The South African Institution of Civil Engineering - SAICE says from an engineering and transport planning perspective, the scholar transport tragedy that claimed the lives of 12 school children this week, underscores the vulnerability of scholar transport within South Africa's broader road environment. Preliminary reports indicate that the incident involved a minibus transporting learners in the Vanderbijlpark area in the Gauteng province to school which collided with a heavy vehicle on a busy arterial road. SAICE says while the full investigation is still underway, the circumstances surrounding this crash point once again raise the deeply interconnected challenges of road design, vehicle safety, driver behaviour, traffic management, and regulatory oversight.
