Ms Mkhabela, a development institution builder, is currently the Executive Director of Barloworld Empowerment Foundation (BWEF), a non- profit organisation that seeks to ignite individual self-belief and unleash resilient and thriving communities through the application of innovative measures through advocacy and story-telling.

About 24 million people in Africa have diabetes, set to at least double in the next 20years – but only about 15 of what the world pays towards diabetes care is spent in Africa. In South Africa, insulin pens are running low and, Novo Nordisk earlier this year decided to stop supplying the health department due to “capacity limitations”. Lerato Mbele spoke to Imraan Bismilla, Division Head: Pharma at the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology and Khadija Jamaloodien, Chief Director for Affordable Medicines at the National Health Department.
