#Sifelani Femicide Awareness Campaign; stand against femicide in SA

View descriptionShare

We Mattah NPC invites partners and the public to join the #Sifelani Femicide Awareness Campaign, an urgent initiative to confront the alarming rates of femicide in South Africa. This campaign aims to raise awareness, advocate for the reinstatement of the death penalty for femicide, and demand justice for victims through a national march and a comprehensive communications effort. Marches will take place in Gauteng and the Western Cape, with partner organizations participating in other regions. Having Launched yesterday and running until November 2024, the campaign will align with key dates like Women’s Day on August 9 and the 16 Days of Activism beginning on November 25, 2024.

The statistics are stark: nearly 40% of women will be raped in their lifetime, with only 1 in 9 rapes reported. In the 2022/2023 fiscal year, 53,500 women reported being sexually assaulted, with 80% of these cases being rapes. Tragically, nearly 11 women are murdered every day, often by someone they know. The murder rate for women has risen from 10 per 100,000 in 2021 to 13 per 100,000 in 2023. The time to act is now. Join us in saying "it stops here" and ask, #Sifelani? (Why are we dying?). Show your support by signing our petition, which will be delivered at the end points of our marches.

We Mattah NPC is dedicated to addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide through advocacy, education, and support for victims.
