SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT PRIORITIZE BUILDING PROPER HOUSES OVER INTRODUCING TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS LIKE WI-FI STREETLIGHTS IN GAUTENG’S INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS

View descriptionShare

Informal settlements in Gauteng continue to face serious challenges such as overcrowding, poor sanitation, lack of proper housing, and limited access to basic services. Despite these ongoing issues, the government has introduced new initiatives aimed at improving living conditions in these areas. One such initiative is the installation of smart streetlights that provide lighting as well as free Wi-Fi access for residents. While these innovations can improve safety and digital connectivity, many people question whether such developments truly address the deeper problems faced by informal settlement communities. This raises an important debate about whether technological solutions are sufficient, or whether the government should prioritize building proper houses and improving basic infrastructure for residents.
