Upon meeting Sean Turnell, I can tell you first impressions sure don't conjure up an image of a prisoner. He's brimming with enthusiasm, optimism, and an undeniable zest for life. In fact, Sean had me somewhat perplexed at how he could be so cheerful as someone who had recently been thrown into one of Southeast Asia's most notorious prisons for 650 days (Myanmar), charged with being a spy and violating the country's official state secrets act.
A Sydney-born economist, Sean admits his comfortable academic background certainly didn't prepare him for the physical and mental conditions he was thrust into facing when he served 2ish of his 3-year sentence. We banter about the mental toolkit, the strategies and mindset that served Sean throughout his experience, and the impact of the media amidst the chaos.
I adored chatting with Sean, I hope you enjoy the conversation too!
