Authorities say the illegal miners currently underground in Stilfontein, in the North West province, are not trapped, rather, they remain underground in an effort to avoid being arrested by police.

Police say the illegal miners in Stilfontein, in the North West, are not trapped underground by are rather trying to avoid arrest from the police. The police insist that they will not tolerate criminality while the miners continue to beg for food and water to be let into he mine. The standoff between the two was triggered to police's operation Vala Mgodi which blocked the supply of foods and water underground. Police say the remain on standby to arrest or assist those who need medical attention.
