You might know Mark Holland as Canada's former Health Minister, or from his current role as CEO of Toronto’s famous CNE. But you might not know about his high degree of beard envy, his flair for what he wears, or the winding road that brought him to where he is today.
In this episode, Mark discusses what it was like to serve in a public-facing role during some of the most challenging health issues of our generation — along with what his life outside that role looked like then, and now.
After a turning point in 2011, when he lost his political seat, Holland watched much of the life he had built change at once. His career, marriage and relationship with his children suffered. He was struggling while standing under the public spotlight, but asking for help felt like admitting he was weak.
Mark opens up about where that need to prove himself came from, the toll of spending years in public life, and what he learned about himself when he finally reached his limits. He also shares what helped pull him back and what he does differently today.
The conversation then turns to the bigger picture of men’s health in Canada and what Holland learned from leading the country’s health portfolio. A man who once believed keeping everything to himself was for the best reflects on why it’s time to let go of that idea.
