Amnesty stages silent demonstration for SA Human Rights defenders

View descriptionShare

Amnesty International South Africa (SA) is staging a silent demonstration for human rights defenders outside the GCIS Ronnie Mamoepa Media Centre in Pretoria. The organisation says little has changed since its first demonstration in February 2026, with human rights defenders continuing to face threats and killings.

Amnesty is calling on the SA government to develop and adopt domestic legislation to recognise and protect human rights defenders. South Africa currently has no specific legal or policy framework dedicated to their protection.

Lulu Gaboo spoke to Cassandra Dorasamy, a campaigner at Amnesty International SA.
