Going for a run should be about pace, breathing and the freedom of movement, not calculating whether you will make it home safely. Yet women’s safety while running and exercising outdoors has once again become an urgent conversation in South Africa, following concern from the Kempton Park running community and renewed calls for safer public spaces. Fitness presenter, burnout and mental fitness coach Liezel van der Westhuizen joins the conversation to unpack what women can practically do to reduce risk while running, walking or cycling, without turning personal safety advice into victim-blaming. From route planning, running groups and location sharing to situational awareness and knowing when to abandon a workout, Liezel explores realistic strategies women can incorporate into their training. She also looks at international research showing that safety concerns among female runners extend far beyond South Africa, and asks the bigger question: why should women have to redesign their exercise routines around the threat of harassment or violence? This is a timely conversation about fitness, freedom, community responsibility and what needs to change to make outdoor exercise safer for everyone
