In a meeting convened by former eThekwini Speaker Logie Naidoo at the 1860 Heritage Centre in Durban last week, representatives from most religious faiths agreed that such a document would go a long way to unite the country. The meeting stemmed from widespread condemnation of a religious leader criticising the South Indian tradition of Amman or porridge prayers. Naidoo explains how the forum plans to work with all faiths to establish mutual harmony...

The South African National Defence Force had to be deployed to KwaDabeka in Clermont, west of Durban, after overnight looting left businesses counting millions of rands in losses. At least two supermarkets and a dental practice were broken into, with cash safes, stock and equipment stolen. The incidents came after Tuesday's anti-undocumented immigrant protests. Environmental activists in Durban believe plastic pollution is becoming more prevalent and continues to negatively impact various eco-systems. This comes as we mark Plastic Free July - an initiative that began as a challenge but quickly evolved into a movement across the globe. Plastics, through litter and pollution eventually make its way into water systems, polluting ecosystems, leaching toxic chemicals which break down into microplastics, infiltrate the food chain for animals and humans. Romy Wenzel from non-profit organisation, the Clean Surf Project says more awareness campaigns are needed to education citizens on the harmful impact of plastics on the environment...
