Police say the illegal miners in Stilfontein, in the North West, are not trapped underground by are rather trying to avoid arrest from the police. The police insist that they will not tolerate criminality while the miners continue to beg for food and water to be let into he mine. The standoff between the two was triggered to police's operation Vala Mgodi which blocked the supply of foods and water underground. Police say the remain on standby to arrest or assist those who need medical attention. National police spokesperson, Brigadier, Athlenda Mathe explains. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporter, Thabang Morutloa and David van Wyk, Mining expert and lead researcher at Bench Marks Foundation.
