Zimbabwe’s political future is once again under the spotlight, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa pushing for further changes to the country’s electoral laws.
This comes just months after constitutional amendments extended the presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, effectively moving Zimbabwe’s next election to 2030. The changes also mean that the president will be elected by Parliament rather than directly by voters.
Now, Mnangagwa wants further amendments to the Electoral Act and the Constitutional Court Act, as well as a new law governing the Delimitation Commission.
What do these latest proposed changes mean for Zimbabwe’s democracy? And when electoral rules are repeatedly changed by those already in power, who ultimately gets to decide the country’s political future - the people, or Parliament? We are in conversation with Zimbabwean based lawyer and Journalist, Takudzwa Hillary Chiwanza.
