HAPPY HALLOWEEK. Shriek at the top of your lungs for bad boyfriends, slaying slashers, and Courtney Cox. The person most confused by the film this week was: us, because we still have no idea who put this on the list.
Toss Popcorn is a production of iHeartRadio.
Happy Halloween. WHOA.
I'm Leanna Holsten and I'm Sienna Jacob and welcome to Toss Popcorn. The podcast were two idiots watched every film on the AFI's one hundred Greatest American Movies of All Time, the very slightly less racist tenth Anniversary edition, and are now for the spooky season watching spooky films.
Woo. This podcast is a safe house for people who don't know anything about movies. Today we're watching Scream Number one. You can Never Have Sex, a movie that people talk about Halloween. I don't know, and we watched it, me and Leanna. Warning there will be spoilers about this slashy old film.
Yes, oh, Sienna, could I please hear your prediction for the movie Scream?
Yes? Please, It'll give you a little bit of context for my evening.
Oh hey, Leanna, Hey, it's Sienna. I'm about to watch Scream. I just experienced a truly disgusting evening.
Oh, I'll have to tell you about it.
I just did a show, Oh god, and it is so funny that I have to watch Scream now.
Yeah.
I think it's like sort of like a parody sort of vibe. Right, it's like a slasher and maybe it'll be like, oh, maybe it'll be very it's kind of over the top. Oh, I'm really hoping there's not anything too disgusting. Usually I could handle it, but my stomach is I'm already nauseous.
Oh my gosh.
So we'll see I love you, goodbye. We were in a show that was like an experimental show at a punk venue and it's like, exactly what my dad thinks is what we're doing all the time is our show? And while being there, I was like, Yeah, this is this is not the place I want to be spending my life. Oh, it's so gross. I'll tell you more about it in Hey girl, but i'd love to hear your prediction. Yes, good morning, clean.
I'm about to watch Scream.
Why are we doing that?
Yeah?
I forget why this is a stabby movie. I don't know who did you put it on?
I know I think Drew Barrymore is on the phone and that guy with the scream mask?
Oh my god?
Is it is it based off the Edward Munch paint?
That's what I always thought.
Is that what it's called screen?
That's what I always thought about, Oh well, anyway, I protect I'm gonna have a bad time. Love you.
Why.
I always thought they were like when I was a kid and knew about this, I thought they were like somehow connected. Oh my gosh.
As a child, you were like, I believe this is by the edvard.
I did, and I thought that maybe like the painting art had to do with it.
But no, would that that had been the case? Yeah, how did this end up on the list? I know, how did this happen?
Maybe somebody suggested it, maybe I said it.
What that must have been, I don't know. It must have been requested.
I don't know. I don't even know how I would have thought about it. The first spooky there, the first spooky thing about this movie is that we have no idea why we watched this.
Yeah, watch a scary movie. How did this happen?
We said we should probably watch one horror thing. No, so I guess suggested it.
I just can't imagine I can imagine as saying we should watch something spooky and horror. Yeah. I can't imagine us then saying let's watch scream.
Yeah, why wouldn't we watch like one of the ones people throw ass.
For like anything anything at all. Oh yeah, well, yeah, wondering because it's already happened. Because it's happened. Well, imagine if we released this and then the episode rapidly ended and it started again, and we were like, hey, welcome to toss Popcorn. We watched a different movie because we didn't decided that this shouldn't. We didn't know why this one was one that we watched.
I would love that.
Actually, I like your take, though. The spookiest part of the whole experience is that it somehow ended up on the list.
Someone put it on the list.
Well explicably.
M Well, let's keep let's keep going, Leanna. Yes, I didn't get a chance to make coffee this morning, and it'll actually be kind of an interesting art piece.
Oh yeah, We're in a fascinating thing where Siena is not caffeinated and I have a hard out. Well, so we have to move quick, but we don't know how.
Leona. If you are Leanna, hey girl, Hey girl, how's it going?
May I say, as of as of this this afternoon, a wrong has been righted.
Yeah, I have.
I have retrieved equal pay.
I am for equal work. Unbelievably proud of you.
I have to keep things vague again because the wrong has been righted and nobody really addressed. It's it's all good, We're good. So being a woman is actually totally cool and fine.
And last episode we were talking about sexism. Yes, you're not going to hear anything about misogyny in this episode of screen.
God damn right. Other than that, I'm just yearning for a bit more spook in my life. Yeah, some places decorate their stores with a little bit of spook or orange and black, but it's just not ubiquitous enough.
I am so surprised to hear that, hmm, that it's not you know, just because so much consumer stuff around America is also very.
Much like Halloween. But I guess obviously it makes sense that your excitement over a holiday is a very cultural thing.
