The self-help industry promises transformation, happiness, and success through simple formulas, positive thinking, five-step plans and the occasional sunset, fluffy puppy and unicorn. Yet beneath this shimmering surface lies a troubling reality: much of what passes for "self-help" is a hodgepodge of feel-good platitudes, pseudoscience, magical thinking and oversimplified solutions that can do more harm than good.
