📣 Remembering America’s Last Town Crier — Julius Myers and His Horse Tootsey

Boerne Radio News is delivered to you by The Boerne Star.

And by Boost Boerne Business at Sunny’s All Day Brunch and Bar tomorrow from 4-6 sponsored by KM Business and Marketing, Kendall County Women’s Shelter, and The Big Give…register at boerneradio.com

It’s Thursday September 18th.

The last town crier in America died on this date in 1929.  Julius Myers moved from New York to Luling Texas and then San Antonio in 1911 to begin a career in advertising.  For 15 years, he shouted out the news from his horse Tootsey. When the San Antonio City Council banned city criers in 1926 with the advent of radio, Julius made a deal to continue with the condition that he could only advertise baseball games and Tootsey had to stay in the barn. When he passed away, it made national news…and still making news on Boerne Radio.

I’m Baron Wiley.

It’s Big Give Day in our neck of the woods as Boerne Radio is hosting our Boost Boerne Business networking and we’re showcasing some fine non-profits at our event today at Sonny’s All Day Brunch and Bar - we’ll honor Kendall County Women’s Shelter, Hill Country Animal League, and the Military Warriors Support Foundation.  We’ll meet from 4-6 - admission is free, and we do it thanks to Clear View Bookkeeping, and KM Business and Marketing.

And right after that we’ll head to Main Plaza on Main Street as the Kendall County Republican Club, Women, and Party are hosting a Charlie Kirk Vigil that starts 6:45 tonight.  Over 600 folks responded online as going or interested in going and celebrating Charlie Kirk’s life.

Fourteen local artists brought their works to the Carriage House Gallery of Artists this past weekend, taking part in a special seven-week show designed to raise funds to help save the Monarch butterfly. Boerne is a special location that butterflies stop, and according to the artists, if we don’t intervene, they will be extinct by 2030. The gallery included artists like John Freud and Dee Nelson, as well as unique stitched art, ceramics and oil paintings. You can read more about the event in this Sunday’s edition of the Boerne Star.

Boerne’s own Timothy James White, or TJ to friends, has recently been appointed as Chief of the Texas Cyber Command. Governor Abbot said, “Admiral White’s decades of honorable military service to our country combined with his cybersecurity expertise makes him the leader we need at the helm of the Texas Cyber Command”.  The Command was created to protect the cybersecurity of Texas and protect against threats.

And by Boerne Radio’s special Power Luncheon on Thursday October 2nd at the Kendall Inn.

Pastor Robert Emmitt will be our special speaker - he’s the founder of Community Bible Church as Robert grew his humble church from 100 to over 15,000 making it the largest church in San Antonio…and in the top 40 in the country.  We’ll share in a great lunch, network, and give away some great door prizes.  Register now at boerneradio.com.   Sponsorships also available just like our friends at Texas Heritage Bank and Sendero.