Like if I had to buy a costume, I don't even know where I would go. Whoa there is there is not a spirit Halloween taking over an abandoned retail shop.
This is crazy because I've seen many British films in which there was a costume party as part of the bit.
Well, and what's weird is they'll do fancy dress, which is what they call costumes. Yeah, at kind of any time of years. That's what it sees, is like, according to the movies. According to the movies. Well, and if if we learned one thing from Scream, it's that movies teach us how real life works.
Yes, wow, Sienna, Uh huhy girl, Hey girl, I can't wait to hear a lot of the things you have to tell me. I'm learning for a bit less spook in a certain way because I just keep getting disgusted by things.
Oh god, Yeah, So what happened que horrible discuss? Was this the play that you're in or was this something else?
This was we had a freak nature gig. We had a puppet gig. It was with a comedian that's like beloved among weird circles. But honestly, it all felt exploitative and weird. It was like clear that the manager was like, oh, you have to go and like kind of go off of this adult swim energy. But I don't think that was this guy's actual vibe, but it was just it was really weird anyway. So that was a weird undertone that we all felt really uncomfortable about because we didn't know that was going to be the vibe and he's sort of just a famous La puppeteer, so we're like, cool, yeah, we'll do this, and uh. The rest of it was at this punk house that was just gross, Like, no, it felt like a college co op. Oh, no, granola on the floor. Oh. I had to use the bathroom, and the bathroom was clearly just someone's bathroom, Like the only plason dryer hands was somebody's towel, which I didn't use to use. It just like felt like someone's house. And the ground was so dirty and we have no we have this sketch where we eat bread off the ground. Mm hmmm, fortunately playing pigeons. We're playing uh, not to spoil it, but it's a pigeon feeding us old people bread. Basically. People really like it. They're like, oh my god, that was so clever, and we're like, okay, it's it's a fun it's a fun one to be a part of. But last night was just gross. No, and I won't even go into it more because it was so gross. But afterward, my roommate and I we were supposed to stay and see the main act do the puppets, and it just kept going and we were like, we have to leave and we got home and we gargled vodka and took hot showers. Oh wow, that's how gross it all felt. It felt exploitative and then physically disgusting, like I just was like, am I getting a rash? Like this doesn't feel right. On the bright side, life is about experiences and knowing what you do and don't enjoy and m you.
Collected some data. I collected some data.
Also. I forgot to mention there was one act that was like prime time for this sort of venue, which was just somebody like eating spaghetti and making noises of.
Like yeah, yeah, total experiment. Anyway, sometimes you say the word sometimes an artist will say, we'll put the word experimental in front of their to just say yeah, when really it's it's just bad.
That's what it was. It was crazy that we were the most professional act there. We were absolutely we were the most like we were like, oh, this is not where we should be, but anyway.
This feels very It was going to be similar to the film where again learning from what we see in the movies, where in the movies La and Your Twenties is so in somebody's house.
Yeah, grunge.
Whatever I used to do improv practice at my friend's house that was a condemned property and it was like out in the shed in the back.
Oh yeah, because so you need just a space anywhere, even if it's.
Condemned, even if it's condemned. And speaking of condemned, Yes, Sienna, why, I don't know, could you please get us the synopsis of the movie Scream. Yes, yeah, Oh gosh, how did we want this? I don't know how this happened.
Scream a slasher kind of parody. Yeah, yes, parody. I guess. They reference other scary movies a lot and have meta conversations about tropes that are actually occurring on screen. We don't know who the killer is or who the next victim might be. A killer in a spooky Mask is terrorizing a suburban town, particularly fixating on a girl named Sid whose mother died brutally one year prior. Courtney Cox is the reporter the end.
Yes, I love that. Speak about the women in a get out of It.
I'm sure this was a phenomenon at the time because it was yeah, you know, talking about horror, rethinking horror, I guess, but it was still super misogynistic and.
Oh yeah, it was so very a movie written in nineteen ninety whatever by a guy, directed by a guy who were both being like, no, we're commenting on sexism. Yeah, and it's like the but you're commenting on it by just doing it outwardly.
This is the movie that probably said bitch more than any movie we've watched.
They just kept saying it, yeah, nips out and saying bitch.
If there was a woman on screen, someone was calling her a bitch. It was crazy. It was so crazy.
How did we watch this? Well, thank god, thank god we get to tear down another film, because we've been kind of just costen. Life has been too good to us recently, film wise, not overall, not outside of movies.
Well, oh boy, Leona, shall we get into our phone notes. This is a little part of the podcast where we talk about the notes we took on our phones while watching the film. Oh baby, you wanted to spend many because I wasn't.
I was like hardly looking at this. Oh, Sienna, you wrote hate watching this alone. Oh I didn't realize you were alone.
