh yeah, hell yeah, I'll go to East Mississippi Community College instead of going to Marshall because because Auburn wants to stick me in there for a year. Man, hell to the no, And what is the purpose of And if you're a parent, you're gonna be like, hold up, you don't have eighty five scholarships. You have one hundred and five scholarships. Now, either put my kid on scholarship and he goes there, or there ain't nothing to talk about because I'm not sending him to And then The other part that you have to think about, Ralph is that some of these kids are from economically disadvantaged situations and their parents are like, get him away from here, get him away from this environment and everything else.
Juko is disco with books. It is not.
Even for the coaches that do a really good job there, even for the programs there are. It is like being in high school. It's an event. You're grown up, so you can do grown up things. But you're in high school essentially, where there's so much freedom, there's less oversight. There's you know, like you're more likely to have trouble with the law and the community, all sorts of stuff. It is not where you want your kid to be. If a scholarship is a vail, I can't understand. And they're like, well, it'll be like a Mormon mission. Do you know what Mormon missions are like for these kids? These kids come back safely from Mormon missions.
Yeah, they don't get to watch TV. They don't get to go to concerts. Can you imagine, George, can you imagine? Can you imagine Oregon wanted to house you at a juco for two years to preserve your eligibility, and so they would have to pay you to do it right, Yes, you would show up at this JUCO with more money than your head coach. Yeah, in the campus in the middle of nowhere, filled with a bunch of crashouts. Because like that, JUCO is a great financial option for a lot of people who aren't the same options as a lot of people. JUCO is also a place where all the kids who barely graduated high school but have every means available to them to go to university end up because their parents are like, well, you just got to go do something like you be hanging out and go.
To ju for a year or two and then it's over.
But how how is a coach going to coach somebody who has more money than that?
Well, it happens.
It happens. But like, bro, you are.
One hundred percent right about that. And then the other aspect of it is, so now, as a parent and as a kid, you're taking a chance. We're gonna stash you at JUCO, and I'm supposed to believe the promise that that you're going to get me next year or two years from now. Do you guys, how insanely stupid that that is? Coaches leave, Coaches get fired. I'm supposed to depend on you that you'll be here a year from now, man, bs bs I do. Why would I trust you that you're going to be here a year from now.
I wrote an article this is years ago now that like the NC DOUBLEA is missing an opportunity to absorb JUCO right to have it be its own thing, essentially because junior colleges all over America are canceling football because they can't afford the insurance premiums and the headache of having football on campus. So the entire state of Arizona lost JUCO football. And you're talking about like major programs like Arizona Western and Yuma, Scottsdale Community College, Mesa Community College, MAASA Community College, one the biggest jucos in the entire country, just gone right. And so you know, the NC DOUBLEA should have stepped in financially to supplement this so that they could continue to absorb talent from the JUCO ranks, help get people academically right, and all of those things. And now you have just a few jucos left, and I it's very funny that people are worried about this thing. Number one is just an injunction. So This could be like the Mike Williams Maurice Clrett thing where they sued to go to the NFL. After only one year they were allowed to, and then the decision came back and excluded both Mike Williams and Maurice Clarette from being able to do that. The NCAA said, all right, well, buy a year on this. And you are seeing people joke about there being thirty year old football players, George, there's already several thirty year old football players in the ncaable.
This is the problem is that they think that is going to up the number of incidences.
Yeah. Well, Minnesota's punter is thirty Mark Crawford, he is thirty two years old. Virginia's kicker this year, Matt Ganiard, is thirty four. Jordan Noy's at Colorado State thirty two years old. USF Andrew Stokes thirty. TCU had a thirty year old last year. Illinois has a thirty year old punter. It there are things, military, out of country, all those things, you know, The truth of the matter is.
We had an old dude when I was at Oregon. He came from the military. He was like twenty six when he got there. Yeah, by far the oldest dude, and you could tell because he had been in the military and he was old.
You got tight bed corners.
Oh br tight everything, tight everything, And dude, I just don't see this as nearly as big of a problem as they're pretending it is going to be. I do understand how that could happen, but I don't think that people thought through the logistics of it. Is like, imagine and so who would they want to stick at Juco's. Okay, the players that they're going to try to allegedly stick at Juco's, they're not gonna get a five or a four star kid to go to a Juco. They're not gonna know it because they're gonna be like, I'll go somewhere else, and then the other So then you're like, okay, well they'll stick two and three star players there. Not if they have FBS offers and hope they think it's gonna work.
Like whole back years with high school players.
It's not the same thing because they're holding back in eighth grade or sixth grade, and if you're good to get on their steward with their friends, they're still in this safe environment. They're still all of this stuff and you think that that's going to bro They have lost their damn minds.
If you're good enough to get on the field at twenty one, you're gonna be on the field.
Yep.
