What Are Apolipoproteins?

View descriptionShare

When assessing risk for cardiovascular disease, most clinicians focus on the concentration of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) also known as ‘bad’ cholesterol, and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or ‘good’ cholesterol. Though this information is helpful, it’s only part of the picture when it comes to risk. Apolipoproteins are surface proteins found on all cholesterol molecules. They not only contribute to cholesterol structure, but also help to regulate enzymes responsible for lipid metabolism, assist in reverse cholesterol transport, and direct the distribution of fuel throughout the body.

In today’s episode, we discuss apolipoproteins, their function, and why measuring them can be a game-changer when it comes to cardiovascular risk assessment.