I literally got back from this event. I took a shower. I now feel incredibly clean. I haven't like scrubbed so from from everything feels clean, and uh, I got into my bed and I went, okay, time to watch a movie.
And then I went, okay, god, oh god alone and at night as well, in my mind, you are always surrounded by two to seven other people.
And that actually is true. Yeah, that is true most of the time. But it was night and everyone was asleep. But it was nice. It was nighttime. Leanna, you said, huge justification for a generation being terrified of phone calls. That is so true. They make the phone so scary.
The phone ringing. Is that the reaction point, the reaction that the people in the inn scream have to the phone ringing is the exact same as the reaction that I have in real life to the phone ringing, where for them they're like, I'm gonna get murdered by a murderer, but for me, I'm like, I'm gonna have to speak to someone on the phone and there's nothing scarier. Yeah, it is so so I resonated with.
That just now. Also, my roommate opened the door and handed me a cup of coffee, which is very adorable. Speaks to there're always being people. Second of all, I'm so on edge right now.
Oh my god, did you jump.
Yeah.
I watched mine in the Bride of Day, which helped, but I was also alone.
Okay, I mean, I'm always you have a roomy.
I know. I haven't seen them in days though, because they've been catsitting.
Is your boyfriend a weird guy who just sounds like a murderer? Trust your instincts on this one. We'll be right back. Okay, we've both said something very similar, which I guess is the point we've both noted. As you said, Billy is the murderer.
Oh, oh my god, yes, you said, Okay, obviously it's Billy. Did you know that as soon as he showed up in him?
Yes, yes, this guy was so scary and weird. Girl is so weird.
He was so hot.
I kept thinking every now and then I'd go, is this Johnny Depp?
He did have a Johnny depth energy? Hi? He I think he then was on Riverdale.
Oh, he looks like someone that man does have a very beautiful face, and he's a hattie.
He he was so nineties hot, and I was like, he is the murderer, but unfortunately he's still incredibly hot.
He was so scary and they kept obviously trying to make him scary, but then they would. I think there were moments where they were trying to make him a little bit more like, oh is he or is he not? But he never seemed caring. He was just really weird the whole time.
Well, yeah, that's true. That's the other thing where it was like, oh, this was written by a man who's not experienced empathy. I don't think because and I get that it's the genre of like a parody of a horror film, or like a meta horror film, so everybody's even more emotionally clocked out than they would be in even just a standard horror movie. But it was crazy. He's like, your mom died a year ago. I think you should be over it by can you get over it now so that we can bone or her friend who is meant to be staying with her because somebody just got viciously murdered and she's home alone, and her friend is like, sorry, I'm running late. I'm also gonna stop by the video store on the way. There is no way to change up for me to know what was parody and what wasn't in this, because I know, yeah, for example, them being like two years ago, we used to have a really hot, sexy relationship and you're like.
When you were sixteen, like what.
I know, I know.
It.
And I think it was hard to tell what was parody because the movie wasn't funny.
Yeah, exactly when I was looking up I was looking up the cast and saw some of their summary and it said it was like it wakes up the slasher slasher genre by being very clever and funny, and I was like, wait, what, wait what? When is that what that was supposed to be? Is that what was supposed to be? When? Who? According to homst.
I not us, not the viewers.
The guys, the guys who ended up being the murderers were just really creepy sometimes and at the end you go, oh, yeah, of.
Course they were the murderers. Obviously, these two men are murderers.
These were the two worst men in the movie. And by the way, it was not satisfying to see two horrible guys just be horrible to the end.
No and then stab each other like a little bit.
I hated it so much. I don't like that.
I didn't enjoy it. None of it was good. I The only thing that was like keeping me going through was there's an element of like murder mystery, Yeah, who done it? I was like, oh, that's a little like I wonder who it was. But then it just was the guy that we both knew it was.
I know.
I was like, oh no it was. I got why it I get why it was famous because it was like well constructed. I think probably in terms of yes, there was mystery, and then there were a couple of other plots going on, like Courtney Cox is doing her thing. Uh huh, she's a She's just a compelling actress.
I like, watch She's so beautiful.
She's so beautiful. The hair in this movie was unbelievable, and her outfits. Her outfits really kept me going, yeah, yeah, we we're hanging on by a thread.
And that thread was Courtney Cox's outfits.
Yeah. It's hard not to just look at her face and go wow wow.
I really was in awe.
Yeah me too. Whenever she was on screen, I was going, oh, wow, Leanna, you've said something important. You've said Henry Winkler, Yeah what. That man is very lovable. He has really made a little career for himself. It's weird. I never watched Happy Days, but I know what the Fawns's deal was m you know, beloved cool guy, beloved cool guy. But now I feel like he's such a different character than what I'd imagine the fawns being.