You're not gonna be down at a at a JUCO. If you're not qualified academically, you're not gonna be down at a JUCO. If you're good enough to be on the field, would you rather Let's say somebody came to you and this is like five years down the road, and they said, we'll give your son three hundred thousand dollars to spend one year at like Long Beach Community College and then commit to US or UH Utah State is like, we'll have him. We got like one hundred thousand budget for our quarterback this year, will take him Utah State right right.
I don't know what the ain't no, this ain't no discussion. I'm not trusting no coach to put me in no damn And he might like Utah State might do well there, and he'll have an opportunity to leave and move up if he wants to, or stay there if he's if he's happy, get.
Out of here. They lost they damn mind all right, next thing up.
These assistant coaching salaries, Ralph are getting craggy. When I saw this list, I was I was flabbergasted because I didn't realize how big this list is. So the poorest assistant coach in the top ten is for my Oregon Ducks, Tash Loupoi at a whopping excuse me, a minuscule, just a minuscule, one point nine million dollars. Now, Oregon's defense is really good. I got no problem with him making one point nine million dollars because he's doing a good job.
That is, head coaches.
Used to be happy to get paid that There are a lot of head coaches that aren't making this type of money. So Tosh Loupoi at one point nine million, Morgan scali at Utah at two million dollars.
That feels like a good, good deal.
Here, Glenn Schuman at Georgia, interesting amount of money, I was. Excuse me, excuse me, Chip Kelly at number eight two million dollars, So him and Morgan Scalley are tied number seven. Defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann at Georgia two million and three thousand dollars. What do you think that three thousand is about to put you above the mother people at two million, Andy Sorry, DC at Florida State, Adam Fuller two million and fifteen thousand dollars, Andy Ludwick utah Oc well former utah Oc two million and fifty thousand. So I think it's interesting that you ta I had two coordinators up there that type of money because they're trying to keep Morgan Scalley around so.
He could be the next head coach.
Pete Golding to two point one point five million at Ole Miss Jim Knows the d C at Ohio State two point two million, Wink Martindale at two point three million dollars defensive coordinator at Michigan. All of these feel like that these are some of the top guys at their job. How about Blake Baker number one on this list, defensive coordinator at LSU two point five million.
That's a tough one because that's the number they had to give to get him out of Missoo. Right, I'm gonna make you the highest paid coordinator in all of college football if you leave Missoo, come to LSU where all the money is and their defense not so good.
Again, do the comments on the posts are hilarious. LSU and Florida State just throwing away money. Actually, Florida Florida State's defense was actually all right. Their offense was so bad that it put the defense in bad positions all the time. Their defense was fine. Uh, LSU should ask for a refund.
Well, and they're I mean, they're head coaches making eight figures, so it and they had defense into problems before Blake Baker got there. So I'm shout out to Blake Baker for getting paid life changing money to leave Miszoo. Had he stayed at Miszoo, maybe they go to a college football playoff. I don't know, but yeah, that was that. That was a tough one. Seeing him at the very top of the list. You have to imagine the.
Two coordinators that aren't on this list right now that maybe on this list is Golden and Dim Brown Goldend Notre Dame.
Yeah yeah. And then maybe D'Anton Lyne is getting something in the.
Oh at USC oh yeah, oh yeah, he's.
For sure making over two million dollars. For sure, there's no way, because he was making over a million at UCLA and they post him.
So okay, So I want to read you. I want to read you an article. I know that that doesn't make for great podcasting, but I want to read you part of an article from the year two thousand. Is that. Okay? Okay? This article is by a man named Greg Schroeder. George Schroeder, George Schroder, my man. Two bits, four bits, two million, two million dollar college coaches hit pay dirt and much more so. This is from June eleventh, two thousand, just twenty four years ago. Okay, and I'm gonna skip to the middle of the article. Salaries really began escalating the latter half of the last decade. After Florida won the nineteen ninety six National Championship, Steve Spurrier got a two million dollar deal. Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley indicated the contract and subsequent bumps to Spurrier's salary were necessary because the lucrative offers NFL teams had begun offering Spurrier and fully said it was justified because the astronomic revenue figures that Gators were raking in from football. It's a common argument at the top levels. College football is a cash cow bringing in millions. Why shouldn't the architect of the success, the person with the highest profile of a high pressure situation be compensated. Several other schools quickly followed Florida's lead. A year ago, Rick Neuheisel got one million dollars to leave Colorado for Washington. Kentucky's how tcused Dennis Franchioni and Kentucky's how Mommy both had their contracts reworked to around eight hundred thousand dollars. Arkansas bumped Houston Nuts salary of about four hundred thousand to near seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Who's raking in the big bucks in two thousand.
Buddy Tommy Tuberbille at this time was making about nine hundred thousand dollars, while Kansas State's Bill Snyder, Texas's Mac Brown and RC Slocum at Texas A and M All earned about one million. Dan McCartney of Iowa State only made three hundred thousand. Bob Stoops made an estimated six hundred and fifty thousand at Oklahoma. That is twenty four years ago. We're talking about four coaches total, four total coach making six figures, and this list that you have up right now is at least nine assistant coaches making two million per year plus several that we don't have the salary data on.
