She’s a talented dancer, rapper, home language officer in a local high school, president of the Filipino Australian Association of the NT, AND she’s a Mum of three! Connie Jape was born in a tiny village in East Timor and has 9 brothers and sisters. Her father was passionate about educating his kids. Two cultures, a shared history and a dream for the future

Darwin has been shaped by its connection to Indonesia for generations. In fact, it’s likely that annual fishing expeditions by Macassans from Indonesia to the Top End was the first ongoing contact between Aboriginal people and a foreign culture. Indonesian law student Nabila Majid, is proud of that history and shares stories of her family’s migration, and her own experiences of growing up as a young Muslim woman living and working in Darwin.

My name’s Nicole Brown. I’m a proud Larrakia woman and my people are the Traditional Owners of Darwin or Garamilla as we call it. Introduced by Chinese migrants in the 17th Century, they’ve become a symbol of this city’s unique multicultural community. 

Darwin or Garramilla, as the Larrakia Traditional Owners call it, is a city plonked right in the middle of the tropical Top End of Australia, closer to Asia than any Australian capital city. Famous for crocodiles, sunset markets and a big cyclone called Tracy, yet, there’s so much more to this place.

The city has a tumultuous past from a bombing attack in World War 2 to three big cyclones  - all of which left it in pieces. Over the decades, people from 100 different nationalities have migrated to this city, to re-build it, as they fell in love, grew families and created a place to call home.
