Finding the Core of a Melanated Woman

View descriptionShare

To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th, Today I Am Alive is dedicating the entirety of the month to some truly inspiring and incredible female voices, beginning with this week's guest, writer, and podcaster Najar Nyakio from Kenya, who joins Margaret to share her empowering tale of how she personally overcame trauma and learned to find the core of who she is.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Trauma can come in so many shapes and sizes. For Najar, it came in the form of never knowing who she truly was, and growing up in the shadow of a type of person she did not recognise.
  • We should always embrace the attitude that we are put onto this earth to empower and inspire. Never be afraid to let the wisdom and blessings of each day flow through us and out of us.
  • Trauma, in a way, can act as a blessing in disguise. It might be painful in the moment, but it can lead to enlightenment and inspiration for others.
  • Our menstrual cycle determines that each month we have to face up to debilitating pain. Our minds, mental state, our physical being, is geared towards pain or the anticipation of it. But we cannot let this define us, and there is a way to defy this excruciating, testing element of life.

BEST MOMENTS

'I am enjoying the fact that today I am alive'

'It was about stepping into a space where I had knowledge'

'I was placed on this magnificent earth to be the core of who I am to fulfil my purpose'

'The womb is at the very core of our beings'
