On the eve of Nelson Mandela Day, a permanent monument honouring South Africa's first democratic president is drawing international attention from the Arctic city of Tromsø in northern Norway. Researchers and experts warn that South Africa is facing a water crisis, a problem that has been years in the making. The country's drinkable water crisis is driven by collapsing municipal infrastructure, rampant leakage, and poor governance. 37% of its treated water is lost before it reaches consumers, while 105 municipalities are grappling with a failing infrastructure. Government says it needs about 24 billion dollars to rehabilitate the water and sanitation infrastructure across the country. This has led to an increased and prolonged water shedding.
