Twenty Home Affairs officials have been dismissed and sixteen others suspended. This following allegations of serious maladministration by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The investigation, which began in April 2024, focused on recurring schemes involving document fraud, visa and work permit manipulation and facilitation networks enabling unauthorized peoples entry into South Africa. This prompted the SIU to secure a Special Tribunal order to search five Refugee Reception Offices. With the assistance of the Hawks, investigators seized laptops, desktops, cell phones, external drives and suspicious files.
