A school principal based in South Africa's (SA)  North West province has been awarded the presidential long service award and special recognition for his incredible leadership by the South African Principals Association.

The organisation which has a foot print in Africa and internationally aims to develop educators to perform better in their schools. Isaac Pila's award comes as several provinces are in the predicament of having to slash spending because the national government did not increase funding for provincial departments to cater for the 7-point-5 percent wage increase for public servants for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years.

SA Principal awarded presidential award for leadership

Cape Verde President José Maria Neves announced on Monday that the country will hold legislative elections on May 17 and a presidential election on November 15, following consultations with the Council of the Republic and registered political parties. He said the dates meet constitutional requirements, with a presidential runoff scheduled for November 29 if no candidate secures an outright majority. He has called on all political actors and civil society to exercise restraint and engage in high-level debate to ensure inclusive and peaceful elections. However, questions remain about how robust and trustworthy Cape Verde's governance institutions are, including the electoral commission responsible for overseeing elections in the country. The South African Institution of Civil Engineering - SAICE says from an engineering and transport planning perspective, the scholar transport tragedy that claimed the lives of 12 school children this week, underscores the vulnerability of scholar transport within South Africa's broader road environment. Preliminary reports indicate that the incident involved a minibus transporting learners in the Vanderbijlpark area in the Gauteng province to school which collided with a heavy vehicle on a busy arterial road. SAICE says while the full investigation is still underway, the circumstances surrounding this crash point once again raise the deeply interconnected challenges of road design, vehicle safety, driver behaviour, traffic management, and regulatory oversight.  Lulu Gaboo spoke to Chief Executive Officer at SAICE, Sekadi Phayane - Shakhane
