President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially appointed Advocate Andy Mothibi as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), succeeding Advocate Shamila Batohi, who retired in January 2026 after serving in the position since 2018. Batohi’s tenure was marked by a determined effort to restore the credibility and independence of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).  Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is in conversation with CSAC Executive Director, Lawson Naidoo.

 South Africa faces no immediate or credible threat of an external military attack, but its ability to respond to such a threat has been severely weakened by decades of underfunding, declining readiness and the erosion of key defence capabilities. The renewed controversy over the United States and Greenland has unfolded against a backdrop of intensifying global competition in the Arctic, growing strain within Western alliances, and long-standing questions about sovereignty and self-determination. Donald Trump’s repeated suggestions that the United States should annex or otherwise take control of Greenland have moved the issue from a theoretical geopolitical debate into a serious diplomatic flashpoint, particularly because of the language used and the implications it carries for international law and alliance politics.  Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is in conversation with Professor Emeritus of International Law  , Prof Andre Thomashausen.
