The 64-dish MeerKAT telescope -- the largest and most powerful in the southern hemisphere -- has been launched at Carnarvon in the Northen Cape. Described by deputy president David Mabuza as a significant milestone in radio astronomy -- the MeerKAT will be the world's largest telescope of its kind until the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) has been completed.