You know, it's a little sweety pie.
He's a little sweety pie.
Yeah, yeah, that's all I've ever known him as the sweet, dadish character. This was This movie was weird. You know, the guy who was falsely accused of murdering her mom. And we see for one second in a clip from the news, Oh that was Schreiber. What that was a famous actor, Leev Schreiber. That was TV's Ray Donovan.
I wonder if he comes back in future movies.
I guess nope, or maybe, like what's happening? I feel like we're just we're just removed enough from the pop culture of this time because we didn't grow up with it, because we're famously and wonderfully young. Yeah, any sort of waiting they were trying to do with the audience by being like, oh, it's the guy from Scooby Doo, or it's like Lee of Schreiber, we didn't get it because it's like, wait, I know it has not stood the test of time, obviously in the misogyny way, but also just didn't like whatever they were trying to do with the cleverness.
Yeah, I don't actually know what they were spoofing, unfortunately, I do think they were setting themselves up for a franchise for sure.
My guess is it was pitched is like this can go on forever totally. Hollywood was like, I love that.
Because they did. They did make sure to set up so you had no idea who it was. Everybody seemed so evil or people seemed suspect, and they made sure all of them had a different thing, Like one of them's like it could be a woman you don't know, and then one of them is like no, super knowledgeable about movie facts. Yeah, and they keep.
Talking different stuff from like a Freddy Krueger or Jason thing where that's like one guy who keeps somehow coming back where this it's like, oh, ghost face could be whoever's in the silly little gam What I'm curious about is like, what was like scres sixom that came out last year, you know, yeah, Scream six.
Of course, I feel like their little formula, their little formula is it could be anybody, and they don't have to make it really clever because the point is is that it's.
Can't contain the same misogyny that the first one did. Right, Surely it's evolved.
They said the B words so many times.
I like to think she's got a finger on the pulse. I think she's kind of just our generation's Scream Queen scris sixm quis Sixen Sienna. You've written whose house is this? What age is she?
This was at the beginning with Drew Barrymore. I think I heard things about Scream. What I've heard about Scream is I think is it was it just the Drew Barrymore thing or like one of the surprises is that they have a big celebrity at the beginning who you'd think would be a big part of it because they put her on the cover, but she gets killed right away. It's shocking, and then it's very meta, which it was kind of meta, yeah, and then it's always a surprise at the end in some way who it is. I think I know about one other. I thought this is a major spoiler.
Great.
I think that Billy's mom is the killer in one of them, because he talks about her being gone and at the beginning they talk about actually it was Jason's So I thought she was going to be the killer in this one, but then yeah, so that's why I think they set up all for the sequels and stuff, and it's always just like a big surprise, who to thok type of thing.
Yeah, but it's also awful. You're always suspicious of them. Yeah, so it's hard to surprise us with oh yep, yes men, I know I was.
So it really was another time because now now commenting on a trope and things are like flipping the switch. It would never just be the bad guy because we assume the bad heartless men are going to be the heartless ones, and in that way, maybe it was more honest at the end when it was them, it was two guys, two heartless men, cornering this woman. It was so chilling.
Yeah, it was a thing that's so grim and I don't know how we're gonna bounce back from it, Yes, but we will have to. I also epithy, Yes, I have a heart out.
Yeah.
The scariest part of this movie for me was the ending where it's revealed that the killers are two teenage boys and they're kind of bouncing off each other, going back and forth and genuinely. What it reminded me of was when I was in middle school, a guy who went to Columbine High School came and gave a talk to our class about the shooting at and they played video footage of the two boys who were the shooters, whoa that they had recorded before going and murdering people. And it reminded me so much of these two boys at the end of the screen. And that I don't think is commentary that the creator was attempting to do, but that is just because that.
Is incredible scary, that is incredibly grim. But also I think exactly why this didn't feel satisfying to me. It just felt really scary. In fact. Yeah, my final notes, which are we could talk about just right now, are like, uh, I was just like, this is so scary and I hate this, and I don't know if I can keep watching stuff like this because it just makes me feel so bad. And also, if we're being honest and grim, there are so many evil, horrible things. There is an active genocide happening right now, and to see people just be flippant with human lives. Yeah, this Halloween is not like this.
It's not like a fun thing.
Yeah, especially because you know, a lot of the ways that they're able to mobilize horrors happening, and it's happening that there's many, many things going on right now in the world that are so scary and so horrific, and it feels so helpless to not be able to stop them. You know that a lot of the ways that they're able to mobilize people is by just like getting teenage boys to you know, like egg each other on. Yeah. So it was just very, very terrifying and didn't feel good. And it ended and I'm like, yeah, well you got it. You did it. Yeah, And like you said yesterday, like you said, it did not feel like that was the commentary they were trying to make.
