Each year, Deaf Awareness Month, observed in September, serves as a vital opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the Deaf community and promote inclusion and accessibility. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of early intervention in hearing health - particularly through newborn hearing screening. We speak to Nomfundo Mthethwa – mother of a deaf child, Mala Perumal - KZN coordinator of Hi Hopes, Professor Claudine Storbeck - associate professor at the Centre for Deaf Studies at Wits University and the director of Hi Hopes and Priya Pillay – Speech Therapist.
