Chris Q Radebe - Head Writer (Isibaya)
I have acquired a lot of knowledge through working with the very best writers, on some of the best shows the local television industry has to offer. I consume a lot of great television, to see what makes them great. And I also watch the bad, to see why they don't work. I'm currently working on my very first show with Netflix. It's my first comedy drama. The broadcaster just asked for a second season. The Working Title: Shut Up! Men Are Talking The Logline: Having lost her husband two years earlier, Nontobeko falls in love again. Except, she lives in a world where her husband is buried in the front yard and moving on is considered taboo. But Nontobeko is not about to let patriarchy and misogyny go unpunished. The Genre: Drama The location/language: Rural KwaZulu/Natal in South Africa/IsiZulu The format: 6-Part Series Plot: The story starts simply enough, with Nontobeko and her three friends chatting happily while doing laundry at the river. Their chatter is interrupted, pleasantly so, by Mhlonishwa, the chief’s son, who has been pursuing Nontobeko for almost two years now. While the women blush at the sweet words that are coming out of Mhlonishwa’s mouth, Qhathizwe Zondi, the
antagonist, appears out of nowhere and barks at his young wife, Kwenzekile, ordering her to pack her stuff and head home to prepare something for him to eat. It immediately becomes apparent that the women are used to this kind of misogyny. After Qhathizwe takes his wife and stalks off, Mhlonishwa vows to keep pursuing Nontobeko until she opens her heart and lets him in. While Nontobeko secretly considers giving Mhlonishwa a chance, even though doing so would be frowned upon in the world they are in, Qhathizwe shows up and rapes her. Nontobeko reports this incident to the local chief, but she is asked for proof. When she doesn’t have any, she is dismissed. Qhathizwe reappears and makes it clear he will keep coming back and raping her until she gives in and lets him be her secret lover. And that’s when Nontobeko’s late soldier husband’s hidden gun finally comes in handy. She invites Qhathizwe to her house, pretending to have finally had a change of heart. When he arrives, she makes him take off his clothes, points the gun at him and drags him all the way to the chief’s place, where Mhlonishwa has gathered the chief and the council. But, to everyone’s shock, the chief takes Qhathizwe’s side. When Mhlonishwa tries to intervene, the chief banishes him from the village and threatens to subject Nontobeko to the same fate. And that’s when Nontobeko decides to take the fight to the men. Directed by: Chris Q. Radebe Written by: Chris Q.