No no at work yesterday, Oh my got it worked yesterday. A male colleague was like, oh, yeah, I do. I was reading about this guy, the male bomb, who turns out is the unabomber from the US. He's like, I watched the documentary on him, and I he just really had some like points, some good points, huh. I was really sympathized with his like philosophy. Somebody told you it is like, sir, I am so afraid that you have access to the internet. You should not.
Somebody came to work and shared that, Yeah, that's and what's so scary is he's like thirty something teenage boys on the internet are getting radicalized so easily, and it's such a real and terrifying issue.
It's and it's not getting better.
The strength of a person and the brain of a sponge.
Yeah, well, oh, Siena, you wrote, okay, sparkly little robe.
Did you notice this?
Of course I noticed this.
I love the murderers.
The silly little costume was a little sparkly.
The murderers are wearing a scream mask and then a sparkly little robe.
A sparkly little gown. I have no idea what I got say, uh huh. Ghost Faith is a little silly. Yes, Like when he would just poke his head out of the woods and kind of slink about. I was laughing, and I get I didn't know if they were trying to make me laugh, but I was laughing, Yeah, because what a silly little guy. Or when he like knocks on the window of the car to get her attention and then jingles the keys to be like I got them, I get them. He's like a little prankster.
Leana, you said, big mood to nap when it's light out, but you wake up and it's dark.
Yes, that was the second spookiest part of the film.
Too relatable.
Mm hmm, so disoriented. Does it get dark really early in the UK? Yeah, and it's about to get worse. British summertime is about to end, which means it's like fall daylight, say time. Yeah, and it's the sun's gonna set at like four pm.
Wait does the summer end later there?
No, they just call it.
What's what they call it?
Okay, like when the US springs forward? Yeah, we enter British summertime. It's not exactly the same. It's like off by a couple of.
British summer time. Yeah. Have you heard about the mail bomber? It's my impersonation. I'm so afraid of men. Oh god, Leanni said, do men actually high five when they see boobs? I don't understand anything about them? Like, what was the joke? I don't know, I don't know.
That's the thing that was so annoying about this was like, even if you're commenting on men being like stupid and high fiving when they see boobs, all that happened was men were stupid and high fived when they saw boobs bait. The one thing I will give the movie is that there wasn't actually on screen boob at any point.
Thank god, thank god. I was so afraid they were gonna be like, boo, you always see boobs and then it's boobs.
Yeah, yeah, dude, I am still I get so angry when I think about Oppenheimer and the fact that I am become death destroyer of worlds. Was said, well, the only thing on screen was boobs.
I hate art men make so bad. It's so dumb. I'm so tired of pretending it. It deserves a space. Yeah, so tired of it. I randomly watched Carrie. My roommates watched Carrie the other day. Wow, we cannot watch it. It did. It erased so many things for women's rights. It was crazy.
Oh no.
The movie literally starts with her washing her boobs off nakedly. They all play volleyball, and then she takes she's taking a shower and she's literally like washing her boob. No.
I would never ever have thought that happened.
Me neither and Carrie.
I was like, oh yeah, like little the innocent nerd girl gets blood dumped on her. I would never have thought me washing boobs. It was like men, all men should be arrested.
What is happening. It's so terrifying that there was just like a time where they're like, yeah, make whatever you want, and they're like, really I could do that, and everyone's like yeah, of course. And by the time, I mean, it's still like that.
The seventies, yeah, forever.
The seventies was very hardcore in this way where they're like, what if we just sort of like make teenagers be naked. They're like, yeah, okay, I couldn't believe what. I could not believe it. I hadn't seen it.
Yeah, I think that's a good.
Anytime I see a movie that is like too famous, I'm like, oh, we women's rights are in a worse place than I even thought.
Oh, isn't that That's really what seasons one and two of this podcast hops.
Yeah, we were like, oh, we've been feeling scared and bad about it, and we've just found the proof and it's so much actually worse. It's not actually hidden. It's the stuff you guys are still excited about, and what are we to do with that.
Hey, we're just gonna step out to the garage to get some beers. We'll be right back.
Oh, never say you'll be right back.
If you I you noted something you said? Damn literally, no one noticed. Is this about the girl who dies in the cat door?
Yes?
I would be so mad if I died in a gruesome way nobody didn't. Nobody noticed, And then other people also died in a gruesome way. Yeah, I'd be like, sorry, could this just be about me? Actually, Drew Barrymore got a whole thing and a whole news report.
Yes, she died in the worst way and no one Well, her boyfriend obviously was one of them.
Hey, oh that's why he wasn't concerned.
And then her brother was the cop. Oh yeah, and I guess it's good he never saw her because that was horrible.
