AI competition matters because it can accelerate innovation, scientific discovery, productivity, and economic development. But AI safety matters because capability without adequate control can create risks we don't fully understand.

The important question is not simply, “How powerful can we make AI?” It is:

“Can human control keep pace with AI capability?”
