A retired neurosurgeon is undertaking a 7-thousand kilometer motorbike ride to the furthest parts of South Africa to raise funds to provide access to medical care to vulnerable children. Doctor Andre Hattingh started the 21-day mission in Oudtshoorn and is now in KwaZulu-Natal. His non-profit organisation - Pediatric Care Africa - aims to sign on two doctors in every small town to examine two children a year, free of charge.

The pressure on wild food sources in the ocean and on land has reached a point where it cannot sustain the world's population any longer. That's according to Durban-based chef, Johannes Richter. He believes that the use of sustainable agricultural methods can lessen the impact of people's food needs on nature.  Richter uses mostly locally grown heirloom crops, which are produced sustainably. Heirloom crops 'can help relief pressure on nature' - chef

A coalition of community organisations, NGOs and experts has presented a comprehensive plan for the eThekwini Municipality to start responding to climate change now. It's called The People's Plan for the Right to Housing in the Age of Climate Change. Work on the project began after the 2022 floods. The floods claimed 436 lives and caused about 17-billion rand worth of damage. The plan calls for residents to be involved in a rethink of the municipality's approach to climate change. Durban Coalition climate change plan calls for urgent action from city

An 18-year old quadriplegic and his father have a dream of making all South Africa's beaches accessible to the disabled. To raise funds for this, Reece Smith and his father, Wesley, organised the Waters Sweet Games during the festive season in Amanzimtoti. 
It will see people with disabilities taking part in sporting events together with able-bodied people. Dries Liebenberg reports . . .