But yeah, what the hell?
Yeah that was How'd you feel about Dewey.
He was the cop. I didn't have strong opinions on any of the characters.
Yeah, that's well, that's for the belly was so hot, too bad, Just like.
He reminded me a lot of the guy from Heathers the Musical. Not to tell him. I don't like the film, but the musical I have seen a bootleg of Okay, But the difference is the guy in Heather's actually loves his girlfriend and and it's like, I'm doing this all for you, so like he's still doing some really fucked up.
Yeah, it would have been. Actually, I get that they made it good. That was the point. They're like, we're crazy, we don't have a motive. That's what's so scary about it. That's what we're referencing. But and then also it's like, your mom was a slut. They literally managed to say this mom was a slut, that she said seduced men, and that she was horribly brutally assaulted all in one, like every single thing that felt misogynistic and horrible without ever showing her and they killed her off screen.
M hm.
And that's the places where you're like, I get, you know, if if the if the bad men who listened to our podcast long ago still listen to it, they would be like that was referencing it. The fact that she was murdered, was referencing horror films.
Yeah, but I don't know if it was.
Really or it's not. Whatever levels. It maybe went one level, but there were so many levels above it of misogyny that I don't think it was even aware of.
Oh yeah, well, should we just move on to badges and tragiu Oh my gosh, because I think I think we're there.
I think it's time fantastic, let's do it.
Mainly, I got a heart out. Oh my gosh, you're in here as anonymous raccoon.
That's me.
Welcome everyone to badges and trages, where we award badges for blingy little gown yeah, and tradges for trusting a bad boyfriend.
Yeah.
Yeah, I have a badge for Courtney Cox's looks in cred I. Oh, she looks so good.
Do you like her as a performer?
I think I've seen all of Friends, and I thought she was really fun as Monica in Friends. I don't know what I've seen her in besides that.
I think her main big things are that and this ah and then Coopertown. Oh yeah, badge for I really have no idea who it is. It seems like Billy. That's what I wrote because I thought maybe it wouldn't be Billy when I wrote that, right, But yeah, but it is the it's the element of mystery, I guess that's the one thing.
I have a badge for the line my name isn't Jesus. Somebody says to a guy, Jesus, hurry up, and he replies, my name isn't Jesus. Badge for a double bed that was, or the two beds. Oh my god, those beds were unhinged. That was so cute. It was like something out of the shining.
It was so spooky.
I might have adable, but I know there's twins in it. Well similar I have a badge for a pajama set.
Yes, yeah, totally loved that badge for Henry Winkler, Hello, thank you for being here.
Oh, a badge for OMG did not realize the costume is sparkly.
Sort of love that funny. I love that. I wish every single horror character ever you have a close up and they're actually wearing just like a little bit of a little bit of glamour, a little bit of glitter.
Something in there just for them.
Yeah, exactly. Freddy Krueger's nails are painted badge for uh. At one point, the friend says to her boyfriend, who ends up being the killer. She says, stupidity leak, stupidity leak and I thought that was funny, funny, I know it was cute.
I have a badge for the line reading that Shaggy from live action Scooby Doo does where the video store guys like, do you think you should go out with me? And the guy goes no, I don't, yeah at all.
No badge for as you said, Courtney Cox's outfits. I cannot express enough. That has to be my main badge from this movie. The one thing that made me go, wow, I'm glad I'm looking at the screen right now was Courtney Cox's UF.
My final badge is a badge for Tostitos. They buy a bag.
Okay, they buy a.
Bag of Tostito's chips at one point, and I said.
Yeah, brand you love, that's my brand.
Do they have that the Tostitos? They don't have my fave, which is the Tostido's hint of Lime, the best chip in the history of humankind.
Wow, wow, that's all. My badge is fantastic trages. Do you have any Oh.
God, yeah, I mean the whole damn mood.
Yeah, it was kind of a joke. It was horrible. Leanna, you go first.
I have a trage for men should not say I'm hitting the sack as a way of saying I'm going to bed.
Don't say sack.
Don't say don't say that to me.
Uh. Trage for damn fat phobic. Yeah, Courtney Yoks's line where she's like, I know you're fifty pounds overweight, but next time, get your fat tubble art ass over blah blah blah blah. I was like, whoa gold damn. Oh, it was really aggressive. It was so nineties.
I had a trage for oh man, it's Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Yeah, and that is because my flatmate was trying to remember screaming was like, oh, I think one of the guys from Scooby Doo is in it. And I was like, oh, Freddy Prince Junior.
I At first when we were watching it, I was like, was this fred And then I realized it was Shaggy. No, it would be fun if Freddy Prince j was in this.
He's beautiful. I love looking at him. He's beautiful. Shaggy's a little freak.
