Tswelopele Correctional Centre in Kimberley in the Northern Cape has denied allegations of abuse and ill treatment of inmates. This after reports emerged of some inmates complaining to their relatives about being ill treated and forced to bathe with cold water amongst others. Head of Tswelopele Correctional Centre Hendrik Johannes says the prison is one of the few in the country that has an offender structure called participatory management, in which offenders are tasked with overlooking different units within the centre and directly liaising with management if there are any challenges…

The fraud case against Northern Cape's acting HOD for the health department, Dr. Deon Tuys has been postponed to the 9th of June this year, for pre-trial consultation. Tuys briefly appeared in the Kimberley magistrates court today. He was arrested by the Hawks earlier this month for allegedly contravening the Public Funds Management Act pertaining lease agreements of nursing homes amounting to 96 million rand in 2014. It is exactly a year since the Covid 19 National Disaster was declared. This led to the pronouncement of a national lockdown, which started with strict regulations. Most businesses were completely shut during the hard lockdown. Regulations were relaxed as the spread of Covid 19 was brought under control, but most businesses could not re-open as they could not survive for weeks without any cash flow. The country is currently under alert level one but nightclubs are still not allowed to operate. Night clubs in Kimberley have re-opened but are now operating as taverns

Sewage spilling into houses and shacks, and lack of basic services has led to Roodepan residents near Kimberley to go on a rampage.
