The renewed controversy over the United States and Greenland has unfolded against a backdrop of intensifying global competition in the Arctic, growing strain within Western alliances, and long-standing questions about sovereignty and self-determination. Donald Trump’s repeated suggestions that the United States should annex or otherwise take control of Greenland have moved the issue from a theoretical geopolitical debate into a serious diplomatic flashpoint, particularly because of the language used and the implications it carries for international law and alliance politics.