Tragh for the word bitch dot dot dot used a lot. Yeah, it's hard to express just how many times that word is said. And at first you go, oh that kind of Oh I don't like to hear that. He they just keep saying it and so wow, they just this is what they just thought. This is they see a woman and they think bitch, bitch.
Yeah, trag for a very very like offhand and like only used to move the plot forward mention of sexual assault and specifically like throwing the R word that's related to it around a lot, which is I don't know if people know this, it's very triggering word to just hear.
So yeah, the fact that they were.
Just using it as like a trope to play on was very disgusting, completely completely.
That's the mom character was so.
Yeah, it was just like okay, yeah, a man who has not had any experience with assault of this kind wrote this. Yeah, and that's the place where and even if that's if that's not true, Oh my god, he did a bad job.
Yeah. The it's just very violent on a level where you know, it's not trying to comment, you know, or it's not not trying to be helpful. Yeah that was awful.
Yeah, there was no like humanity or gentleness towards women.
It wasn't. Yeah, a lot of it's like well, it's supposed to be brutal, and it just felt awful. Yeah, trage for littering. At one point, someone just throws a bag of chips out the window.
I thought there was gonna be some sort of like payoff to that, but he just littered.
The two thousands was a very unloving time. It was a very unloving time in the culture.
Yeah, oh my god, a trage for I don't know if I want to even use this term because it could be triggering for those who have suffered struggled with eating disorders, that phrase that they use.
You also noted it. Yeah, she describes herself as sexually anorexices, and I was like, what the hell.
I sat there afterward, and I was just like, what could that mean?
It's that face we make when we're so confused by something a man has done and we're trying to just like.
Can I be I mean, I think it's I think we all can agree it's sort of best to just pretend the two thousands didn't happen, because going and watching the arc from them.
Is just it's not good.
Except Mama Mia, that's twenty ten's is it? In my mind? Okay? Two thousands feels like late nineties, early two thousands kind of vibe. Just any man movie from any part of time. Trage for just the kind of as violence and brutality that just makes me sad. Yeah, when you take all the you know, it's like, oh, this is thrilling, this is what it just it got to the point where I just felt sad. Like you said, the brutal vocabulary they use, no my phone to the thumbs up, the brutal vocabulary they use, and then just the flippancy with which they hurt people, and the idea that to be fun to watch people get hurt. Yeah, you might think I'm a little sensitive, and guess what I am. And also we don't live in time. Yeah, I care about people. I care about my fellow man.
A trage for when the best friend is going to get the beers from the garage. You know she's about to get killed because you can see her nipples through her shirt.
I hated that so much. Yeah, I hated that. Those are all the trages I wrote down. Those are all the trages I wrote down. Great, perfect, Well, let's move back on.
God, how did this get on the list. Don't Maybe somebody put it on and was like, you two will hate it. It'd be fun to hear your take. Yeah, maybe that was it.
I sure hope. So, I sure hope we didn't write it down thinking it was something else, which is incredibly possible. I I don't know.
I do think maybe we meant to watch scary movies.
I don't know what scary movie sounds too scary?
Oh, well, scary movie I know is a parody.
Oh, Scream is popular. I guess.
Well, this is our segment. How to pretend you've seen this film?
This is for you.
Are uh doing your news report? Yeah, live on on air.
Billy comes up to you and says, hey, we all go a little mad sometimes.
That's from the film Psycho, which is one of the thousands of films that I've watched.
I just want to tell you because you're a woman here and I feel that I can just come up and say whatever to you. I want to talk about Halloween movies, especially my favorite one, Scream, because it's not just a scary movie. It's a movie that's very funny commenting on other movies. I have called it clever, and I'm gonna tell you all about it right now while you're trying to.
Do your job, and in order to stop Billy from broadcasting, we're gonna give you a few sentences you could say to pretend you've seen the film Scream. Yeah, Billy, I've seen Scream. A fact that you probably don't even know is that in the initial Girls room in Sydney's room, there's an Indigo Girls poster. Oh and do you know who would love that, Comedian tig Notaro, who's a huge fan of the Indigo Girls. Yay, now get out of my broadcast.
Ugh, yes, Billy, I have seen the film Scream. It is a tragically nineties slash two thousands experience. I guess it's late nineties. Is a tragically late nineties experience. One piece of trivia that supports this tragic nature is Courtney Cox approached the production to pursue the role because she was interested in playing a quote bitch character to offset her quote nice friend's image. I mean, she did greatness, but these characters that there are for women, it's either nice or bitch. I just hate how brainwashed women had to be at the time too to be like, well, those are the roles available, So I'd like to be a bitch, please, call me a bitch.
Yeah, one bitch pleased. Yes, Billy, I've seen Scream. We are live on air.
I have to ask you.
