Blog-June 4, 2024-10-11—It’s YOUR Agri Business
When you talk about Agriculture---its really the number one industry when you combine South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. We like to follow along and share stories across state lines.
Today---Thom Peterson—Minnesota Ag Commissioner helped us lead off the show----they have been worried about drought in our neighbors to the east---but as Commissioner Peterson pointed out they just got 4 inches of rain that changed the scenario. He talks about those questions—though he said re-planting hasn’t been much of an issue----but what is challenging is the Avian Influenza----many cases reported and yes there are concerns----
The Governor from Minnesota----yes Governor Walz and his team—including Commissioner Peterson will be doing trade talks in
Canada---we’ll get an update when he gets back---but we know all of our states in the Dakotas-Minnesota-and Iowa---are not afraid to take their products on the road and sell-sell-sell.
We always talk to “Pete” about stress ---something that affects all of us---he can provide awareness of those in Minnesota—who need help---Iowa’s Ag Secretary can also talk about it---as well as what we see in South Dakota. Its something we need to be aware of ---and help where we can.
Robin Salverson---with SDSU Extension joined us this morning to talk about the fact many are taking up the offer to test livestock water across South Dakota.
Poor water quality can hurt livestock’s growth and reproduction –make it critical to monitor their water supply. Severely contaminated water can cause illness or death---and really—testing is the only way to be sure because even clear water can be of poor quality.
SDSU offers water testing at all 8 regional centers and at 26 county offices around South Dakota. The tests are already showing high total salt contents.
Water supplies can be taken to one of the SDSU Extension sites-samples must be collected in a clean plastic or glass container-such as a sanitized water or pop bottle or a jelly container. A quick test is conducted free of charge with an electro-conductivity meter to determine total salts in the water.
We will be updating with Robin and SDSU Extension –twice a month to see what they are seeing and what our audience should know about the testing’s.
Geri Eide---FFA of South Dakota and Ava Kerner of Gregory talked to us about the scholarship Ava had received. The number of scholarships from FFA is always impressive---and regardless of what Ava and the other winners receive or decide to do career-wise---It seems to bring them back to involved with the next generation of FFA members. We look to follow along—and look forward to meeting the students and competitors at the State Fair in Huron at the end of August.
Sarah Heinrich----KFGO Fargo---does the Growing Harvest Network report for us in each show and on some of our Midwest Communication Stations each week-day. We appreciate the cross-pollination of topics we hear---and share with our audience.
        Matt Swenson—the owner-the partner—the up-to-the minute market man—Swenson Commodities--- gives us the mid-morning numbers---the grains—the meat—the energy—and YES the BIG BOARD on WALL STREET.
Candi Briley---SD State Fair joined us and counted down to 80 or so days before the Huron State Fair opens.
We look forward to our trip to the State Fair at the end of August---and seeing for ourselves what is being done---and how we can talk to those show and telling. If you go back to the interview with Candi---she shares the projects they are doing---what will be different including a Wednesday Start---
Casey Crabtree ---on this Primary Election Day in South Dakota—took time to talk to us about the importance of the election today----what he is seeing with the “daily double” candidates—sharing signs and ideas---and key issues that well need to followed when the lawmakers get back to the State Capital.
Mr. Tree---John Ball---joined us-----we had a chance to catch him on top of one of the highest peaks in Western South Dakota this morning. We talked about the emerald ash borers—how they are showing up in Canton---and what else he sees as important as we head on thru the first full week of June.
Our It’s YOUR Agri Business Show—covers a lot of ground—reaches out to our own state leaders as well as those in Iowa and Minnesota—and sometimes those folks north of the border.
Listen live to our show at 1320, 105.1, 107.9—use the KELO App—streaming on line or just ask Alexa.
Norm Anderson with the 10:00 show –he posts the next day----look for the June 4th 10-11 show for this event---and feel free to call/text me at 605-728-2455 (BILL) or email me at bill.zortman@mwcradio.com.
