You’re five years old, and the world is at your feet.

You’re in the car with your eight-year-old bro, just picked up from childcare by your dad.

But your dad has a plan.

That plan involves two gas cylinders he’d strategically placed in the back seat earlier that day… and a cigarette. A horrific act of revenge. A father prepared to kill his two sons (and himself) to spite their mother. Not just to rob her of custody, but to take her children from her entirely.

Spencer Connelly doesn’t have to imagine this. It’s his life. A life he’s lucky to still be living. That man, his ‘father’ might be released from prison in the next 12 months. Because apparently, such a monstrous act only warranted a little over a decade behind bars.

Spencer is now 17. I just recorded a podcast with him after my dad met him at the grocery store and was enamoured by his spirited personality and kind demeanour. 

Turns out, he now attends the same school I did back in the day.

After an hour of banter, I can tell you this much… Spencer is a testament to the BEST of humanity.
