South Africa has experienced a growing number of kidnappings over the past year, with over 1100 reported cases during the first half of last year. According to Specialist insurer, iTOO, kidnapping for ransom and extortion have shown are also on the rise with criminals now targeting mid to lower-income individuals. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to iTOO Managing Director of Special Risks, Justine Naylor about the prevalence of this crime.

Members of Parliament's Ad Hoc committee, excluding the ANC, have agreed that there is evidence that businessman and self-proclaimed political fixer, Brown Mogotsi, had influence over Senzo Mchunu, the police minister who was placed on special leave in July 2025. Committee members are in the process of compiling their draft preliminary report. The committee was established to investigate concerns over national security.

A massive Mandrax operation has been uncovered at a secluded smallholding in Erasmia, west of Pretoria. Police say the suspected laboratory had the capacity to produce up to 800-thousand tablets a day. Two foreign nationals have been arrested, while investigators are now on underway to discover the alleged masterminds behind the operation. Musa Mhlongo reports.

Researchers at the University of the Free State say more could have been done to prevent the Jargersfontein mine dam wall collapse. The disaster claimed three lives and destroyed more than a hundred homes. 11 September marks four years since the tragedy occurred in 2022. According to research Associate, Phia van der Watt - hope was still breathing amongst the Jagersfontein residents in 2023, with the promise of good quality homes and a better future. However, after her last visit in 2025, van der Watt sense that all was lost.
