On Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, Hendry County Sheriff's Office authorities received a call about a car fire near Clewiston. Inside was the body of a 23-year-old transgender woman from Pahokee. She had been "burned beyond recognition." The sheriff's office is investigating her death as a homicide, the 18th reported killing of a transgender woman in the U.S. this year.
