A president who governed Syria for 24 years has been handed a death sentence by his own nation. And this verdict was delivered in his absence. Why such a judgment? What are the crimes Bashar al-Assad committed? Where is Assad now? The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus has handed down death sentences to Bashar al-Assad; his brother Maher al-Assad, former head of the Syrian Army's Fourth Armored Division; and his relative Atif Najib, former Brigadier General of the Syrian Army. The sentences were issued for war crimes committed during Syria's 14-year-long civil conflict. The court ruling specifies that the crimes include premeditated murders, crimes against humanity, and the brutal torture of prisoners and political opponents.
