The leader of Ethiopia's former rebel group, Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), Debretsion Gebremichael, has called for the holding of elections "immediately" in Tigray. He said the interim administration can only govern for between six months and a year, in line with the Pretoria peace agreement, according to a post on Facebook.

He has stressed that the people of Tigray have to be led by leaders of their own choice. To discuss this further is Advocate Sipho Mantula Researcher at the Thabo Mbeki African School on Public and International Affairs.

Heavy downpours are forecast to continue in Kenya where at least 32 people have lost their lives and more than forty thousand forced from their homes across the country because of the rain and flooding. Heavy rain has pounded the east African country in recent days, causing widespread devastation. Local media reported that residents of the Mathare slum had been forced to sleep on rooftops earlier this week. Amnesty International South Africa (SA) says 30 years into democracy millions in the Southern African country still grapples with the denial of their fundamental human rights. The human rights organisation says lack of access to quality healthcare,  safe drinking water, high murder rates and increases in cases of Gender-based violence (GBV) are some of the signs that the democratic government has failed to uphold the human rights of many. The European Council President Charles Michel has pledged to work closely with Senegal to address issues like migration and development. His recent arrival in Dakar  marked his first trip by a foreign dignitary since the West African country's new president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye took office earlier this month. Michel has told Faye that the European Union has an objective interest in Senegal's challenges of development, economic emergence, and improved living conditions.
