Getting to the gilded ballroom of Mar-a-Lago was a long strange trip for Tamir Sapir, a USSR emigrant who pulled off an astonishing transformation from VCR shop owner to billionaire Russian oil dealer to Manhattan developer.  It was that last transformation that brought him not only into the real estate orbit of Donald J. Trump, but also the Mar-a-Lago ballroom where Trump emceed the wedding of Tamir’s daughter. On hand: 600 dancing oligarchs and more than a few rollicking businessmen, too.  Tamir’s VCR shop partner, Sam Kislin, wound up in the international export business, making millions, donating generously to Rudy Giuliani’s New York campaigns, angrily denouncing reports of ties to the Russian mob and offering fat mortgages to people wanting to buy units in Trump World Tower. And getting robbed of tons of chicken legs.  In Father of the Bride, we look at both men’s roads to riches and how they intertwined with the man who would be president of the United States.

In our first podcast, Father of the Bride, we took you to a Mar-a-Lago wedding filled with dancing oligarchs, happy businessmen and a celebrity emcee: Donald J. Trump.  In Prince of Diamonds, we tell the tale of the groom, real estate maven Rotem Rosen, who with his new brother-in-law once chatted up Trump on the possibility of a Moscow hotel. His former boss, Lev Leviev, a USSR emigrant whose diamond riches were made possible by the Kremlin, reportedly kept a framed picture of Vladimir Putin on his desk. Dmitry Ryobololev might have been just another handsome oligarch with lots of cash and a penchant for sunny real estate. There are quite a few USSR and Russian emigrants who have flown across the big blue pond and parked millions in South Florida condos.  But it was the heart doctor-turned potash king’s fate to spend his millions on a Palm Beach mansion Donald Trump was trying to unload. He once dismissed the property as an ugly pastry.  He overpaid for it anyway.  But to paraphrase an old saying, the rich spend their money very differently from you and me. We look at where Dmitry spent his, and why that might have mattered to his ex-wife, Trump’s Treasury Secretary Wilbur Ross and, perhaps federal investigators.

Not so long ago, if you were a Russian oligarch worried about whether the ruble was stable, or even if you just wanted your money out of the country, the tiny island of Cyprus was a favored place to stash cash. If you were a Russian mobster, it was a pretty good place to stash cash, too. Even Paul Manafort, neither oligarch nor mobster, was tucking away millions in Cyprus banks. And almost none of the banks seemed more popular than the Bank of Cyprus.  Dmitry Ryobololev, the man who overpaid for Donald Trump’s Palm Beach mansion, owned just about 10 percent of it. But when it began to fail, it was a Palm Beacher with a close tie to Donald J. Trump, not a Russian, who rode to the rescue: Wilbur Ross.

A comprehensive business card for Felix Sater would include a laundry list of rare job titles. Felix Sater: Senior Trump Adviser, National Security Enforcer, Ukrainian Peace Plan Producer, Mob Networker, International Snitch, Real Estate Developer, Bin-Laden Hunter, Stock Swindler, Money Man, Felon. Sater’s name has come up, a lot, in the past year or two. That’s partly because of what those very interesting job titles represent.  Also, he gets his picture taken with some really interesting people. And once wielded a mean margarita glass, shattered, not stirred.  Then there’s his relationship with the Department of Justice, and how that smoothed the way for Felix to keep his past quiet while he did big-money business deals with, among others, a doomed Iceland investment fund, and Donald J. Trump, before he would become president.

Episode 5: Margarita Man, Part 1

When people scrutinize Felix Sater’s business deals with Donald Trump, Trump SoHo is frequently the focus. Working out of Trump Tower, Sater was a top manager at Bayrock, was a developer on the project with Trump. But there was a lesser-known condo hotel deal involving Bayrock, Sater and Trump: a Fort Lauderdale condo hotel that never got built. Launched just as the real estate marketing was cratering, the project imploded. Angry would-be buyers sued Trump and others. Among their complaints: Nobody had ever told them about Sater’s long-hidden criminal past. They said Trump should have told them. But Trump said he didn’t really know the details of those crimes. And, he said, he didn’t know Felix Sater.

Episode 6: Margarita Man, Part 2

Dancing Oligarchs is a breezy six-episode podcast that looks at the sometimes amusing, and often telling confluence of Russians and Donald Trump in Florida.

The podcast, written and conceived by Palm Beach Post investigative reporter Pat Beall with columnist Frank Cerabino, is a clearinghouse of Trump-Russia connections in Florida that you may have known, thought you knew, or may be surprised to just be learning.

It takes listeners from the gilded ballroom of Mar-a-Lago, where hundreds of oligarchs gathered for a Trump-emceed wedding of the daughter of a billionaire Russian oil dealer, to eyebrow-raising business deals with a cast of characters whose influence stretches from doomed Icelandic investment funds, over-leveraged Cyprus banks, and a Trump-named hotel in Fort Lauderdale that went belly up.

Along the way there are broken margarita glasses, stolen frozen chicken legs and a Trump-promoting Haitian-American rapper. 


And speaking of music, to give this podcast a proper Russian vibe, the background accordion music you hear is played by Cerabino, who also adds some witty asides to Beall’s stories.
