Queensland Assistant coach Josh Hannay believes moving Pat Carrigan and Jeremiah Nanai will provide the Maroons with a boost on the bench in game two.
Queensland will be fighting to save the series after going down to New South Wales in the series opener at sun Corp Stadium. The Continuous Call team will be over there at Opta Stadium to call the action. I thought we'd check in with Camp Morone for the latest on their preparations and I'm pleased to say One of their assistant coaches, Josh Hannay, joins us on the line from Perth. Josh, good afternoon to you, mate.
Hey, good afternoon. It's unbelievable to be talking to you.
Like head start on me.
Now, Josh, not long Togo got anything on Josh by the way, No, he's a great man, he is.
You weren't saying that before, you said, well.
Back back in the day we used to knock around together for I bet you did your beers every now and then.
How's the week beating Camp? How the preparations coming along, Josh?
Really smooth. We got over here on Friday, traveled over a little bit early than we have in the past. We've obviously done have a great record here, so we needed to look at our preparation and anything we could possibly do a little bit differently. So yeah, he got over a bit early than we have normally. We've literally just come off the training field. It's a good session. Everyone's come through. So yeah, no complaints for that preparation.
Hey, Josh, it must be good, good feeling for the coaching staff when you can give someone their taboo, and especially someone like Kurt Man who at his age later back end of his career, he's going to get an opportunity Wednesday night.
Yeah. He's a great story, a story and I guess perseverance, resilience. He's a guy that's bounced around in the NRL for a number of years at different clubs. He's been a bit of a utility here, there and everywhere, and he's really found he's home there at the Bulldogs and I guess made a name for himself there for the way he's played, and he's and the way he does play. That's the tough nature about which he gave his business. We just I really feel like it it's going to be suited to the Origin arena. I know he's thirty two, and you know, I guess when you get to that age, people can think you're past his prime. But I feel like I feel like he's really coming into his own as a football I made, and we feel really really good about what he can bring to the team on Wednesday.
Yeah, it's amazing what a club team can do for these guys like man who's been fantastic for the Doggers this year and winning teams winning, you're in the shop window a lot more. And what about you guys come Wednesday, Joshi, they're predicting a week in Perth will affect your play at all. We change your game plan if it is raining on Wednesday night.
Yeah, it's a good point, MG. And you know, there's a little bit of weather around. I hope maybe by the time the game rolls around, the sort of weather is cleared a little bit. But yeah, certainly if we're in the midst of some bad weather out there, I think it only puts a spotlight on the need to do the simple things even better. They you know, you need to execute those no matter what weather. And I think that's where we certainly got beat in Game one was the Blues ability to do the simple things really well for longer. But yeah, there's a little bit of weather around made that that only reinforces the need to control the football discipline with your defense all the boring things, but the really important things and the kicking game just comes into it, probably even more so so. It'll it'll it'll certainly have a bearing. I think if if there is a little bit of weather around make Ma.
We all watched the first game in the Queensland is probably a bit disappointing. They probably never really looked like winning the game. But I thought, two, are you a better players in game one with Nana and Carrigan? And I'd say they're both on the bench. I'm not going to ask you to say whether they'll start on the bench or not. But I was just a bit I was a little bit surprised by that.
Yeah, I think to your point, Daryll, I think you know, we didn't have many guys if any of that played to their potential in that in that first game, and a lot of it was down to guys trying to do things on their own. I think we really got beat in that area. I think we've you're play an opponent where they really do a lot a lot of things well together and we were probably guilty of trying to, as I say, sold things on our own. And I guess you know, the decision around pattern Jeremiah wasn't. I know, it might look like we've singled those two guys out, but as I say, I don't think we had a particularly good player in the night We've possibly made it. It's more around the balance of our football side. I think it gives our bench a bit more potency, a bit more size, and I think if I can talk to Jeremiah, he's renowned for his ability with the ball, and I think it keeps him out of those opening exchanges and bring him on when the game opens up a little bit. I think it'll allow him to not get sort of almost grinded out of the game. You know, he can come on and opened up a little bit and really play to his strengths, and we can bring his strength into the game maybe a little bit easier. So I think it's just a little bit more around the balance. Big manswa to be really there.
Well that's what I thought originally, but I mean, you know, based on what you just said then the fact that Carrigan's on the bench as well, I mean I would have thought you'd want him out there at the start of the game because he is a brute. He's a hell of a player.
Yeah, he is he is. Again, I think without going into too much detail specific so I do you know, had a good look at our forward pack and I had a good look at everything. To be really honest, we had to and one of the things that come out of it was again, what's the best balance for our football side? There the guys who are going to go out there and get us into a scrap and then guys that can come off the bench and I guess keep us in that fight and perhaps if we've started really well, actually put us over the edge and get us on top. So again it's tough. They're always tough decisions, but they're certainly made with a lot of consideration.
Marn't you.
What's the preparation like now for you blokes?
I think you said earlier that you'd just come off the training field.
You what's the leading like now for you guys?
Yes? And now the boys will get a little bit of downtime, they'll have the afternoon to their own devices and tomorrow is an offday for them. So up to this point got in a lot of work, got in a lot of work back in Queensland before we came here. We've trained yesterday, trained today, so now it's about film refilling up their tanks, probably getting away from it a little bit mentally and physically before we switched back on Tuesday, made and really start to ramp up again for the game, just.
From an outsiders perspective. And I don't know the answer to this. So the boys in this day and age take their wives and girlfriends into camp or is that doesn't happen? It never used to happen in my day? Does that happen these days?
May not that I'm aware, I've I haven't seen any of the partners around the hotel. They may well be over here and staying somewhere else and the boys might gat up.
That's what God is alluding to. Big Dog's got a week, mate, Big Dog's got a week?
Question, Well, yeah, we might let you go there, Josh. Before there's any more dramas here from this full of that's going to bring everyone down here. But good luck on Wednesday night, mate, it's going to be a cracker of a game.
Thanks you, Tom guys, Thank you mate.
Good luck dramas, Josh, Hannah. They're great coach boys as well.
