Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga says her department is moving ahead with the Automatic Progression Policy. The policy proposes that a learner may only repeat a grade once in the Foundation Phase (Grade R – Grade 3) to prevent them from being retained in this phase for longer than four years. Some education experts have warned that the automatic progression policy may have dire consequences for the country’s education system.