Boy times is changing. Boy, Hey, hey, you're going to have people who you know how people used to try to groom their kids to well, they groom their kids to be professional athletes or you know, or anything else. Doctors, lawyers. Why would you not groom your kid to be a head coach one hundred million dollar contracts?
Yeah, I likes them the skills that they need.
Like, we are going to study football, son, We are going to I know that you won't play football because your genetics are not set up that way.
We are going to teach you leadership classes. We are going to teach you the game.
We're gonna get you around all the smart people, send you to all the clinics the way you can be the next Kenny Dillingham.
Sorry, young guy up due to ranks. How's that a bad path? So?
I mean, I mean there's a lot of parents who don't might not understand that. I have switched recently from from saying stuff to my oldest son, like hey, you could play Madden when you finish your homework, to hey, you can finish your homework after you play Madden.
Yeah, because you might be a game like that actually might be their career path which is real. Yeah, lasting up today? Oh what do you think about this? About the People's Championship that's getting ready to take place, which is the Big Twill Championship f the People's Championship? So oh Jake Crohenhawk howk uh quarterback over at BYU?
Yes? Yes, yes, reds laugh. Who was that? Who did I just say?
We're talking about that Florida State?
Oh yeah yeah yeah Jake Retz left and aka the BYG.
It makes me uncomfortable to say that. I don't know why, me too.
So he decides that when they were in the press conference for the Alamo Bowl that he said that this is the People's Big Ten Championship BYU versus Colorado. I'm like, no, it's not. Arizona State was the People's Champion. Arizona State was the Big twelve champion and the People's Champion. Sorry, b y, you you had the opportunity you lost to Arizona State. Colorado had the opportunity they lost their next to last game to get in the Big Twelve Championships. So sorry, this is your Yes, no, this is not the the People's Championship. This is the do you know what this is? This is the Big twelve Intercontinental title. That's what it is, tag team match or something. This is not the Heavyweight Championship. This is this is the this is the this is the money in the Bank title or something. This is you know, Summer Slam. This isn't the championship.
I I thought it was funny.
This is hell in the sale, this is make believe, Make believe.
It's gonna be a pretty wild third place trophy. I can admit this. That's a fun matchup. Yes, I will watch. I am excited to watch it. Yeah, and I do think b Yu is gonna get wrecked by Colorado, But I could be wrong. I could be wrong about that. I think b Why He's a really good team. They did lose the airs on the state. Both of them lost to Kansas, which is the funniest part about all this. Yes, Kansas fans had to be looking at that comment like, wait a minute, are we the People's Champion? But it's funny, Jake rat stuff is funny. It's gonna be a good game. But they did have the opportunity to win the field. I will say this, The Alamo, right, the Alamo Bowl, San Antonio, Texas. The Alamo was a building that was held by the Texian Army, the Texans, right, They weren't Americans at the time, they were Texans, and they held this building for months, and they withstood the onslaught from the Mexican army, who eventually did kill everyone in that building. And then at the end of the day, neither the Texans nor the Mexicans control San Antonio because Texas is part of the United States of America. So I will say this, It actually does make sense that two teams who don't actually have anything to do with the Big Two championship are pretending that it's a really big deal when they're playing in the Alamo Bowl, which is named after a building in a battle where neither of the two armies ended up controlling that territory. Yeah, like that, that makes perfect sense to me historically. And I will be watching the game and I do think Colorado is gonna win.
Median Ralph This is that story made me.
Uh, there's a dude on Netflix right now who has a new special.
Hold up, let me pull.
It up while we're said, and he said the funniest line that and it made me laugh because you were sitting here giving me a history lesson, right, And in the trailer, he says, man, I know I know nothing about history because every single time that I watch a documentary about history, it's like it's like the first time that I ever saw.
Like I'm sitting on my I with baited breath. Oh it's name gets.
The fact that you're just discovering Nate Bargatzi is incredible.
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no no.
No, I'm not just discovering men. You just did this on his new special that just came out.
Yes, yes, highest grossing comedian of twenty twenty four, People's champion, People's Champion of comedy.
If you will see, I would have guessed it would have been what's his name? Who who just got in trouble talk talking about black people? H Andrew Schultz.
Hmmm. Yeah, well here's the deal. Here's the deal, people under Yeah you did. People underestimate clean shows, clean comedy, something you could watch with your family. People underestimate the amount of money you can make by just not cussing.
Yep, exactly, exactly.
Yeah, so that's exactly what is going on, So I am going to take I'm gonna take College Colorado to win because I appreciate the fact that he has three dudes that are going to get drafted, well, two dudes who are gonna be top ten picks that are playing in the game.
I think Dyu actually has a couple of guys who hit the portal and aren't gonna play.
Yeah see see one one. One of these guys loves foot football, one of them is right for the game and everything, and one of them is not you guys, that is the college football apostles. I'm George Reiser, He's Ralph Ampston. Peace out, catch you guys later.