What are you doing with a cellular telephone?
Sun? Oh my gosh, Yes, Billy, I have seen the film Scream. Fun fact, the use of caller ID increased more than threefold after the release of this film.
It must it was. It must have just been massive. Yeah, this movie was really massive at the time. Maybe this colater the Classic or something whatever was going on with horror. I think it did something new, do.
You know what?
I bet what? I I love not doing historical context anymore because instead I could just guess. Yeah, I bet there was kind of like a a lull in slasher movies. Yeah, I think that's exactly the genre, but also was a meta commentary on it at the same time. It's back baby and we still hate women.
You let's go. Leanna just perfectly summed up everything about this film.
That is exactly right.
By the way, the words you used to explain what you think it was were what the Google summary said, Oh my god, like almost word for word, and I goad okay. Fun fact. This film was originally titled Scary Movie which was later used for another parody that included it was also a parody of this movie. Yeah, but they talk about scary movies so much in this film.
Yeah, I think also, I just don't give a hoot about scary movies. So when they were doing their meta commentary on the other ones, I was like, Yeah, I know these tropes.
I just don't care. I know me neither.
I don't need to go watch a man kill people that happens every day.
I don't enjoy the movie that genre.
Yes, Billy, I've seen Scream. And why did you also ask me my age at the same time as bringing up a film to me while I'm live on air. Well, I'll tell you I'm twenty five. I was twenty four for a whole year.
I was twenty four for a whole year. Here's a fun one that'll be our last. Uh. Yes, yes, Billy, I have seen the film Scream. Henry Winkler, isn't it And when he shut the closet door, there's a Phonsie jacket in there. And also when he looks back in the mirror, he's fixing his hair Phonsie style.
Hey, I wonder if you can notice them when he pokes his head out into the hallway. The janitor's dressed as Freddy Krueger.
That's why he was dressed so weird. No, I know what that was. I don't really know.
Yeah, that's saw that like red striped shirt and some sort of like a hat or something.
Leanna. I said to myself, was that guy like supposed to be like a fisherman or like a like a pirate type of thing? I almost wrote that down. I'm so dumb. We're not meant for this. Why are we doing this? I meant for this world? Oh well, Leanna show, we move on to our segment. Should you watch this or we tell you if you should watch this movie or if if you should do anything else? Leanna, what would you say?
No, No, you don't need to watch Scream. I'm gonna do something a little unhinged, okay, and recommend a film I have not seen. Okay, but if you wanted to watch like a body horror film to get your spooky one and to see some stuff that's gross, Yeah, you could watch the substance, Yes, question mark.
Yeah.
Do we still stand by that it does contain a man who literally spoke at a Trump rally yeah, because Dennis Quaid is insane. Yeah, but it's is it written by a woman?
Yeah, we know it's is written by a woman and directed by a woman. And people keep having problems with it. And every problem I've heard with it are people saying that they think it's being reductive and things, Uh, and you're not reductive. They think it's being derivative, and that they think it's not very I think people are ignoring the complexity of it because a woman made it. If I'm being extremely honest, and hell, sometimes I feel small and nervous saying that because I go, maybe I'm overreacting about sexism. Well, guess what, seeing movies like this that all of you people like I can now confirm sexism is alive. And well, you like screaming, you don't like the substance, will screw you?
Yeah, get Fuckedana. What would you say?
I would say, if you want to watch a movie that's very flippant about killing, you could watch Lisa Frankenstein. Oh, which was a lot more fun. Yeah, and just yeah, it's it's poking back at genres, et cetera, et cetera. And it is so written and directed by a woman, written and directed by women, and it's just I just can only watch scary things made by women because they understand what's scary.
Yeah, which is And if you watch Lisa Frankenstein, you can then go watch our response to it on our patreot.
I look and if you'd like to be scared by that?
And I looked so pale? Oh yeah, I remember, it's all coming back. Well, well, Sienna, what would you rate the film Scream?
I didn't like it. I never want to watch anything like this again. I get what it's doing. I get what it's doing. I get right if my friends have fun watching it, I don't like incredibly judge them. I don't really care. Yeah, like point five out of ye five. Yeah, I might give this film point five, Oh god, point five spooky phone calls out of five, Leanna, what about yourself?
I will give Scream one sparkly gown out of five. Courtney Cox is so beautiful, and I thought she did a good job. And I loved the gorgeous mountain this region of California. It was very gain that it was set in, and I loved that the gown was very sparkly. It was and Billy was so hot Billy was so hot unfortunately, so that really did keep me coming back. Wow, the rest of it was terrible and bad for women's rights.
Well, Leanna, we've watched the movie Scream somehow on accident. Oh my god, that was such a good scream.
Thanks, I've never made that sound before.
