Johannesburg is South Africa’s economic heartbeat, but for many residents, it has also become a symbol of collapsing infrastructure, failing service delivery and deep political frustration. From power outages and water shortages to crumbling roads, crime and governance instability, the City of Johannesburg continues to battle multiple crises at once. And while the position of mayor may appear to be a poisoned chalice, constantly changing hands amid coalition tensions and political infighting, it also remains one of the most influential and contested positions in local politics.
